Title: Which program causes the update of virus definitions
Post by: REDACTED on July 14, 2014, 09:41:16 PM
We have a 10 student computers that we installed Avast Free on and also Drive Vaccine from Horizon DataSys.  Vaccine restores the computer to a previous state upon reboot but will allow Windows updates and updates to Avast.  However, we must identify what the virus definition update program is for Avast so Vaccine will allow it.  Can anyone tell me the name of the Avast virus definition update program?

You are violating the rules for the free version:

Not completely sure what you are asking about... the program that downloads the definitions, or the program that uses them, or the location where they are stored, or...?

Eddy, thanks for that info.  I have applied and as a non-profit 403b educational institution we should be okay.  So thanks again for the referral.  We want to follow all copyright laws for sure.

Igor, what the Vaccine program is asking for is the exe file name that performs the update, I think.  Maybe you could tell me both names of the download program and the program that uses them and I will try each and see how the Vaccine program functions.  I wonder now, with the info Eddy gave me, if those program names will change.  I have applied for the Avast Education program and will know in two days.

Thanks to the both of you.  We operate on a shoestring.  Two half-time paid employees and about 20 volunteer tutors plus one stumbling IT guy.....me.

Can't you exclude a entire folder?
Something like c:\program files\avast\*.*

You could also try to exclude AvastEmUpdate.exe and instup.exe
Don't know if it will solve the probem, but worth trying in my opinion.

On a site note, you know that horizondatasys has Educational pricing?

Hey guys,

I'm Sam from Horizon DataSys. As Eddy mentioned, you can definitely set up an exclusion drive upon install, but it might not be the most efficient option in this case.

As long as you have the avast update executable in the "Other updates" field, you should be good to go!

Hope that solved the issue, and if you have any other problems go ahead and message me. Cheers! (P.S., you guys and gals at Avast are great! Pardon my intrusion!)

Humbly,
Sam
