Title: Install hangs near completion; System crippled
Post by: tthomas on April 24, 2014, 04:11:16 AM
Howdy, so I work in the IT department at my university so I get a lot of students asking for antivirus recommendations. As a long-time lover of Avast, I always recommend it.

Here's the problem, for many of the students the install hangs very close to completion (at least 75-80% down the progress bar). It does not advance any further, and clicking anything yields the spinny wheel. Usually holding the power button to force shutdown is required, because ctrl + alt + delete and ctrl + shift + esc doesn't work for summoning the task manager. Post-reboot, it will allow for login; however, hovering over the task bar yields the spinny wheel, and I am unable to right click the desktop, or any shortcut icons on the desktop. The problem occurs exactly the same for every student I can think of that has tried to install Avast. I've had to do system restores to return these student's OSes back to a usable state every time.

Every student must purchase a specific laptop from the school (Lenovo W520s and W530s), which is slapped with an Enterprise copy of Windows 7 or 8 image, customized for those models. I have been unable to replicate the issue on my own W530 (Windows 7) for some reason (free install worked, currently running Internet Security).

My question is, is there any way to prevent this from happening?

Have all other Antivirus products been removed using the company uninstall tool ?

I will test this out on a few of the loaner laptops my university has. I'll respond back with the results.
