Title: Archive is password protected?
Post by: pilsus on August 04, 2005, 03:25:30 PM
After I have run the virus control I receive a message where I have 8269 files that the virus control is unable to scan because archive is password protected.
And when I try to move the files to the chest I receive this message: Error occurred during moving files to chest: Archive is password protected.
How can I check these files for virus? Is it safe to delete them?
The names on the files end with .reg, .Ini, .ga, .gbd3, .grp2 I donĀ“t know what intention these files have. They mainly have different numbers in the name, like 26582, 26583, 26584 etc.

???

Avast (or for that mather any av) can't scan files that are encrypted (password protected).
The location(s) of the files may give a idea of what they are.

avast! also tells you where the files are, from this you should find that these are probably from Spybot S&D or AdAware or similar program that protects it quarantine/backup/recovery files, etc.

Some examples of the locations would be helpful.

avast doesn't know the password (nor would you) so it can't check them. This doesn't mean they are infected, just that they couldn't be scanned. You shouldn't go deleting files, once gone you may well have a problem (and there is insufficient information here for anyone to say they are safe to delete). For the same reasons you may well have problems moving them to the chest (leave them alone and investigate) the reason they are password protected is valid.

If you have any anti-adware/spyware programs (as mentioned above) do some hose keeping and remove old (two weeks to a month old) quarantined/deleted/backup/recovery items, etc.

Well, thanks.

I shall try to  remove old quarantined items etc. from my spyware programs..

* The location of these files are c:\documents and settings\All Users\
