Title: Avast Free and iTunes
Post by: Marlon_NFFC on April 16, 2014, 04:22:43 PM
I have recently purchased a new Win 8 laptop.

I took AVG off and installed Avast then installed iTunes.

When I tried to connect to iTunes store it won't unless I disable all shields.

Any ideas ?

Do you have the Browser Protection enabled ( AOS ) ? if so try disabling that and turn the shields back on.

I disabled both add ons in IE and Chrome, restarted iTunes and it still won't access unless I disabled the shields first.

How did you uninstall AVG ?  Did you use the removal tool

Un-installed using Revo, then used the tool after I had googled some solutions.

What error do you get, as iTunes connects for me with no problem

I don't use iTunes, so I can't speak from experience; but I believe iTunes acts like a browser and as such mat be intercepted by the web shield streaming filter (proxy).

Depending on the errors you are getting (as essexboy asked), that may well help to determine where any conflict might lie.

There should be no need to disable all shields (as that leaves you completely unprotected), you could first try disabling the web shield and see if that is where the problem lies ?

If that resolves then it is possible to exclude iTunes from being intercepted by the web shield - avastUI > Settings > Active Protection > Web Shield - Sprocket icon (settings) > now check the 'Scan traffic from well-known browser processes only' option.

I am not getting an error message.

When I click on iTunes Store, it comes up with the message in the box at the top Accessing iTunes Store and the horizontal line with the progress bar just showing a zebra like constant line moving from left to right and never actually accesses the store.

If I disable the shields, it connects straight away and takes me to the store.

Yes that will do, however, it won't be identifying the shield in conflict (most likely the web shield) and it leaves you completely unprotected.

Try the options suggested in my Reply #6 above.

I checked that box you suggested but it made no difference.

Have you also disabled the Avast Online Security (AOS) add-on in your browser, though (not using iTunes) I'm not sure if that could also interact.

Yes mate, tried that 1st.

It is annoying, but workable. I just disable for 10 mins whilst I use iTunes then start it up again.

Surely though it can't just be me having the problem.

I can't answer that, not having iTunes to confirm one way or another. That said essexboy who has iTunes doesn't have this issue, but I don't know what his avast or iTunes settings might be.
