Title: can't start resident protection
Post by: pedr on July 08, 2005, 08:59:20 PM
I am running  avast on xp professional.  The initial problem was that I could not start the resident protection automatically on start up.  I uninstalled deleted directory and cleared temp files.  The present situation is that none OT the tasks will start.  I get  no message when trying to start resident protection but when I try more details and start each individual task the message 'requested resident task was not found' appears.  Can someone help?

Do you use any other antivirus in your computer?

RPC error is generally related to other antivirus present or, at least, firewall blocking.
RPC error may also be because of avast! services being stopped.
Anyway, RPC error is most likely correct by this procedure:
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair). You must be connected to the internet while repairing.

If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

I have tried both of these but to no avail.  I still have the same problem.

What if you start the main avast interface (and maybe start an on-demand scan)?
Do you get any error messages?

Thanks

That is quite possible as even when uninstalled a lot of stuff gets left behind (registry entries, etc).

Check out these links for the relevant version, it may help to remove the remains.
