Title: removed my google chrome -
Post by: REDACTED on July 02, 2014, 07:51:11 PM
yesterday i found my internet connection very slow, i did a virus scan with microsoft tool and t found several malware and trojans which it removed but said it was only partieally able to remove 2 . so today i installed avast and did a full scan. it found 2 issues which i did an automatic fix on, it then asked me to a reboot scan which i did. half way through i had a power cut. when power resumed PC did a system restore to before ful lscan so i did this again. Same 2 issues found and removed. This time it did not ask for a reboot scan. Problem is that afterwards i no longer had access to internet with my browser, google chrome. I can still get emails, use ipad with same router etc. I have checked all connections, rebooted etc but no luck gaining interent access with google chrome. So.. i have manually done another system restore to before time of scan and browser works again. although still slow. I really dont understand why this is but really want the software to remove the threats. i dont have any other browsers installed. any ideas please?

What did Avast remove ?  As some of these adwares add a proxy to the internet connection

Download OTL (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe)  to your Desktop

OK change of tack as it is still not taking...  It is a problem with the forum software not you

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-recovery-scan-tool/) and save it to your Desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

OK next we will empty the temp folders and then if you run a disc defrag that should speed you up a bit

Clear Cache/Temp Files
Download TFC by OldTimer (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/TFC.exe) to your desktop

thank you i haven't run a defrag for ages so I'll let it run overnight. So assuming I'm then up to speed... no need to run another full scan with avast? ok to continue to use avast? no nasty bits still on my PC?

Nope. looks nice and clean

Subject to no further problems   :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset  System Restore points:

Download and run Delfix (http://general-changelog-team.fr/fr/downloads/finish/20-outils-de-xplode/9-delfix)

: Keep Java Updated :

WARNING: Java is the #1 exploited program at this time. The Department of Homeland Security recommends that computer users disable Java
See this article (http://www.forbes.com/sites/eliseackerman/2013/01/11/us-department-of-homeland-security-calls-on-computer-users-to-disable-java/) and this article (http://www.nbcnews.com/technology/technolog/us-warns-java-software-security-concerns-escalate-1B7938755).
I would recommend that you completely uninstall Java unless you need it to run an important software.
In that instance I would recommend that you disable Java in your browsers until you need it for that software and then enable it. (See How to diasble Java in your web browser (http://www.geekstogo.com/2600/how-to-disable-java-in-your-web-browser/) and How to unplug Java from the browser (http://krebsonsecurity.com/how-to-unplug-java-from-the-browser/))

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

CryptoPrevent (http://www.foolishit.com/vb6-projects/cryptoprevent/) install this programme to lock down and prevent crypto ransome ware

Malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php).

Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

Just a bit of an update. System no longer slow, had some minor problems with google, bookmarks cleared on another PC users profile, and a pop up about preferences not being kept, but all in all feeling safer. Thanks again for your time and help.
