Have been using AVAST Premier Free ver for ~10 days running Windows 8. Then avast failed to load and when I attempt to start via icon shows ..
HTMLayout.dll cannot be loaded to properly start GUI. Therefore process cannot continue.
I have run MS Safety Scanner with nothing found.
Ad-Aware Virus full scan - nothing found.
LavaSoft Reg Cleaner - shows one Uninstall entry (tried to uninstall AVAST several times - will not uninstall - gives same message (HTMLayout.dll cannot be loaded to properly start GUI. Therefore process cannot continue. ))
Have followed the following directions from previous avast forum post...
Step 1: Browse to the c:\Program Files\Avast Software\Avast\Setup
Step 2: Copy the HTMLayout.dll
Step 3: Browse to the c:\Windows\System
Step 4: Paste the HTMLayout.dll into this directory.

with no positive results - also tried copying HTMLayout.dll (as found in Windows Program file (Avast program) and pasting to System, System32 and SysWOW64 folders) with no results noted.
Windows Updated (set to automatic update) installed several updates in the past week including one to 8.1 - also includes MS Office 2013 update and IE 11 for 64 bit system.
Computer is MSI GT70

Try a repair of avast and let us know if that solved it.

Programs and Features will not allow a repair. When I click on repair/uninstall the same error message pops up. (HTMLayout.dll etc etc)

The uninstall went perfectly with both programs used as you directed. The ck of the Device manager shows nothing more of the Avast program. I downloaded another copy of the avast premier...and when I attempt to (re)install I still get the same error message.
Making progress but still not quite there....

Run the following commands to verify there is no system component store corruption (from an elevated command prompt):
sfc /scannow
if errors or corruption are reported by sfc /scannow, run this subsequent command to attempt a fix:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

GT70? Which one? The one I checked had unique BIOS updates for Win 7 and Win 8. All the latest 8.1 drivers installed? This is not an Avast issue IMHO. I assume you are trying to download and install the latest Avast version?

I downloaded and installed a copy of avast premier on the laptop the day I bought it and all worked fine for ~30 days. At some point around 4 days ago avast premier "quit" running and I could neither start, repair or delete it. Based on info I received in this thread I have now successful deleted the program but still am unable to get either the internet or standalone avast premier download to install.
I have followed all suggestions I have received here as closely as my abilities allow.....
Still the same ..... HTMLayout.dll cannot be loaded...... error message.

Did you use the removal tool as advised ??? Did you reboot your system prior to
attempting to install avast! Premier again ???
Do you have a license to register avast! Premier ???

I have used the removal tool several times along with a reboot after use. Have now also downloaded yet another virus program (360 Safe Global) which found 2 trogan.Generic and 2 HEUR/malware - all in the NetCache. These were quarantined with no apparent effect on the problem.
I have also now ran a Registry Cleaner (RegServe) several times. It does show a recurring File/Path References result which shows to be fixed but reoccurs every time I run the cleaner.
Lavasoft Registry Tuner shows an Application Paths problem and an Uninstall Entries problem - which also show to be fixed when I run the program, but return as before, each time I run the program...

found 2 trogan.Generic and 2 HEUR/malware
Hmmmmm............I'd run MalwareBytes v2 Scanner and see what it finds.
The scanner & removal is free: https://www.malwarebytes.org/premium/ ....only costs $$ to have the active protection....which works well with avast.

Sorry but one click fixes very often cause more harm than good.
If you run them on a regular basis, this may very well be the reason for your current problem.
If you're using Windows 8, you can always do a non destructive repair.
You'll at least keep all of your personal information.

I have never done anything but run avast prior to having this problem..... I have run avast on a number of my previous laptops - probably my last 8 or 10 - and have only had a single problem with install which the avast help line took care of.
Within the last week, to replace the Free avast versions, I have loaded avast premier on 2 computers and bought a 3 computer license.When I attempted to get help this time with my current problem(s) - on both mine and my wife's laptop which I finally got installed with the help of a friend - I was ( quite rudely) told that I could either purchase a 179.00 "help package/program" or format my computer.
I very much like avast and hope to resolve this without having to format my new laptop or spend 179.00 on what appears (to me) to be a problem that the "company" could/would assist me with.
The kind and knowledgeable people on this forum are my "last resort" prior to either taking the laptop to a real pro or just getting pissed and moving on the something else... :)
However, I am still optimistic.....

