Title: Avast Free 2014 Won't Protect
Post by: twotix on February 22, 2014, 06:55:26 PM
Running Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit SP1...
Replaced fan in dead laptop then Trend Micro IS wouldn't start. Uninstalled it but Trend Clean Boot remained. Installed Avast Free 2014. When I click on icon, the tutorial screen says. "You Are Protected". When I click status, it says "You Are Not Protected-The Avast Service Is Off". Won't get first update.

Clicking on start on same screen gives error message:

"Service shutdown
A program is attempting to shut down avast system service, disabling the real time shields. This action will leave your system unprotected. Do you want to continue?..."

Ran a bunch of Malware detectors but nothing yet. Any ideas? Thx.

Did you use TrenMicro removal tool to clear any leftover files?

General: Uninstalling a third-party antivirus software  http://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB11#artTitle
Also here  http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/

When done, try avast repair
Controlpanel > ad/remove programs > avast > uninstall/change > repair option .....wait a minute and reboot

Any change?

First, be sure to get rid of all remnants of your prior installed AVs.
-> http://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB11

Then:
1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions..!!)
3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.
