I'm afraid to run it.
Also action center is showing avast isn't turned on. Have rebooted 3 times.(http://)
Avast is running in the system tray.
-
Did you update your latest Avast version through GUI, or did you do a complete clean install through custom settings to make sure you didn't install Grime Fighter.
-
According to those screenshots you have 2 antiviruses registered.
You need to remove MSE.

In windows 8 or 8.1 you can only disable Defender ( MSE ) you can't un-install the program. :)

Strange :o I thought when you update the latest Avast version through GUI it will automatically install Grime Fighter without knowing, and someone please confirmed this issue because I did a clean install and I didn't choose Grime Fighter when I've update my Avast version through customs settings.

It's not installed on my system and I updated. Did not uncheck Grimefighter

Sorry but if you look at the small window closely it clearly lists windows defender AND MSE as being installed antispyware applications.
-
I know what it shows but I don't have it installed.
-
Should I repair Avast?
-
Should I repair Avast?
Do what Bob said in reply #5 first, and than do an Avast repair and you should be okay.
-
Have you ever had MSE installed.
-
@Arnold72
Several years ago I did.
-
Hi midnight.
I think you have remnants of MSE still installed on your system so this may be hampering your running of avast.
I dont know if microsoft has a removal tool for MSE,but if it has then it may be worth your while downloading and running it.
Maybe resetting the action center might be helpful too.
Sorry im not much help as ive never used MSE.
Hope your problem gets resolved.
Happy xmas.
-
I done a repair and now action center is showing......see attachment.
anything about my anti-virus program on Windows 8.1. I can't find any information about anywhere. It shows the firewall and Windows updates but nothing about any anti-virus program.
-
Hi midnight.
If you enter the services console have you disabled the windows defender service.?
According to your screenshot you still have 2 antiviruses running.
Disabling the defender service altogether might help you.
-
Windows Defender in Windows 7 is antispyware and it is working fine with Avast although it is useless.
-
See Attachment
-
Spot on -mightnight you're latest attachment is correct ;) now that you have Avast working correctly just do another repair to make sure everything is okay and that it
-
do you have Mcafee installed also.?
I noticed the tray icon.
That attachement is not entirely correct. It shows and states clearly that you have 2 real time anti-spyware programs running. One of these needs either removing or disabling.
It shows windows defender as turned off.
MSE turned off.
-
She only has McAfee SiteAdvisor
-
Excuse my ignorance here please but does windows 8 come pre-installed with MSE.?
I was under the impression that windows 8 came with a re-branded MSE called windows defender.
Midnights screenshot clearly shows MSE and windows defender as being installed and turned off.
Like i said before i believe the remnants of an earlier MSE installation could be still lingering on the system.

The Windows 8 computer I'm getting will have McAfee pre-installed.
I've never had MSE installed on this Windows 7 computer.

This a link for the removal tool for Mcafee products.
I find it strange that the action center is reporting that MSE is installed but currently turned off.
Only thing i can think that has happened is that at some point you have maybe had no av protection on your computer and windows has issued a windows update with MSE and you may have inadvertently installed it at some point.
Thats just a wild guess though.
-
I bought this computer sometime in mid 2012 and I didn't install MSE but I had my neighbor come here and transfer all of my files and programs from another Windows 7 computer to this one so maybe that's why it's showing MSE.
-
maybe that's why it's showing MSE.
If you want to find out, give Essexboy a OTL log to look at
-
If this is windows 8 then it automatically disables defender when it detects another AV. You cannot uninstall it

As far as MSE and WD goes all they need to do is disable them and they won't interfere with avast.
But that is not the OP's issue. It's getting her the action center to show avast is running.
My suggestion is one or more reboots might be needed.
-
Why is Avast still showing this? I don't have Grime Fighter, or whatever it's called, installed on my computer.
How can it find evidence of Grime?

In all honesty, I and probably others can't really answer this question as we don't know where you are at regards avast version number you have and how you got there.
Updating from the avastUI may retain the information that you previously had GrimeFighter (in early avast 9.0 betas) or if you didn't do a custom install and specifically unchecked the GrimeFighter option.
-
Go to Control Panel/Uninstall a program/Avast/Uninstall-Change.Choose Change and uncheck Grime Fighter.
I did this after updating Avast from GUI although I didn't see that Grime Fighter was installed.
-
Avast updated itself to Version 9.2011 so I didn't see anything to tick or untick. I'm using the free Version and I thought Grime Fighter came with a paid Version.
@abruptum,
I've already done this 3 times and I saw nothing about Grime Fighter.
@abruptum
I done exactly what you told me to do and it showed nothing about Grime Fighter. Did not show anything to tick or untick. Rebooted and nothing changed.
-

It will most likely be a separate paid product. :)
-
I don't understand why it shows "We've found evidence of Grime on your PC".
http://www.avast.com/grimefighter-intro
Grime Fighter is kind of greyed out but when I click on it the screenshot is what it shows. ???
-
Well honestly I just dropped Iolo's System Mechanic because my subscription to it was about to expire, interestingly enough I found that my computer worked even better without it being installed.
So im honestly wondering how effective this is at improving performance when I noticed more improvement by uninstalling System Mechanic and using a 3rd party defragger and ccleaner to clean up junk.

That is weird.Did you see option to choose which components to install like Web Shield,Browser Protection etc. ?
One of the component is Grime Fighter.

No, I didn't see any options to choose anything.

Maybe this will help you:

Thanks.....no more Grime Fighter. :)
The time prior to this change did not show anything to tick/not tick.
Merry Christmas.
