Title: PUP included in Avast Software Update!!!
Post by: Figgs on May 15, 2014, 05:18:52 AM

Let me say up front that I have used Avast for a long time and this is the first time this has ever happened!!!

I updated two Adobe items (Air and Reader) late today and was offered a game by Kabam called Dragons Lair I think, and I debated about downloading it b/c I don't do that sort of thing, but this was recommended by you, OK?

After messing with it for a bit, I didn't want it and got rid of it........HOWEVER, when I looked on the lower left toolbar, there was a blue orb there and it had downloaded SILENTLY with this game!!!  It was of Pokka and I had never heard of it, so read up a bit and promptly removed it.

Ran MBAM and I had FOUR PUP's on my machine......Open.Candy.......which I got once before from a sneaky program downloading with a kosher one.  The MBAM techs helped me get rid of this.

I have PUPs checked off in my settings and I am quite angry that a) you let this piece of malware download via your antivirus program...and b) that you didn't catch it.  Bad enough you are always pushing Chrome.....stop adding programs to your downloads!!!!!!!

If this acts up again like the last time, I will head for MBAM where they know what a PUP is........and if this is Adobe's fault, then I leave it up to you to contact them.  I shouldn't have to clean it up for you!!

P.O'd in Canada........and also wanting you to know about the malware that is slipping right THROUGH your antivirus.

If you turn on PUP detection in avast it will detect.

Note that "PUP" means potentially unwanted program.

Also note that avast may recommend you to update certain programs if using Software Updater but avast does not recommend or install any game's ( Dragons Lair ), Adobe must have bundled the game into it's installer so Adobe installed it and not avast, you need to take up your plight with Adobe but in future turning on avast PUPs in scanning and Web Shield will/should prevent this from happening again.

Thank you for replying........but please go back and read the following......*paragraph 5*...

***I have PUPs checked off in my settings and I am quite angry that a) you let this piece of malware download via your antivirus program...and b) that you didn't catch it.****

I have been around the antivirus/antimalware world for more years than I care to count and am well aware what a PUP is.  Used to volunteer on the MS news groups.

I realized that it was either YOU or ADOBE.....but with the anti-PUP checked off, Avast should have caught it.  Maybe you better take a look at your PUP detection.  I know from a couple of folks at MBAM just how prevalent they are....and also that antivirus companies in general were ignoring them for quite some time.

I will write to Adobe and let them know how I feel about the bundling!!  But you were remiss with the PUP detection, ergo I am correcting you.

I have PUPs checked off in my settings
For the reason you stated there is why I said to enable PUP's " checked off " means not enabled where I come from.

No point in pointing the blame either by responding to myself as "YOU" me ( you ) is just another user and doesn't work for avast ;)

PUP - Possible Unwanted Programs.
This also requires action on your part. There will be differences in deciding what's considered Unwanted.
This could all have been avoided by you simply not allowing this to be installed in the first place.
Use custom install and be more proactive in deciding what to allow and what not to accept.

How many times do I have to say that the PUP box WAS TICKED OFF, checkmarked, whatever.
And now I am getting ticked off.......in future I will deal with MBAM for malware.  At least they can understand Canadian English!!  You two are not good reps for Avast with your constant trying to make me out to be in the wrong.  I wasn't.......Avast should have caught it.  The PUP I got was over a year old and Avast didn't get it last August when it silently downloaded with a photo editing program either.

Goodbye......In future I will deal with people who don't try to twist it around to be MY fault.  Not impressed at all with your attitude, Bob......saw other posts where you were not nice to other posters either.

No AV can or will detect everything 100% of the time, as Bob mentioned being more vigilant during installing programs probably would have alerted you to a PUP being bundled, if you got the PUP via an adobe update the other day and also received one via your photo editing program then you aren't reading through the installers properly ( don't just click, read first ) an AV can only do so much to protect you - the rest is up to user caution and vigilance.

