Title: Avast web shield and Netflix
Post by: REDACTED on July 12, 2014, 05:50:44 PM
Hi, I am using w8.1 will all the latest updates.
When I use Netflix via thw w8 app Netflix does not work once it tries to start streaming. I can get to see all the VID icons etc.
I found some entrie for this issue and added this to webshield.ini

[General]
UseStreamFilter=0

This has not fixed the issue (I did reboot etc).
Any idea had to enable the video stream to get it to work.
BTW turning off webshield fixes the issue.

I also had an audio problem with my ASUS motherboard but that was fixed via the regentry below.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Audio]
"DisableProtectedAudioDG"=dword:00000001

Here is my total webshield content:
Any suggestions/help welcome.
Thanks
Frank

Exclude the application/address from being scanned.
Either just in the webshield or global.

I have already added www.netflix.com/* to the exclusion list via the avast setting (the entry is visible in my netshield.ini).

Exclude the application/address from being scanned.
Either just in the webshield or global.

Do you mean something different to what I've done ?
What do you mean by global exclusion?

I Have the URL in the exclusions.

webshield.ini
ExcludedURLsList=http://survey.researchnow.com*;http://netflix*;http://www.netflix.com*;http://netflix.com*;http://www.talkford.com*;http://www.dominos.co.uk/*;http://www.tvguide.co.uk*;*.cloudftont.net*;http://survey.researchnow.com*

Exclusions.ini
ExcludeUrls=""http://www.netflix.com*""

I suspect the video stream is via a different url

Is this entry in webshield meant to disable streams from being blocked??
[General]
UseStreamFilter=0

Thanks for the info, but in my case has not helped. Shall I take that entry out then ?

Is there anyone out there using AVAST successfully to stream video from Netflix in w8.1
I still have a problem.

Somebody must be successfully using AVAST! and Netflix, how is it done, do you have to open some ports for the video stream??
Putting the URL in the exclusions does not work.

Coming someone from Avast give me some hints!!

By the way BBC iPlayer also chokes when Avast! is running. I suspect all video streams are killed.

Anyone else struggling??

As soon as I disable Avast all works

I don't use Netflix  but have no problems with streaming.
Google cast also works without problems.
What other security programs are you running ???

nothing much as I have a fairly new install of w8.1
All I know is as soon as I enable Avast! the streaming stops.
Turn webshield off and no more problems.
So it does point to Avast! (My version is 2014.9.0.2021

I did the same test on a W7 system with Avast! version 2014.9.0.2013 and that works fine with Avast! webshield not turned off. So it is the new Avast! that is stopping the stream.

I have just added this to the mime exclusions
audio/*, image/gif, image/png, text/css, video/*
but it does not appear to work.

Does Avast block port numbers , if so how do you exclude the streaming ports

Any ideas welcome.

This sound more like a firewall problem.
Are you allowing the webshield access through your firewall ?

I'm using AIS and can stream Netflix movies.  I'm using Windows 7 and Firefox 31.  I've set no exclusions at all.  I know this doesn't help your situation, but it is possible.
Title: Re: Avast web shield and Netflix

I am confused now. The Windows firewall settings have not been changed from bog standard.
I do not have AIS so presume nothing is being blocked. Webshield is blocking this as if turned off all streaming work wheter it is in IE FF or Chrome or even via the W8 Metro app.
Turn Webshield on and all stall. At that point I am not touching any firewall settings.

Not convinced this is a firewall issue at all.

Any ideas?

You should be able to test if it's the firewall by leaving Webshield on and turning off the firewall.
If that works, you need to reset the permission in the firewall.

Has any third party firewalls been installed, then disabled or removed?  If so, there may be remnants interfering, as most don't remove themselves cleanly.

Not had any response from Avast! tecchies as yet. I have been using Avast for many years without any problems. Now on W8.1 and the new AVAST! and all my streaming does not work with webshield turned on.. Surely some kind of contact would not be too much too ask ?!? Even if it was to say "No there is no fix" get a different product.

