Well, it does not seem to be the out-of-box Microsoft Java VM at least (Technically, there is only Sun java but I think this makes the story rather longish).  So, I guess you have Sun Java 2 Standard Edition somehow.  Considering that you enjoy "net entertainment" often, I think the update is necessity.  Please do as the Italian says.

You can always go to http://www.java.com and get the latest version by clicking on the button

(http://www.java.com/en/img/download/button_javasoft_download.gif) (http://jdl.sun.com/webapps/getjava/BrowserRedirect?locale=en&host=www.java.com)

On a slightly different note, does anyone know if http://joeq.sourceforge.net is in anyway similar to Sun's JAVA VM and can I use joeq instead of the Sun offerring?

Kamulko,

You have an old version of Java installed (1.5.0_2) which has a security vulnerability. You need to download the latest version (1.5.0_3) here:

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp

See my posting here:

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=9671.msg121050#msg121050

Suszannah,

j2re1.4.2.03 has a BIG security hole and you need to update NOW.

http://www.pcflank.com/news251104.htm

Download the latest version from the link above and install.

Due to a problem with previous versions of Java, you must go to Start>
control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and uninstall any older versions of Java. IF YOU DON'T DO THIS, MALWARE WILL STILL BE ABLE TO RUN UNDER THE OLDER VERSIONS AND YOU WILL STILL BE VULNERABLE TO ATTACK!

Regards,

FF

:o I think…that version is only available in English at the moment.  :(

O.K. Frank, I have a question this time around, then.  Do I need to uninstall Microsoft JVM as well?

I have already done my homework and I know how to uninstall it.

1.Start>Run>cmd

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall

Say yes to the question and restart the computer.

2.Delete the Folder and Files below

WINDOWS\java
WINDOWS\inf\java.pnf
WINDOWS\system32\jview.exe
WINDOWS\system32\wjview.exe

3.Start Regedit and Delete the keys below.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_VM

My question is, do we need to do this?

Hi Umath,

There is an automated tool to remove all traces of MS JVM, available from the link below.

To test if you have JVM, go to Start>Run>Cmd and type jview.

(If it says not recognised, then you haven't.)

If you have it, the important thing is to make sure that it is build 3810, because previous versions have major security holes.

As to whether to remove it completely... On the one hand, if you have any applications on your computer that depend on JVM, they might stop working. On the other hand, JVM is only being supported up to 2007, so after that time any security problems won't be fixed and having it around will be a liability.

The choice is yours...

http://www.mvps.org/marksxp/WindowsXP/java.php

Oh, and by the way, watch out for JVM coming back to your system if you install older programs because they might require JVM and install an older, insecure version, putting your security at risk!

This happened to Johnny223 recently:

Thank you for the quick reply, Frank.  I've got the info above from this site (http://www.windowsitpro.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=38206&DisplayTab=Article) but your links are more informative.

Now that I uninstalled the old JVMs thanx to your help, I'd wait for the latest version of Sun JVM suites my OS' language.  I use many English apps including Avast! (different from Kamulko! ;)) but JVM is way too integrated to the system.

Kamulko!

I think 1.5.0_02 must be the latest version in your language as Umath mentioned because there is definitely a 1.5.0_03 version of JRE available, in English at least.

Hi, Frank! Happy to find you again  :)

Maybe you are right but I tested it on the English site, as you can see  ??? . If I open my console, I can also choose the interface language of the panel... is a mistery... 8)

ADDED: please, can you check if your java is the beta version? The official current version is installed by default when you check for updates.

Hi Kamulko!

Seems to be a full version:

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp

Java JRE is notorious for not recognising that an update is available: maybe that's the source of the mystery!

Maybe we have the same version but the last 2 numbers after the "_" are the symbols of the different locations...  :P...  I say this because at this moment I checked the java package on my laptop (OS in en/us language). I surrender!  ;D
Title: Re: java
Post by: FreewheelinFrank on June 16, 2005, 02:34:43 PM
That number's definitely the update number. Have you tried downloading the latest version and installing it over the old one?

Download the full package as the online install will perhaps not recognise that you need to update at all.

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp

This is what I normally do to force JRE to update.

Don't forget to check for the old version in Add/Remove because if it isn't removed it will still be a security vulnerability.

Hi Kamulko,

I have the same version as FreewheelinFrank, Version 1.5.0 (build 1.5.0_03-b07).   I've also heard the update checking from within Sun Java isn't always completely reliable, so I watch for updates and do it manually.

Maybe I'm going to more trouble than is necessary, but I also uninstall the old java, reboot, and then install the new.

Me, too.  Finally, I've got a multi-language version, which shows the version as 1.5.0 (build 1.5.0_03-b07) in my OS' language.

I have read and read all of the above.  I wish I had been here when it was being hashed out.......but...
I am pretty sure I don't have the latest version.  Just intuition + things just happen to me.
I went to the download page FF referred to, but I saw several places of things to download and I didn't see the version # that he mentioned.

Could someone please point out not only what but where I should be clicking to get the lastest version.

