Title: Is Avast not compatible with my Bit Torrent client?
Post by: fearandloath on April 15, 2014, 03:53:49 PM
Starting about two weeks ago weeks ago Whenever I started my Bit Torrent program Windows would crash. I have even rebooted my computer and tried two other Bit Torrent programs all with the same results. I have read that Avast could be doing this but could not find a solution. It only does this when using the program. I have Windows Vista 32 bit and used uTorrent for a long time. I have since tried Vuze and BitTorrent all with the same results. Can somebody please help!

I'm using avast pro 2014.9.0.2017 and uTorrent 3.4.1 build 30740 and do not having a single problem.
But I only use it to download Opera and other legitimate things.

Have you already run a full system scan with avast and MalwareBytes?
If not, I suggest you do so.

I don't know what the exact message is. I should have wrote it down. It's a blue screen and it recovers dumped files. I then have to restart the computer and it's fine again until I try using the Torrent client again. When I rebooted the screen would just go black. I have the latest version of Avast Internet Security 140416-0 and I had updated to the latest version of uTorrent and also Vuze and Bit Torrent. I download only user created surround music files. Nothing illegal. I tried scanning the computer but got negative results.

Write down the error on the bsod and let us know it in your next post.
Also attach the latest created dumpfile to it.

I rebooted the computer a second time and installed uTorrent. Scanned for viruses and malware with no results. It ran fine for three days while running uTorrent off and on. This morning Windows crashed again. I ran the virus scans again and no results. Here is the error message on the blue screen:
IRQL GT ZERO AT SYSTEM SERVICE.
With the following sequence:
***Stop:0x0000004A(0x8219007f, 0x00000002,0x00000000,0x00000000).
Again I don't know if this is a problem with Avast but I have read several articles that says it may be the case. I have ran these two programs together for a long time and never had a problem. If anybody has a solution please help.

Could you upload it to a file sharing site for me to collect and look at.  Just the last two or three will do

Can you recommend one. The one I use will not allow me to share that file. It says I don't have permission. Or perhaps e-mail.

Alright this is getting frustrating. Now it won't allow me to attach the file because it says I don't have permission from the administrator. I am the only user and administrator on this computer. I don't know how to give it permission.

Sorry for being a pain here but the forum won't let me access your profile.

You need 20 posts to do so.

Thank you Asyn I was unaware of that. One frustration solved. Now if I could get these dump files attached to an e-mail I would be even happier.

The minidumps indicate one of your system drivers.  So I would go to the manufacturers website for you computer and see if there are any updated chipset drivers

Went to the manufacturers site and updated every driver they offered. I am still having the same problem. >:(

Unfortunately the minidumps do not specify which driver is at fault, they use the generic ntoskernel  failure

Temporarily uninstall Avast and see if the problem continues

I uninstalled Avast on Friday afternoon and ran my Bit Torrent client off and on all weekend up to as much as 18 hours at a time and not one problem. With Avast it would shut down within minutes usually. I guess the posts I read were true. Any suggestions what I can do.

That wold appear to suggest that it may be a webshield problem so I am not to sure where to go from here

Can I turn webshield off without affecting the rest of Avast? And do you think that will solve the problem?

In my opinion webshield is the most important part as it is your first line of defence, it may be worth experimenting with setting like deepscreen/hardened mode to see if they have an affect

I have looked around on Avast and I have no idea where these settings are. I have used both programs in tandem for several years on this computer and never had an issue. Is there something new on Avast that would have started this issue? I really like Avast but if I have to give up one for the other it will have to go since it seems to effect all torrent programs. I know from other forums that I am not the only one with this issue. Unfortunately a real solution has yet to be found.

Just wanted to thank everybody who helped me out with my problem. Especially Essexboy who was always very prompt and accurate with a response. And also very patient when I wasn't quite sure what he was talking about. It may not have exclusively solved the problem but now I know what the problem is and can work around it and that eliminates a major source of my headache. I raise a toast and thanks. Cheers!
