Title: Screen goes dead at login

Hi. I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 on a ThinkPad x61.

Every time I try to log into the website, my computer hangs for a second, then the screen goes black. If I close and open it (cause it to sleep and wake up) the screen will flicker  then come back on, but with only half of the backlight on. Adjusting the brightness makes it erratically go bright and dim. The browser is stuck by this time, and the system's menu bar has disappeared. the only way to get it all back to normal is a forced hard reboot. Any ideas?
