Title: accessibility issues again!
Post by: REDACTED on August 02, 2014, 02:27:51 PM
hi,
with the 9.0 release, yet more accessibility issues were introduced into avast
firstly, avast still will not work with the latest snapshot version of nvda without disabling self protection
the other issue is much more critical
avast's system tray icon's right-click  menu isn't accessible
when hitting applications on the system tray icon  of  avast   nothing happens and the ram usage of avastui.exe increases to about 16 mb until the application is restarted
due to this i've been forced to uninstall avast and am currently using windows defender until this gets fixed
i've tried install reinstall etc with no results
i'm running the latest stable version of avast

What OS/SP?
What exact version of avast? (version and number)
What vps version?
How did you perform the remove/install ?

Do it like this and let's see what happens:
https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=147943.msg1074614#msg1074614

Disable Windows Defender before installing avast.

hi,
I will not reinstall the program again until this issue has been reviewed and fixed by the avast team
this is not an issue specific to this pc
it happens with all pcs
I have avast installed on other systems and all have the same problem
my idea would be that somehow the icon has some kind of animation on it
the same problem happened with eset's interface once
I disabled icon animations and that fixed it with eset
so if avast has any animations this would almost certainly resolve the issue
could someone here contact the member of the avast team who is responsible for accessibility and notify him about the issue?

If you disabled icon animation on eset and that worked for you; have you tried the same with avast, disable icon animation and see if that works ?

avastUI > Settings > Appearance - Tray Icon - uncheck the 'Animate the icon when scanning' option.

hi,
tried the reinstall
another accessibility issue that I discovered is starting with the latest 9..0.0.21 version the installation process is largely inaccessible
this is probably due to the self defense running during install
unchecking icon animations didn't work
the icon probably moves or shimmers or something since when I move to it the icon's right-click menu isn't accessible and 1 second after I move to the icon my screen reader says unknown
going without the tray icon is impossible since disabling the shields under settings is also inaccessible
when the menu comes up with the various disable times 10 mins, 1 hour etc it is impossible to activate it
hitting enter won't work
could someone here report this to the avast team

It appears that you did not uninstall Avast properly: http://www.avast.com/en-us/uninstall-utility (http://www.avast.com/en-us/uninstall-utility) - it should be in Safe Mode and there is a new Uninstaller.  Try this and see if this resolves your problem.

hi,
this would probably work if this issue was only on this machine
but I have multiple machines with the same issue
what parts remain after uninstall anyway?
when was the new uninstaller released?

There could be remnants remaining that are removed with the Avast Uninstaller Tool used in Safe Mode.  And the new tool is for the versions after I believe version 7 (made for the newer versions).

@ the ghost,
I run windows 8.1 with the latest updates and avast! on several computers both 32 and 64 bit versions.
As you can see, I don't have any of the problems your describing.
It sounds like there's something else running that's causing a conflict.

h'\
can you access the  right-click menu with the nvda screen reader
my issue isn't accessing the icon normally (a normal person can do this on my pc) my issue is accessing the icon with a screen reader which is broken
specificly the nvda screen reader

Sorry but I don't use the program.
I'm alerting a Moderator and hopefully someone from Avast! can address this problem for you.

Don't leave any options unused. Do both. :)

Hi,
I am trying to reproduce your issue with the information you provided.

OS: Win8.1
Avast: 2014.9.0.2021 (Avast Free)
NVDA: dowloaded from http://community.nvda-project.org/wiki/Snapshots ("Thu Jul 31 09:27:55 2014" version)

But everything works OK, tray icon is accessible and the options are read correctly. Self-defense module is turned on.

Do you have any other screen readers installed? Or perhaps another antivirus?

Make sure your settings look like in settings.png and let me know.  :)

hello,
first, how did you get the program to work with self defense enabled?
even the install screen where you have to check google chrome is inaccessible
can you read the context menu of the system tray icon?
could you post here the steps you took to access the icon if you managed to access it
and the steps you took to install the product and disable/enable the shields
and do you mind posting the settings in those images into text
I can't read the images with a screen reader
could it be a problem with 64 bit?
or the update 1 of windows 8.1
I am not running another antivirus while I use avast

Are you sure? Windows 8 comes standard with windows defender. Did you disable it?

Defender in Windows 8 is automatically disabled when avast! is installed. :)

I also run 64b system so that shouldn't be the problem.

I didn't take any special steps to get the program to work.

First I had downloaded Avast! Free Antivirus directly from avast web site (link: http://www.avast.com/index )
then I rebooted the PC and downloaded NVDA from this link: http://nvda.sourceforge.net/snapshots/master/nvda_snapshot_master-10319,6c0a602.exe
and everything worked.

I'm not sure which install screen with google chrome check you mean though. The only options I have after running NVDA is "Install NVDA on this computer" and "Continue running". Both options read avast system tray icon context menu correctly.

The only difference is that I run clean Windows 8.1 not updated Windows 8.

You said you have several PCs with this issue, are all of them updated Windows 8.1?
It seems unlikely but it's possible that it's caused by the update.

Sorry for the pictures. The first shows opened avast gui with checked Self-defense and running NVDA next to avast in system tray.
The second shows system settings. Click Start -> type "screen reader" -> click "Use screen reader"
Make sure everything is unchecked especially in section "Other programs installed" if present.

hi,
not all of my pcs are updated to windows 8.1
the self-defense issue and the system tray issue are all reproducable on other oses
were you able to move through through the settings using the keyboard? and access system tray settings with the keyboard
I didn't reboot my pc after reinstalling avast
perhapse a reboot is required for avast to detect screen readers
about the install google chrome setting
I was refering to the install google chrome setting in avast install
this is inaccessible at present
the other components can be checked and unchecked with flat review
and at the final screen before install avast lists components to be installed so if there is something I don't want I can go back and uncheck it

hi,
an update on the system tray bug
I decided to do an install with the online installer
and the install was accessible
after the install I was able to access the avast! system tray icon
however after a reboot the tray icon became inaccessible again
this is such a wierd issue

hi,
this issue is resolvable with the nvda systray addon
with the nvda  systray addon I was able to access the system tray icon
however since version 7 avast cannot be used with the nvda screen reader without disabling self defense
but the jaws screen reader got allowed through self defense by avast
could the member of the avast team who works on accessibility with avast also allow the nvda screen reader through the self defense
it would be nice not needing to turn off self defense
