Title: R4 Software Updater
Post by: REDACTED on June 18, 2014, 12:29:52 PM
Since the change to Software Updater which resulted in some errors in updating, I haven't installed it. However, for this beta, I did, much to my chagrin... Software Updater informed me that both my 32 bit and 64 bit Java installs were in need of updating. Great start, until I clicked on the Update button for the 64 bit Java, and ended up unable to read anything. Rather than sending me to an English site, I ended up at a German site. Changed the de in the URL to en and I was okay. Finished that, and clicked on the Update button for my 32 bit install.... and ended up once again at that same German site for the 64 bit Java.

So, to sum it up, Software Updater as it sits is more trouble than it is worth, and is currently uninstalled until it becomes less troublesome again.

One other thing... after updating the Java and Shockwave Player, Software Updater continued to insist that all 3 items needed updating. I refreshed Updater multiple times to no avail.

Hi Gregg,
was it Java 6 or 7 ?
Because the Java 7 should be now semi-automatic.
Thx

Martin....

In both cases, Java 7, updated to 7.0.600.19, and I have nothing "semi-automatic". I do not use the default Java update settings, but have it set to notify me. I do not let ANYTHING automatically install on my system, if I can possibly do so.

That's a good safety measure Gregg...no automatic updates, but to notify you instead.  But are you uninstalling the older version of Java with the Java uninstaller prior to installing the new version first?  This is recommended by Adobe.

If this were "recommended", it would be an option in the Java installer, marked as the recommended course of action. And no, I have never uninstalled a previous version of Java before installing the new version AND have never had a problem with Java sending me to a foreign site for an update. Indeed, when using Java's own updater to update, since the Avast! Software Updater sent me to that German site, everything went as normal and expected, i.e. I was sent to the English Java site for updates to both 32 and 64 bit versions. It was only the Avast! Software Updater that did this, and only this time, in spite of my always installing updates without uninstalling previous versions. They are, after all, technically an "update".
