Cloud backup good or bad idea?

https://blog.avast.com/2014/12/03/is-backing-up-your-data-the-same-as-exposing-it-in-this-case-yes/

I will never backup anything to the internet - I simply don't trust anyone with my data other than me. Anything that I put in the likes of dropbox, transitional, images, etc. etc. and certainly nothing confidential.

Postcard hoax still around!

https://blog.avast.com/2014/12/30/worst-virus-ever-hoax/

What the blog doesn't say - don't send this email to all of your friends as it says - this is possibly the most harmful part of this hoax. Just imaging if you send t to say 30 people and they send it to 30 people. It doesn't take a maths genius to see that this will swamp email servers - not to mention you are likely to get some back from friends of friends in the same social circle.

NEVER ever forward, copy and email any unsolicited email that you receive.

Support and updates for versions 8 and lower will end May 31st, 2015.

About time they cut support for older versions, like those using a different VPS update system. What I find strange in the version release history, versions 8.0.1497 (compatible with Win 8 & Win 8.1) isn't the last avast 8 build that is 8.0.1506, but that is a build to support upgrade the avast 2014 a.k.a avast 9.0. https://www.avast.com/en-gb/release-history (https://www.avast.com/en-gb/release-history)

I just think cutting off avast 8 is a bit too much too soon, given the longevity of avast 4.8 and that avast 9, avast 10 (a.k.a. avast 2014 and 2015) were both release in 2014. I just wonder if avast have the stats for how many users those still getting auto VPS updates via avast 8.0 ?

Some of my major concerns in this is for those:
1. with older systems that may not have enough resources to be able to update.
2. if this will be a forced program update as we have seen in some versions in these forums.

@ mchain  Thanks for catching this one.

I agree with David too many different versions makes it difficult on servers with all of the vps updates.
v8.0 isn't that old but v7.0 and older are ancient technology.

I have actually had a clear out of all of the screenshots I have done for older versions, 4.x, 5.0, 6.0, 7.0 and 8.0. I did this quite some time ago, I must have had a premonition and saved quite a bit of disk space. I only have screenshots relating for avast 9 and 10.

YES!!! About time. Thanks Avast.

I have to disagree  what DavidR mentioned. This is the right time to cut off Avast 8 and below versions starting from avast 9 through to avast 4.8, including VPS updates.

As far as the major concerns go in this topic, users with older systems that have older versions of avast should upgrade/buy a decent computer of their choice so they can install the latest version of avast. They will definitely not like a forced upgrade on their older system, as users had reported issues/problems in this forum.

Colour me confused, is this a new product haven't heard of 'Avast Home Network Security' and is it OK for business use (the self-employed), as avast free isn't but avast business free is OK.

Para-Noid's blog link is just a different way of advertising a new feature for marketing purposes.

See <snip> attached below:

There one will see Avast Home Network Security is a standard part of Avast Free antivirus.  Actually a feature directly related to user security as well.

Yes and a very confused one, since this function is within avast Free, then advertising it for the self-employed is incorrect surely as it is being used for business purposes (not for home and non-commercial use).

Yes they could use the avast free business version, but then I don't know if that includes the Home Network Security function.

If you don't believe it ask Bob, me, or several others who tried and used Win10.
I, for one, knows avast works with Win10. At least it did in the virtual machines I set up.

I couldn't get it to work with the latest release of Windows 10 b 10130

No problem with the free version. It's worked like a charm for quite a while already.
Update:
A clean install of Avast IS fixed the problem. :)

Well, the "Viewpoint" articles are from guest-bloggers, so it's not from Avast.

Surely these guest blogger scripts are reviewed for content and correctness.  After all we wouldn't want to be associated with disinformation (excuse the terrible pun) causing harm.

On the causing harm theme, if that harm is not computer security related then this is straying into the political arena.  What is that great maxim for forum topics no politics or religion, etc. etc. as there will never be general consensus.