Plus do I understand before installing the new one that I should uninstall the old one through the install/uninstall page?
Thanks

I've updated to the new 1.5.2 -b09 version, (apparently the latest one I can get when I run the update) but what's the scoop on removing older versions?
I remember reading somewhere (I think it may have been on Java's website) that you should keep the old versions unless you're low on disk space because they might contain pieces that the new version will draw on to use.  Others say it's best to remove the old versions (Freewheelin Frank in an earlier post said they might even be a security issue).
I still have 1.4.2-03 and 1.4.2-06 showing up in my program files and in my Add/Remove.  Is it best to get rid of them?
Title: Re: java
Post by: FreewheelinFrank on June 22, 2005, 10:01:28 AM
It's essential!

The older versions have security holes and leave you computer open to attack, even if you have the latest version installed, because the writer of a Java applet (program) can specify which version to use to run the program.

For example, the writer writes a line of code which says:

"Use version 1.4.2 if present on computer"

The applet will then ignore 1.5.x and use 1.4.2 to infect your machine.

No new version of Java depends on an older version, so you can safely remove them.
Title: Re: java
Post by: emma on June 22, 2005, 03:08:53 PM
I downloaded the new version as per instructions sent to me by Susz (from FF)
I installed.
In the Intall/Uninstall section I noticed I had 3 different Javas.  I successfully deleted 2 of them.  When I tried to delete the 3rd, I got the below message.
I tried to look for it but just found all sorts of Java stuff.  (The download for the l.4 is sitting in a folder on my desktop from previous times)

Help in deleted the old java is appreciated.

Post by: FreewheelinFrank on June 22, 2005, 04:06:07 PM
Hi Emma,

You probably have a version conflict. Try uninstalling the latest version of Java, and see if you can then uninstall the earlier version. Normally it is possible to remove the earlier version after installing the new one, but it seems there is a problem with Windows Installer Service jamming up when multiple versions of a program are installed.

http://www.tech-recipes.com/windows_tips450.html

I found a 'Windows Installer CleanUp Utility' on the MS web site, so if the advice above doesn't work, we can try that and it should fix it.

I downloaded the MS uninstaller but have done nothing with it.(expect put it in a corner of the desktop where I won't lose it)

Hi Emma,

Did you get the MS program from here?

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301

I just downloaded and installed it on my computer. No problem. You have to go to Start>All Programs because it doesn't put an icon on the desktop.

Upon opening the program (Windows Install Claen Up) you get a very simple program interface listing  the programs in Add/Remove.

Find the Java line and right click on it. (It should be highlighted in blue.)

The remove button should become active at the bottom of the screen.

Click on the remove button.

Exit the program. (You can uninstall it from Add/Remove)

Check in add/Remove that all installations of Java have gone and reinstall the latest version.

With any luck this should fix it!

Hi everyone
I have been following your discussion on java.
When it comes to computers i suffer from being brain dead.
Anyway i am downloading the lastest version (hopefully) .
When i install this can i remove versions jre 1.5.1 update and jre 1.5.2 update. from my add remove program.

Do i install the new version before i uninstall the older versions.

I wan't do nothing to i here back from you kind people
Please don't laugh at me too  hard :-[

cheers
Late wire i decided to install the download But the version is (1.5.0 Build 1.5.0_o4_bo5)
As you can see not version   (1.5.0_03-b07) is this a problem.
Do i still need to uninstall update versions 1 and 2.

Hello again

one more question concerning build 1.5.0_04-b05
does this contain updates 1 2  3 updates, for java
Title: Re: java
Post by: neal62 on June 25, 2005, 06:47:04 AM
I believe this last version of Java your talking about is for computers with the 64 bit processor technology. If your pc is a 32 bit type processor you wouldn't want to download the 1.5.0_04 b05. I may be wrong but I would be careful before downloading that one. I un-installed my 2 older versions of Java before downloading the 32 bit version which I believe is the 1.5.0_03 version. This I understand is the safest way to try and make the change of Java versions from Sun. Upon looking at the #4 update again it may be that the version for a Windows platform is NOT for the 64 bit systems but is instead for a Windows 32 bit system, it's really confusing. Just be careful before downloading. Also I don't know if this latest build contains the updates for 1,2, and 3.
Title: Re: java
Post by: FreewheelinFrank on June 25, 2005, 09:33:30 AM
Hello folks,

JRE 5 Update 4 supports 64-bit Windows but does not require it: it also works on 32-bit Windows.

Updates are cumulative: if you get the latest one, it includes all the old ones.

These updates consist of a lot of bug fixes, occasionally including some which affect security.

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/ReleaseNotes.html

It's ok to install the new version over the old.

The old version will remain in Add/Remove Programs. It's important to remove the old version if is one that has a security vulnerability because the writer of a Java applet can specify which version of Java to use if there are more than one on a computer. Even if you have the latest version, malicious Java code can still run if you have not unistalled the old version.

All older versions can safely be removed after installing a new version. I think they just hang around so that anybody who writes Java code can test their code on the different versions to see how they run.

I have JRE 5 update 4 alone on Win-32 and it works just fine.

Of course, all of this is meant to be an automatic process:

http://www.java.com/en/download/help/5000020700.xml

I wish somebody would explain to me why Java automatic updates doesn't work? ???
