Title: How to disable popups?
Post by: Noob2342 on February 02, 2014, 02:08:21 AM
I've used avast! free for a few years and have always really liked it. This year, I decided to buy a license, but I am finding the new version of avast! incredibly frustrating. One of things that is driving me absolutely nuts is all of the f***ing popups! There are popups for everything from updates, to advertisements, to "informational" messages, to security reports, etc.

I tried entering "0" in for the popup durations, but that seems to have the opposite affect of making the durations infinite.

If there isn't a way to disable all of these stupid, f***ing popups, I am uninstalling avast! and moving on to something else. I used to love avast!, but it has become incredibly bloated and it seems like I'm always being bombarded by advertisements from it these days.

That is because 0 is unlimited duration and you have to close it, 1 second is the lowest valid setting.

I haven't a clue what these 'bleeping' popups are other than the swearing there isn't a great deal of information.

Some settings that might help reduce the number of popups is to uncheck the AvastUI > Settings Appearance - scroll down to Community Features and uncheck the two options.

Really? You have no idea what popups I'm talking about? How about these, off the top of my head:

Popups after avast! updates
Popups when I connect to an unsecured network with some stupid message about the NSA spying on me (it an ad for avast!'s VPN service)
Avast! software update popups (for other software on my computer, not for avast)
Upgrade popups (even though I paid for avast!) and "special offer" popups
Security report popups
Other "informational" popups that I can't remember right now

That's just what I can remember off the top of me head. I do not want to get a dozen popups a day from my antivirus.

The reason I asked is because there are different areas from which they could originate and I don't get them in anything close the the frequency you are stating. I don't even know what avast version you are using, possibly AIS giving you said you have paid and the unsecured network notification.

Have you implemented the suggestion I made.

If this is the 30 day Security report when you get it, I believe it can be disabled, I don't see these either.

Hi, just a suggestion that you might try. Put Avast! in silent/gaming mode, this should suppress most popups and messages.
Hope this helps.  :)

I would, except that from what I've read that also disables alerts and warnings (i.e. the only things that a user should ever be bothered with, as it's actually important.

I am in disbelief that avast! let's you set the duration for info and update popups, but that you can't disable them completely. It's ridiculous.

Yesterday and today I've been getting popups asking me to rate Avast! on Amazon.

I am so sick and tired of these popups. Why isn't there a way to turn them off?

This sounds more a community styled pop-up - did you not disable this as I suggested on Reply #1 ?

I'm seriously regretting paying for avast.

AdBlock has nothing to do with avast pop-ups.
These are probably related to the (wrongly worded) vps updates.
Follow my instructions in reply #7 and see what happens.

Unchecking the community features does not prevent the pop-ups in question.  They are not "wrongly worded vps updates" since I get the normal vps update pop-up when the update is downloaded.

You may be getting the proper pop-up, but the OP might not be getting the right one.

But your suggestion to "disable the community features" does not solve the OP's problem.  I HAVE disabled the community features and STILL get the advertisement pop-ups along with the normal vps pop-ups.  If disabling the community features did disable the advertisement pop-ups, then I shouldn't be getting any advertisements - I should only be seeing the vps pop-ups.

I can confirm the same thing.  I've had community features disabled thru several versions of Avast.  With the past few updates, the only way to rid myself of the Avast popup ads is to disable VPS notification popups.  This shouldn't be happening.

Seriously, Avast! developers, this is ridiculous.. I paid for this software and I shouldn't be getting popups several times a day trying to get me to "upgrade" or buy additional services. I used to recommend Avast! to people. Now I don't.
Title: Re: How to disable popups?

I have been a paying customer of Avast since version 4, and up to now have been extremely satisfied with Avast until this current version 9.
I have always appreciated the popup that informed me that my virus database had been updated, but I certainly do not appreciate the "Buy Now" / "Find Out More" popups for additional Avast software that I have been getting recently.
I  chose to renew the Internet Security version for 3 PC's for 2 years  because it suits my needs, so I do NOT need daily popup adverts from Avast for features I had decided NOT to buy eg. Avast Premiere, Secureline VPN, Easy Pass, Avast Backup etc. One of the items on the Avast 9 user interface is "Store" where all the available upgrades and products are listed, so the "Buy Now" / "Find Out More" popups are unnecessary.

If this aggressive selling on the part of Avast does not stop soon, I will not be renewing my licences when they run out in 6 months time. Reading through this thread it seems there are others who this also upsets, so it would be a shame if the Avast team lost customers due to this.

One solution to the problem may removing version 9 and re-installing version 8 if it can be obtained somewhere. The update to version 9 kept crashing my wifes PC (Vista) and we had to revert to Avast 8 for it to run, and it seems that she gets none of these unwanted pop-ups.

Avast! became malware itself.

From Wikipedia: "The term adware is frequently used to describe a form of malware (malicious software), usually that which presents unwanted advertisements to the user of a computer. The advertisements produced by adware are sometimes in the form of a pop-up."

