You'll find the removal tool for McAfee at:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?lc=1033&id=TS101331 (http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?lc=1033&id=TS101331)
It needs to be run to remove the parts left behind after using the add/remove function.
After you've totally removed McAfee, reboot your system, then do a repair of avast!:
add/remove > select avast and scroll down to select Repair.
Reboot your system and let us know if that fixes your problem.
If not, a clean install may be needed. More on that if the repair doesn't work.:)

Did you install an older version of Avast ? The reason I ask is that it is in the Alwil folder which to the best of my knowledge has not been used in a few years
Also you might want to replace Poki with an adfree version of windows 8 start menu http://www.classicshell.net/
Download Avast Uninstall Utility (http://www.avast.com/en-gb/uninstall-utility) to your Desktop.
Download the correct version of Avast
Avast Free (http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe)
Avast Pro (http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup.exe)
Avast Internet Security (http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe)
Avast Premier (http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup.exe)
Disconnect from the net
Uninstall Avast via control panel
- Run the uninstall tool and accept the reboot to safe mode
- Once complete reboot your system
- Reinstall Avast

hello, I ran across your procedure, I also deleted Poki, but the problem remains. I also cleaned up the registry with ccleaner, and made a defragmentation.
help!

OK next will be to try a kick start, download and run the latest VPS from here http://www.avast.com/en-gb/download-update
-
fact downloaded and executed. He tells me to update esguito successfully . Now look tomorrow morning to see if it automatically update?
-
OK let me know as that will update the defs servers so there may have been a glitch in your copy
-
ok I 'll know tomorrow morning, if you want to have in the meantime I am attaching the log that I returned Faber .
-
Hello So as I said yesterday I Know Something Done about updates. Pc automatic updates turned on, but I'm not there. I am attaching my avast screen .
-
Could you try a manual update and let me know what error you get
-
no error
-
So the manual update worked and it is just not doing it automatically
-
Exactly the problem is that the updates do not automatically make them myself , but I have to get them manually.

Try being a little more patient. Each time you manually update, the cycle starts all over again.
You're not unprotected if you didn't get that VPS update as long as you're receiving streaming updates.
A watched water pot never seems to boil.......
Give it 24 hrs and see if you receive an auto update. If not, then it's time to dig deeper. :)

Thank you Bob , I will follow your advice and also try to see what happens even though I have already tried to do this before you write in the forum. Let's try this solution and we give 24 hours time ( to avoid mistakes even a little more ) and see if I get an automatic update . I do not know if it can be useful, but the pop up commercial avast appear to me .

A screenshot of that pop-up would be helpful.

The pop ups are classic avast , type the vpn etc. , to date still no update, I did spend 48 hours also.
help
-
this is the classic pop up that i see, but nothing about update def, and nothing new def.
-
14-1 was the last one yesterday and I have only just received 15-0

I am sorry for getting into the discussion, but I have been having the same problem as you: no automatic updates since I have moved from my old pc to the new laptop running windows 8/8.1. Everything works fine on my mother's pc running windows 7 also everything is fine on my cousin's laptop(which is identical to mine, except he is running windows 7 professional). I receive the streaming updates but no definition updates. I've tried leaving it for 3 days: no updates. Manual updates work fine. Also, the first update just after Avast was installed went fine by itself and that was the last automatic update I received. I am sad because I had to move from Avast because of that. I was using Avast since version 4=((((( I hope it is going to be fixed in the version 10

the problem persists hope for an update that will solve
