Title: Avast will not open
Post by: AaronZ on August 05, 2005, 05:50:45 PM
Should I be concerned that when I try to open the Avast program to run a scan or schedule a scan of my computer, that it does not open?  Yet the automatic scanner is still functioning and scanning.  Please let me know if I should be concerned.

1. What version of avast do you have?
2. How are you trying to open avast for a scan?
You should right click the avast icon and select Start avast! Antivirus.
Or if there is an avast! Antivirus icon on your desktop double click that.

Try running C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashSimp2.exe and tell us what you get...  ;)

When I run that application, my mouse cursor changes to the thinking, and then in a short time changes back to the normal pointer.

I am however able to right click on the C:\ Drive and scan it.

When I returned home, Avast found a virus (and I forgot to write it down).  I deleted the file.  But I am unable to open the LOG file to view it.

Avast Information:
Version: Jul2005 (4.6.691)

I am trying to open Avast for a scan by right-clicking on the icon by the tasktray and choosing avast! Antivirus.

EDIT:  I was able to find the log file and found the name of the viryus:  Win32:Kuang2

This may have been a false positive detection, depending on two things, its location (example (C:\windows\system32\infected-filename.xxx)?) and if you have ever used Panda's on-line scanner (as panda doesn't encrypt its virus signature file, so other AVs detect the signature as if it were a real example of the virus).

In my opinion it is never the best option to take the nuclear option and delete the file as your first option (unless you are 100% sure), rather move to the Chest and investigate.

Here is the entry in the log file dealing with this virus it found:

Sign of "Win32:Kuang2" has been found in "C:\DOCUME~1\Aaron\LOCALS~1\Temp\V3KSFHb04144" file.

I am unable to open the Avast program to run scans.

Can someone please fix this?

Maybe if you tried a repair

1. Control panel
2. Add remove programmes
3. select Avast
4. select change/remove
5. on the left hand side should be a repair option select this
6. you need to be online to repair

Let's know what happens

Can you delete all your internet temporary files?
To do this go to Internet explorer >Tools > Internet options > Delete files > Click delete all offline content (just to be sure) > click ok.
It might take some time to delete them.

After that, maybe running avast! after you Boot in Safe Mode (press F8 while booting and choose the proper option).

This doesn't appear to be a false positive caused by having used Panda, rather a file downloaded into your internet temp folder, do as Tech says.

What type of scan are you trying to do?
How are you trying to open avast to run scans? - did you right click the avast icon, select Start avast! Antivirus.
Are there any error/warning messages, etc?

Right click, context menu scan requires that you have the Explorer Extension functions ticked

The repair did nothing but update the program but didnt repair the installation.  I will try again from SafeMode when I return this evening.  Thanks for all of your help.

EDIT:  What I am trying to do is access the main program itself to tell it run a full scan of my system.  IE: Like you would open Norton and the main interface would open and allow you to run scans.  The Right-Click Explorer scans WORK!

Run C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashSimp2.exe
Then, from the menu, schedule a boot time scanning.

Then did you try what I mentioned?

Once the memory check is complete it will open the Simple User Interface where you can scans all local drives or select folders or scan removable media.