This should have been included in your first post. What OS was it running when you bought it? Did you upgrade to 8.1 afterwards. Again, have you updated all drivers to 8.1?

At this point it looks like you'll need to purchase a license if you intend to continue to use avast! Premier.
Or, totally remove Premiere, reboot and then install the free version of avast!.

Love to do that Bob.... but. Even after all of the previous free avast version has been deleted when I try to install a new avast download (both stand alone and internet versions) the same error message appears stating..... HTMLayout.dll cannot be loaded.

Still have same problem with free... i uninstalled everything, now trying to install with installers and still same problem

Update windows with all released updates first.
Delete ALL (previousely) installed av's/malware scanners
Clean your system thorougly
Perform a real clean install of avast.
The real problem is something you have currently on your system.

I have been using avast for years, I recommend it to most of my friends and even put it on my parents computer. I recently purchased a new laptop with Windows 8.1, deleted the default Norton crap that comes on computers and installed Avast Pro, with license, so its a paid version of the software. Was running great.... then....
After Windows 8.1 did a "features" update, I had already turned off the windows update due to this being my 3rd attempt at getting avast to run on this machine without the htmllayout.dll error. Yes, I reset the computer back to factory specs each time. This is a brand new system out of the box so I had nothing to loose.
This is not an Avast issue, this is a windows issue somewhere. I have been monitoring my computer closely after my 3rd reset to factory, and the avast was working perfect until yesterday I turned off the computer and it did a features update, when I turned it back on, I got the error, after checking the log files, the only thing that happened was 'some' features were updated but I can not see which ones.
Running malware, repair tools, scannow and just about any other fix has failed for me. Only way I have been able to fix it was a factory reset. I will be doing it again today, installing Avast Pro again, and then creating a restore point to see if there is a short cut to the fix other than a complete reset. I will update the post when I complete this task today.

I have exactly the same problem, interestingly mine is a brand new MSI GS70 Stealth Pro laptop running Windows 8.1 fully patched.
Installed Avast (great product I have used for many many years) as soon as I fired up the laptop for the first time and everything was great.
Then about a week ago Avast fails on start-up with the error "HTMLayout.dll cannot be loaded to properly start GUI. Therefore process cannot continue."
Very little installed on this laptop and the ONLY thing that has changed in the last few weeks has been windows patches. Tried the things mentioned on this forum and still get the error. Very frustrating.
Will be watching to see if anyone discovers the cause...

Ok, refreshed computer to factory specs, reinstalled all my games and such, working fine. Turned off auto Windows updates. Today, get the "Features update" now getting the same error. So I have narrowed it down to a Windows feature update issue. Luckily I created a restore point. Going to go back to the restore point and see if I get the same error.

- open a command prompt
- navigate to the folder where regsvr32.exe is located. (depends on the os, c:\windows\system32 or something alike)
- type: regsvr32.exe c:\<path to htmllayout.dll>\HTMLayout.dll
Make sure the path as well as HTMLayout.dll is typed correctly (capital/lowercase letters)
- reboot

Regsvr32.exe is installed in the System folder.
On a 64-bit version of a Windows operating system, there are two versions of the Regsv32.exe file:
- The 64-bit version is %systemroot%\System32\regsvr32.exe.
Path: C:\Windows\System32\regsvr32.exe
- The 32-bit version is %systemroot%\SysWoW64\regsvr32.exe.
Path: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\regsvr32.exe
...........so to add is this correct ?
- open a command prompt
- navigate to the folder where regsvr32.exe is located {see notes above}
- type: regsvr32.exe c:\Program Files\Avast Software\Avast\Setup\htmlayout.dll

Then again the location is not always the same. It can work in:
C:\Windows\system
C:\Windows\system32
C:\Windows\SysWOW64
Now, I must say that in my XP system I only have file HTMLayout.dll in 2 locations:
C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast
C:\program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\setup
It is not in system or system32 folder and yet my avast! works flawlessly.

Is it wrong to ask for someone to post the htmlayout.dll on a thread post here ?
There are references to downloading it on some of the links but those sites are pegged as malicious by MalwareBytes.
I'd like to see a trusted senior member attach the file from their Avast directory.

Exactly the same file Bob. Good to know there is no difference between XP and Win 8, well at least in 32 bit.