I don't expect to get PUPs or viruses via Avast or via Adobe.......there was no special handling required.  And for your information, I know a lot more about the above than you two do, it seems.  I have NEVER had a problem with Avast in years other than the PUP last August and you two know darn well that the antivirus companies did not consider them bad enough to include in their detection.  I am quoting an anti-malware expert, btw.

I will use the MBAM forum in future.  Or one of the antivirus gurus I know from years of being on the antivirus news groups.  I was merely alerting you to a problem I thought I had with Avast.....but you say it was Adobe.  OK, I will now deal with Adobe.  Companies that bundle other programs with a download are ones that I will avoid in future, like you constantly trying to throw Chrome at your customers.

If you know so much more than us why did you get a PUP ??? Reading the avast installer will reveal that Chrome can also be un-checked ;) nothing is forced on anyone.

You haven't mentioned what version of avast you are using or what section of avast you have turned on PUP's in as all these factors are relevant, avast does detect Open Candy so I suspect you have your configurations incorrect.

The malware techs here could have removed any problems for you if you had asked since you think it was an avast problem...

Good Lord......you certainly want to have the last word, don't you!!  I always uncheck Chrome when presented, I usually do custom installs of everything, I have the latest version of Avast, I am not going to hunt and copy over all the places PUP is ticked off, which frankly should be a default action.........and I will deal with MBAM in future.  Goodbye. ::)

@Figgs,
You also forget that one securities programs interpretation of PUP may be my favorite utility.
Many times it depends oh how that so called PUP is used and what installed it on your system.
A keylogger is a PUP if installed by a third party without your consent.
A keylogger installed by me on my computer to track my Grandchildrens activity is a tool for me and certainly not a PUP.
We are here to help so please don't bite our head off. :)

I do apologize for biting your head off, as you say, but I have been ill for a few days with a virus and did not like the cavalier attitude of Craig.  He obviously had NOT read what I said and gave me a patronizing pep talk about what a PUP is and how I should never do what I did and so on.  Being a once fiery redhead (gray now), I reacted strongly to being treated like a newbie.  Those who know me personally would not be surprised by my reaction.   :)

I checked my settings on Avast and they were fine.  One assumes that an antivirus program is "ready-to-go" when it is downloaded.  A few minor tweaks by me like unchecking outgoing mail, etc....making sure everything is set to a normal range and so on.  I also have my own "security tweaks" and always have used them.  Minor stuff, but not about to lose passwords or 15 yrs. of genealogy research!!  :(

I am presently running a quick scan and if anything is amiss, I will let you know.  I rely more on MBAM and a couple of small freebie programs like Ccleaner, knowing that Avast is running in the background.  And I do recommend it to friends on genealogy forums for instance, where I am asked quite often what antivirus program I use and recommend.

OK, scan is done and I am 100% clean and I made sure that every darn place the word PUP showed up was check-marked.  My settings are the same as your screen grab.  So I have gone thru Avast and made sure everything was kosher and am satisfied with how I have it set up.

Btw........you have one year more than we do (53 yrs for us next month)......we is getting old!!   :D

For your information I was not being cavalier or patronizing you, the only reason I responded in the first place is because you stated "I have PUPs checked off in my settings" this means to anyone here who speaks normal English that PUP's was unchecked ::) further followed up by your own rude responses when I was only trying to help, you dug yourself into an even deeper hole with your pompous attitude and trying to blame avast for your own failings in being un-observent when installing software so you got the grumps on because you stuffed up but couldn't admit it and had to blame someone ::)

Done with you on this topic :-X

Sure am glad I didn't bother to apologize to you!!!  Your rudeness and arrogance are over the top.

Bob......what was that you said about you guys were here to HELP???  Somebody forgot to give him the memo.

Finished with him as well........ :'(

Well, in Canada where we speak the Queen's English, it simply means I have put a check mark in the box.....ergo it is checked off on the bucket list.

Why are we arguing about this?  I suppose it could be taken your way, but I meant it was activated.  Nuff said.  I have turned off the notifications cuz I am tired of this foolishness........
