Ok I got a notice that my Avast! Free had a program update available. I opened it, clicked on the "Update" box/button (because I have it set to notify me if an update is available, not to automatically do so), and nothing happens. I even tried right clicking on the toolbar icon and choosing "update". Nothing.
Current definition version: 140221-0
Current program version: 2014.9.0.2008
I did get a notice that my registration was about to expire, so I took care of that. Not sure why it won't let me update the program version.

You haven't updated for quite a while by the looks of it, not to worry you can always download the new version from here http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=145192.0 and install straight over the top
