Wow my first scan took 8 hours!  What do I really need to scan so I can scan more often but not necessarily spend that much time?  Also when it pops up a window saying it's found something what am I supposed to do with that info?  Does it automatically remove it or something?

Diane, you don't need to scan nothing manually if you keep avast! ON all the time.
If you let the default settings, avast! will send infected files to Chest and prevent infected sites to load.
Send to Chest is always safer as you can restore a file (in case of wrong detection or false positive).