See? Perfect description of Avast!.
Sigh, one of the main objectives of anti-virus is to keep us safe from adware malware.

No Avast!, NSA doesn't give a damn about me, I don't want your VPN.
Stop the pop-ups that say my browser is not rendering pages correctly as an ad for Google Chrome, it's irritating! I don't have any problems.

I've already installed Avira in another computer to test it.

1) To be malware the ad must be malicious. The pop-ups are not malicious. They are advertizing.
2) Good luck with using an inferior product.
3) I don't like the pop-up advertizing either. Please feel free to contact avast using this form (http://www.avast.com/contact-form.php).

My browser is working fine and NSA is not interested on me. The unwanted pop-ups suggesting I have problems just so I buy something or give them revenue via a partner seems pretty malicious to me.

2) Good luck with using an inferior product.
According to AV-Comparatives Avira isn't inferior. Correct me if I'm wrong...

3) I don't like the pop-up advertizing either. Please feel free to contact avast using this form (http://www.avast.com/contact-form.php).
Hahaha, perfect, I'll report avast itself as undetected malware.

Ok we disable this checkbox now. But what if a new version update removes it or switch the control of ad pop-ups to another specific checkbox or introduce new kinds of pop-up ads that must be disabled manually?

I don't want my friends to deal with that. There's less and less point to recommend avast to anyone.

The trust I once had is lost now. :(

When Chrome started being offered by Avast it was perfect, it was neutral (neither opt-in nor opt-out - two unchecked option boxes). Now Chrome is opt-out in the installation and some users are seeing Dropbox in the beta, ok I can still deal with that and at least it's not the kind of crap other software installers are used to offer. Fine, do money!

A pop-up suggestion to upgrade to the premium version is fine. An ad suggesting me my network or browser is faulty when it isn't, no sorry I won't accept that.

Have they removed  30 day security report option from the latest stable version?

I honestly don't know if it has (not seen in the 9.0.2013 UI) or if this is a default action, which can be disabled in the 30 report screen once displayed.

I too didn't find it in the GUI in the latest version. Guess they removed it. Hope by default they dont show it & if they show it, provide the option to disable it like it was in one of the previous version.

A pop-up suggestion to upgrade to the premium version is fine. An ad suggesting me my network or browser is faulty when it isn't, no sorry I won't accept that.

A friend had this pop up recently ' this WIFI is unsecure', Dont let the NSA see , 'Make me invisible'

After reading on here I can see that it is primarily an advert but the unsecure part worried me because as far as I knew her network is secure and nothing has been changed in the last year.  Oddly enough I think these popups roughly started after she re-registered Avast.

Is her network unsecure or not ? - It is a Virgin superhub which I'm not familiar with but I checked and it has WPA2 and a key. Not sure what else to check.

Tried turning wireless off but had to switch it back on as scanner was using it.

NO, her network is NOT insecure. The wording Avast uses in that popup is a scare tactic to try to get you to buy their VPN service. This kind of behavior is what I would expect from malware, not from my paid antivirus.

I want the pop ups telling me Avast has been updated, it reminds me it is working properly.  The only pop up I get and can't stop  is the one that cost me money and annoys me is the "I have 13 grimes items on my pc".   When I click on it wants me to upgrade.  I can't seem to stop that one.

Thanks for telling about setting the time to zero, I had done that.   Now it is set at 1.

I've been using this wifi for a year or so,this just recently started . I know the GOOD folks that provide it and did so to help my family out though these hard time's <+10000, I know that someone good at coding hacking can will mess with who ever they can,I would like to be able to disable this feature,

No Control Panel is part of Windows, so it has nothing to do with avast.

I have no idea what avast version you are using, though reading between the lines, I would suspect you are using the avast free version ?

If you are then this "warning about UNSECURED network" pop-up is somewhat confusing, I thought this 'warning about UNSECURED network' pop-up was only displayed when using the avast Internet Security or avast Premier versions that have the avast firewall module.

So I think that your issue is different to this topic that you have jumped into and that control panel and GrimeFighter have nothing in common to your issue.

I would suggest that you create your own new topic Here (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2.0), click the New Topic button and we will try to help.

It's been a while since I've ranted in here, but the popups have NOT gone away. I'm very disappointed in the Avast! developers for having these advertising popups all the time. I didn't pay money for Avast! ISS to be annoyed with popups for other Avast! products all day long. Here's a new one as of today:

An antivirus is supposed to run silently in the background and only notify users when there's a problem. In the past I have always loved Avast! (after disabling notifications and sounds) and so I purchased the software for my computers this year, but I will not be buying Avast! again in the future. I will move on to a different product.

I haven't seen an unexpected pop-up from Avast (free) in a long while.  Not one.

Does the paid version not respect the same settings as the free version?  I can't imagine that to be true, but stranger things have happened.

