What exact version of avast do you have?
Do you or did you have other security software installed?

Sounds a bit like the High DPC issue I'm having with the AIS firewall. Since Chrome (and opera) do a sort of pre-caching (https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/1385029?hl=en-GB) (for faster browsing to sites linked on the page you're at) they open a lot of simultaneous connections. I believe it's this caching that causes the firewall to choke somehow, causing system stuttering (sound first, and mouse in extreme cases). Firefox does not precache on default, only when the site explicitly uses prefetch-link tags. This might explain the difference.
You could try disabling or removing the Avast! firewall and reverting to the Windows default one to see if that fixes anything. Turning off precaching would be another option to try.
