Title: avast! Antivirus Free 9.0.20.21 and Firefox 32.0
Post by: REDACTED on September 03, 2014, 11:28:47 AM
I installed avast! Free 9.0.20.21 (no Tools) on my XP Pro/Sp3 computer and find that Firefox 32.0 is no longer functional.  Many screens and menu actions don't work, as also described/discussed here: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=150399.0

As suggested, I renamed the file snxhk.dll and, for now at least, the Firefox functionality is back.  WHY, then, hasn't avast! fixed this or at least provided a heads-up about the fix during installation?  Beats me!

Did you try to do a repair of avast? But then again i have doubts that it won't may not work because the link that you provided they had Firefox 26 and some had firefox 29. Firefox 32 is the latest version it should have been fixed? Did you try to post this issue in Firefox forum? I think it has got to do with Firefox. Also file a report about this to Avast Support Ticket via here https://support.avast.com/ and give as much detail as possible. Since I am not using Firefox anymore and my younger brother is using it and he also has Avast installed I will ask him if he has this problem or not?

UPDATE: My younger brother's Firefox 32 and Avast Free 2014 is working fine! The link that you provided and on that link the user reported several issues listed below:

If i try to upload picture from certain websites, dialog (browse window) don't pop-up.
- If I select "Save Page As" from the menu in FireFox, nothing happens.
- If I go into options and specify "Download| Save files to" and click on "Browse", nothing happens.
- If I click on a file link (e.g. pdf, word) and I select "Save File", nothing happens.
- If I try "Export bookmarks to HTML", nothing happens.
- If I uninstall Avast, above issues are gone.

Those following issues are not present on his laptop. Perhaps a minority users are affected by this! Like I said before trying posting that to mozilla forum and Avast Support ticket. They will try solving it.

No problems with Firefox 32.0 on my avast versions 9.0.2021 (win7) and 10.0.2022 beta1 (winXP Pro) systems.

Thanks.  I tried Firefox 30, 31 and 32.0 (currently installed) and they all showed the same symptoms.  I uninstalled avast! and Firefox worked fine again.  I even re-imaged the drive to an earlier time and installed avast! .. but same issues.  Judging from comments by others, it seems to be an avast! problem rather than Firefox.  But, frankly, I don't know.

The fix, reportedly, originally suggested by avast! support, works.  And as long it does I'm okay.  Not sure this is the time to start a support ticket.  But, if I run into trouble again I may.  Perhaps avast! support jumps in with a comment.  We'll see.

Postscript: let me quote from the original posting regarding the fix.  It's from message #15 (June 20, 2014) in this thread:

http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/338727-firefox-file-dialog-save-open-export-etc-does-not-appear/

In the meantime, Avast has provided me with a workaround from their end of things.  Namely, renaming the snxhk.dll file ("c:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\snxhk.dll") so that it doesn't try to activate, and then restarting Firefox.  Obviously, there is some kind of interaction between Avast's sandbox (which, I didn't even install/activate) and the Outpost Firewall.  Avast has indicated that they are going to incorporate a more permanent fix for this into their next version - but, I'm not sure exactly when that will be.