The only other malware util I use is spybot and I have tried the same scenario with spybot disabled.

On windows 8.1 I have not used any other version of avast! but the latest. However on a w7 pc I have older version as mentioned earlier and on that Netflix and BBC iplayer work fine unlike on the w8.1 PC

My guess is that because the streams do not originate from a www.netflix.com or suchlike url but from IP addresses.
As those ip addresses are not embedded into trusted sources by avast database they get blocked. I can see in the realtime data windows a multitude of ip addresses are scanned and presumably blocked...netflix appears to use more than one stream maybe I need to learn all of those and exclude them!

You can see those IP addresses in the pictures I posted earlier.
I will exclude those IP addresses see if it helps.

I haven't used SpyBot S&D since version 1.6.2, and with resident modules disabled.  As that version was dated, I did try a more recent version on my WinXP machine and found it lacking.  It was uninstalled long ago.  There has been a recent release v2.4

Could you verify that none of the browsers that you have installed are set to use proxies?  A proxy could interfere with streaming and much more.

Hi, everything is bog standard as it came with w8.1

Question: how does the stream from an ip address eg http://185.2.223.158/* get thru on the old version of Avast?

Thanks, that eliminates a proxy as a problem.  You may have to look to your ISP as the issue.

If you kill Spybot, (Prevent it from starting at startup) is the problem still there ?
Title: Re: Avast web shield and Netflix
Post by: REDACTED on July 27, 2014, 10:23:35 AM
Hey guys, thanks for all your commenst and assistance.
I have tested with Spybot not loaded, same results.
As for the comments re my ISP, I fail to understand how that can be. You have a PC working and streaming, then you turn on webshield and it kills the stream, how can you even think about the ISP ?
Also we have several other devices on the same network W7 devices, tablets iphones etc, all work fine with netflix.

Conclusion that this is an AVAST! issue, another clue is when I put in the IP addresses that I can catch which Netflix is using (I have about 8 or so so far), the stream is staying on longer so it is those IP addresses which are being throttled. Surely there must be a way to detect a video stream in AVAST! and let it pass ....by the way I have same issues with iPlayer and other video streams. Maybe an AVAST technicians can explain how this works please.

Any other ideas welcome.

First, uninstall Spybot..!!

Then:
1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions..!!)
3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.

Before uninstalling SpyBot S&D, be sure to remove it's immunizations first.

Spybot has always had Tea Timer which prevented changes being made to your system.
It may not be a separate part of the product any more but, is still there.

No, it's not.  TeaTimer had nothing to do with the immunizations of SpyBot Search & Destroy.  The immunizations, once applied, are not an active running component.  TeaTimer was active part of SpyBot Search & Destroy thru version 1.6.2.  With version 2 and newer, TeaTimer no longer exists.

The Home version fxv300 has only has a SpyBot proxy resident, but he apparently has that disabled.  That leaves the immunizations which will remain when the program is removed unless the immunizations are removed first.

Once we finally get to the bottom of this blockage, we'll know what's causing it.
I highly doubt that it's avast! or I would have already been bombarded with
phone calls from my relatives who use both avast! an Netflix.
Title: Re: Avast web shield and Netflix

I highly doubt that Avast is the culprit, too.  I have no problem with Netflix streaming.  Avast Free and AIS both have the same antivirus components, so that rules out the antivirus as the problem.  That leaves some other issue than the Avast antivirus causing what seems to be Avast causing the problem.

Hi all, after messing around for so long I have gone another way just to prove a point.
I have removed Avast! and installed AVG.
I have not removed Spybot as I have been using that sw for many years and has spybot served me well.
Anyway with AVG I can stream Netflix, sky, iplayer etc so this has always been an Avast issue.

I shall stick with AVG for now until I get a sensible solution to this issue.
Don't get me wrong Avast has served me well but in this case the new version on w8.1 does not work for me.
What I find frustrating is the lack of support from avast themselves as if they could not care less.

Many Thanks anyway.
Frank