For those of you who haven't managed to find all the settings to quiet Avast down yet:  Keep at it.  It's doable.

...these stupid, f***ing popups...
It's been my experience that when asking for help, it's better to be humble and polite.  Don't forget why you're asking (i.e., because you actually DON'T know everything).

While everyone understands occasional frustration, stomping into a room and shouting off obscenities just identifies you as someone no one would want to help or even be around.  It doesn't make you seem smarter or more knowledgeable.  It doesn't mask or distract from your ignorance - quite the opposite.

Yes, there is a way to make Avast absolutely silent, keep out of the way, and not present you with a bunch of extra "Tools" you don't need.   It's the way it works for me, and I might even have been tempted to show you how, annotated with diagrams, if you'd been nice about asking.  But that actually takes a bit of work, and as a fellow user why would I want to do that for someone who's just polluted the forum with nasty remarks?

Please think about this and next time you need to interact with others you consider avoiding yelling obscenities that you've gone to extra effort to push through the obscenity blocks.

Next version of avast! paid products will allow to disable other products offers for the ones who wants that.

I just need to vent my continued frustration at continuing to receive a tremendous amount of unwanted popup ads from Avast. Here's one I've been seeing on my personal secured WiFi network:

It's unbelievable to me that a program I paid money for continues to bombard me with advertisements. As soon as my licenses to Avast expire, I am switching to AVG.
Since you are using a paid version you can install the new beta which allows you to disable the ad's :)

Sounds promising, but when I click the link the forum says I don't have permission to view the forum?

...these stupid, f***ing popups...

All good points, Noel. However, as a customer, I am really pissed that a paid product is constantly bombarding me with ads. Avast has lost me and many of my family members and friends as customers (current & future) due to their scum-bag ads and scare tactics (yes, I just said that, and I stand by it. For an antivirus company to have popups "warning" that people can snoop on your traffic, etc., in order to try to get them to buy their additional products is incredibly dishonorable and tacky IMO).

I completely agree with Noob and the other posters here.  I have used and recommended Avast for years.  Now I only suggest it with caution because I have grown to hate it and all the annoying popups.

We shouldn't have to dig through 10 different settings screens for buried/obscure options to turn all the annoying crap off (and then modify the installed feature to turn off others).  We shouldn't have Dropbox or Chrome or any other 3rd party software automatically selected at install time.  We shouldn't be having scare tactics and lies used against us in an attempt to get us to buy upgrades.  This is what potentially unwanted software (adware/malware) does, and if Avasts developers continue on their current path, that is exactly what Avast will become - unwanted software.

Stop pushing away avid users and evangelists of your product, keep it unobtrusive and effective and people will use it, recommend it, and even buy it.

Next time I get frustrated with Avast I will be trialing some other AV options to see if they are any better (only reason I haven't done it yet is because I'm too lazy).  I expect they will not be any different in most regards, but I will give some a try anyway as I am sick of Avast acting like the very malware I am trying to defend against.

Just in addition to this, I'm finding that I'm getting the "Make me invisible" popups only when I go to certain adult sites. It appears Avast! is using the URL's I visit to try and sell me a VPN service. It creeps me out to know that my antivirus is monitoring the URL's I visit, and possibly reporting those URL's back to some server somewhere so the application can try and upsell me on a  VPN service.

I think it's time to drop Avast as my recommended AV solution.

avast! does not alert you based on the sites you visit. It's a generic offer for avast! Free AntivĂrus. Otherwise, if avast! is alerting you about an infection, take care about the sites.

Avast doesn't monitor your URL's. It does however know when you're using public WiFi and that's
most likely what triggered the notice to use their VPN service. (it happens to be an excellent product.)

The irony and hypocrisy is that Avast users now receive more annoying advertising popups directly from Avast than they ever likely did from malware.

You're totally mistaken on that fact. I very seldom see them. I haven't even bothered to disable them in the
computer on which I use a paid version.

Your experience may be different than mine, but that does not mean I am "totally mistaken".

This thread has more people viewing it than any recent thread.  That speaks volumes.

If there isn't a way to disable all of these stupid, f***ing popups...

Maybe there is a way how to filter the Avast ads out ... ?

What if I switch to the Silent Mode, and I manage the pop-ups I really need (warning, alert pop-ups) to be displayed by other means?
(I guess Avast updates the logs even in the Silent Mode, and so a custom script could check the logs and pop-up important alerts in place of Avast?)

Did anyone try it?

That would probably violate the terms of the ULA. :)

Do you think the ULA prevents to read/process the Avast logs?  ???

No you can read what ever you want. It's making changes that might be a problem.

I didn't want to make any changes to the Avast code.

My idea was a separate program / scheduled script.
The program/script would inform me about Avast alerts, but unlike an Avast pop-up it would not be able to deliver my response to Avast: In order to take any action I would have to do it manually via Avast UI.
