When I click on the green avast! logo in Firefox and it pulls up the sidebar, the settings button on the bottom is not working, anyone have a clue why?
-
This should work: chrome://wrc/content/options.html
-
Hello,
I work with firefox 27 I have the same I can not set. Setting button does not work. In chrome that makes it.
Sincerely,
Sjaak Straver :

If you can't reach the settings on the bottom, reach them from the top:

You are totally missing the picture. I am not talking about Firefox settings, I am talk about avast! settings...

Thanks! This worked, the question now is, why does the plugin not work...
In fact the sidebar says this website is unknown...
Figured that part out, it is because Amazon Instant Video is running as I typed this.

My mistake and I can confirm that the settings button does nothing.

It is the Option site for avast! Online Security. Just copy/paste the address then go. It should open the AOS option site. see image ( it is in Spanish because I am in SA )

IE - The webpage cannot be displayed.
Chrome - This webpage is not available
Firefox - blank page.
-
I do not think it works with IE. Besides, AOS option button works even with IE 8.
I do not use Chrome so no comments.
It definitely works with FF 27.0.1 since the screenshots are mine. Here with different settings. see image
I just paste the address given by Asyn in my browser bar and enter it. That's it. No idea why it is not working for you though :-\
-
Didn't work for me.
-
Asyn's link works if used in Firefox 27:

It does not work if pasted into another browser. :)

It worked this time but stayed open only long enough to see the setting's. I have it set to block everything.
-
Bottom line. AOS is more trouble than it's worth.
-
@Paul_D,
I have to disagree with you.

Not for me, it doesn't (in FF27)
It's obviously hit or miss, so not a solution for everyone.
I got it to work once in Chrome, but no longer.
-
@Paul_D,
I have to disagree with you.
Disagree all you like.
Web Of Trust (WOT) does everything AOS does, does it better, has a much larger user base (so many more ratings) and doesn't cause the heartburn AOS is clearly causing so many people.
I'm sick of pussyfooting around this. I didn't want to post an alternative in an avast! forum, but this is ridiculous.
I actually ran the two in parallel at one stage, and WOT red or yellow flagged many more sites than AOS.

Since the ratings are totally user based, that doesn't necessarily mean those ratings are totally correct.
I use it strictly for the added phishing protection since I have almost everything else unchecked.

Agreed. But statistically the broader the data collection the more accurate the data.

So you can still get at the settings button? That makes you one of the lucky ones.

Bottom line. AOS is more trouble than it's worth.
I finally agreed.
I have been using AdBlock Plus (years, using both "EasyList" and "Malware Domains" filter subscriptions) and Web Of Trust (about a year), and in Firefox security settings (Tools -> Options -> "Security" tab) I have Firefox block reported web forgeries and block reported attack sites.
While Web Of Trust is based on voting by other users and that skews results for political, religious and controversial sites, it does tend to be fairly accurate for technical sites.
When something is blocked by AdBlock Plus, I can see what rules were applied to the current page, add an exception rule, or quickly tell AdBlock Plus to not process the current page or the current site.
On the other hand, AOS has been awkward. I have had to disable various features to see certain content (e.g., weather.com videos, some of which are preceded by an unskippable short commercial, and there was another site that doesn't come to mind that wouldn't load videos until I turned off some options in AOS). Also, if one ventures into Google image search, the images load very slowly.
I finally disabled AOS.
Are there any protections offered by AOS that I am not already getting via the Avast!, Firefox security settings, and the Firefox add-ons (AdBlock Plus & Web Of Trust)?
-
Mark. Without having delved too deeply into AOS, I think WOT and AdBlock Plus cover it pretty well. I also use Ghostery.
The other thing to consider is cookie settings. I allow first party and block third party.

I get to the settings button by following Asyn's instructions as clearly shown in the screenshot:)

Unfortunately, I'm stuck with having to allow third-party cookies because of the way my former employer has implemented the way I pay my medical premiums and the handoff my credit union uses to allow me to pay my credit union credit card online.

And I and many others don't, as has been clearly set out in this thread.

Not if they come from users. Fact is that over 99% of pc users have almost no clue on how to use a pc properly. And even more don't have any clue at all when it comes to security.

And of course you're in the other 1%!

IMHO the AOS add-on is, as previously stated, virtually useless and has been nothing less than a pita from its inception.
I figured out the best thing to do is either disable it or not even install the blasted thing.
I have found the resident shields, a solid firewall, and PrivDog give me plenty of protection.
I also use Adblock Plus and Bitdefender Traffic Light. As for WOT it's basically based on
opinions and popularity and does not offer any "real" protection.
Don't get me wrong, I like the fact that avast provides superior protection.
That's all I ask of avast...is protection.

After 33 years using computers...
I never had any malware on any of the ones I had.
I never had a problem that I couldn't solve myself.
There was never a problem on someone else system that I haven't been able to solve.
-

It actually has not since many of them aren't trying that link in the proper browser. :)

Haven't tried this yet but out of interest is it just a back way into the settings page - the same page that the settings button will take you to if it worked? Bit confused why it's got "chrome". Anything to do with Google Chrome or just coincidence?

Which is?
As I have already posted, I have followed the instructions in IE, Firefox and Chrome with equal lack of success in each.
When the link was posted there was no indication that it was browser-specific.
Besides, what use is a link that doesn't work in any browser? Sort of defeats the point of links, doesn't it.

Nothing to do with Google or Chrome. Just paste it into the Firefox.
If you post this into chrome, it does nothing except get the the search results.

Do you actually still have AOS still installed ???

Installed, but disabled.
OK, I have now enabled it and I have the settings pop-up from the AOS icon.
But the settings button there still doesn't work. I now appreciate that this is a long-winded workaround, but it really shouldn't be necessary.
This problem seems to have existed for going on two weeks now.

Yes.
Thanks guys. The settings page is displayed.
The reason why I need to get to it is to disable Safe Price but unfortunately, as soon as I clear my temporary internet files and cookies (via ccleaner), the settings are reset. I'll post this as a separate issue as Asyn's has answered how to get to the settings page.

You're welcome.

Just a suggestion.
I'd be surprised if it's anything to do with TIF.
