Title: How to disable Avast for 1 hour or less
Post by: REDACTED on July 30, 2014, 11:36:55 PM
I use Avast Free version 8.0.1506. On searches I can't figure how to temporarily disable Avast. I am trying to install Adobe Flash player but it says I can't install Flash player till I temporarily disable Avast but can't find out how to do this. I don't have Avast icon on my task bar. I just have the shortcut icon on my desktop. I use Windows 7. Can someone please help?

1) Why are you running an outdated avast?
2) Where are you downloading Flash Player from?
3) Right click on the tray icon>disable shields.

It would be best to upgrade to v2014.9.0.2021  :)

(1) I havent been on Avast for quite a while and didn't update it. sometimes there is not  much difference from previous update.
(2) I downloaded Flash player from Adobe.com but it will not let me install it till I disable Avast.
3. I don't have an Avast icon in the system tray. I only have the Avast icon on the desktop and I can't find anywhere to disable shields in Avast.

Down by the clock .... system tray....there usually is a small arrow that many of the icons is hidden behind, if you click you get a dropp down menu

I didn't have Avast set to put an icon there so wasn't sure what Para-Noid meant. I usually just click on the desktop icon when using Avast. I now updated to 2014.9.0.2021, and in Control Panel I changed a setting in "Taskbar and Start menu" so the small icon will show up in the taskbar. I don't think "Shields Control" will show up without using the small Avast icon in the taskbar. BTW, in the latest update, it says "Shields are on" but in previous updates, didn't it allow you to choose which shields you wanted? Now it looks like you have to use all shields such as mail shield for example and none can be turned off. Is that correct? I liked the previous update better in a couple of ways. But now that I have the small icon when you right click on it, there are some choices to disable Avast which is what Para-Noid was referring to. Thanks for your info and to Para-Noid.

contolpanel > Ad / remove programs > avast > uninstall / Change > change ...... remove what you dont want

Not something everyone knows, but one can choose what gets installed and not.  In the future, choosing custom install will open a install window where you can choose (deselect) what you do not want.  If you want to go that route, we can explain how to do this.  Unfortunately, one cannot choose a normal or recommended install for anything anymore.  Use custom install for everything.  A program you're considering doesn't have it?  I'd toss it.

As Pondus says.   ;D

I found it. Thanks for the information. I wouldn't have known to go there to add or change or remove features in Avast and other programs if you didn't tell me. Thre are things I don't know about Win 7. I have it on my laptop but I usually use Win XP on my desktop which I've used since it first came out. I find Win XP much easier to figure out but my desktop much easier to figure out but I wanted to find out how win 7 works.I found theAdd/remove/change feature for "Shields". Seems a bit of a roundabout way to change or add features in Avast. Thanks.

I wouldn't have known. I'm behind the times still using windows XP which works on most sites I go on - for now- It's easier than win 7 - and windows 8 is a complete mystery to me.  I am working for the past weeks on windows 7 .

Always a bit of a learning curve for a new operating system.  It is no longer Add/Remove but Programs and Features in 7.

After you download the current version of Avast and do a CUSTOM install of it (only install the things you want), make sure you also download and install the Avast Uninstaller Tool to remove your older version and put the tool on your desktop so you can find it.

Uninstall Avast using the tool in Safe Mode as instructed, then reboot.

Install the new version of Avast, then reboot.  Make sure it is working properly, update the virus definitions, and register it.  You will get an email with a license.

You should not have to turn off Avast to install flash.  However you should remove all previous versions of flash prior to installing newer versions of flash.  First you need to download the newer versions of flash and save it somewhere you will remember.  You many need 2 different versions of flash if you use different browsers - one for IE and one for other browsers like Firefox and others.  Then download the flash uninstaller tool (from the adobe site) and save it to your desktop.

Uninstall Flash from the flash uninstaller tool, then reboot.

Install the new version(s) of flash either on/off-line (which ever one you selected), then reboot.

Confirm that you have the newest version of flash by going into Control Panel > flash to see what version you have and make sure it is the newest version(s).  Turn OFF automatic updates, but turn on remind me when updates are available > Apply > OK.

After making sure your other software are up to date, you may want to clean up your machine at this point to delete temp. Internet files and cookies so it runs faster.  And you may want to configure your settings in Avast to your liking.

Let us know if you have any questions.  :)

Thanks for your post. You gave me a lot of information which I will save for future. I know its off topic but I got the latest version of Fllash layer and it is rcognized by my system, but when I go on websites or Youtube, the ad before a video is normal and bright enough to see OK, but when the actual video comes on the screen, its almost black. can hardly see anything. the audio is ok, but not the picture. On a search I notice there are many complaints  about the same with latest version of Flash player which is 14.0.0.145. I never had problems with Flash before. An earlier version may work better. Also, when I was installing the latest version of Flash, it did ask me to disable AVast temporarily.

Did you get the download file for flash from the adobe site itself?

Did you select the online or off-line installation?  http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/ (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/) -- Make sure you unclick install the AV in the center box of this window or you will end up with 2 AV's on your system!!!

Did you install for IE and another browser or just IE?  (see above link for all browsers)

Had you uninstalled flash with their uninstaller tool http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html (http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html) prior to installing the newer version?  If not, I would suggest if you're still having problems to do as I suggested (download and install the flash uninstaller tool to your desktop).  Download but not install yet the new version(s) of flash using the online version.  Uninstall flash with their tool and reboot > go online > install the new version(s) of flash and click "ask" when a new version is available > reboot > verify that you have the newest version of flash.

See if this resolves your problem.

I did all the things you mentioned and a lot of other things but nothing worked. Ads are fine, but video is too dark  but ok on some sites. I'll try it some other time. Thanks for info.

That looks more like a problem with the sites or your video drivers than a problem with flash.

Was Windows 7 always on that laptop?
If so was it ever reinstalled (one way or another)?
Is fully up-to-date with all Windows and driver updates?
Do you only have the flash plug-in installed or the Flash Player as well?

Hi Eddy, I got videos ok today, but flash player has not worked every day for the past 2 or 3 weeks.I made changes to flash player yesterday, maybe I clicked on the right places. I'll soon find out. I also thought about a video drivers problem and looking into it. Windows 7 was always on the laptop -never re-installed.It's 2 years old. Most times I use a desktop with win xp which I know much better, but it was broken (fixed now). So had to get to know more about win 7. I updated it.I installed flash player and and plug-in and uninstalled from Adobe about 30 times. Frustrating.
