Title: What Browser you use?
Post by: Inu-Ya on August 18, 2005, 02:40:43 AM
I use Netscape's 8.0.3.3 Browser and i love it! The new theme *Modern Modoki* makes the Browser stand out for itself and i intend on usin it.

I love that you can display FireFox our Internet Explorer on it. Really cool browser if you know how to get around the bugs.

Post your thoughts , Comments , and Browsers that you like most.

Primary is Firefox.
Secondary is Avant for windows update (and sites that don't display well unless you use IE).
Also ran IE6 SP2, because you can't get rid of it (and you have to keep it up to date because it is an integral part of the OS).

Ha, I'm now tryin out AOL Explorer 1.1 (Beta)! So... far its good but... has some un needed icon on the side bar. Other than that the browser is great and stand out for a great IE Based Browser.

I would check and see if using AOHell Explorer, you browsing/cache/etc. are being checked by Web Shield, I suspect they are not as previously AOHell's browser didn't use the standard http protocol so it isn't scanned by Web Shield.

Ricky you use IE more than you are even aware of... you wouldn't be able to update your OS if you don't have your IE up and running. Firefox is great, but you have to know that some sites and some Javascript codes still don't work properly on Firefox. Everything has it's good sides and it's bad sides, so people have to find few things and combine them... because... as we all know there is nothing perfect in this World, so we have to improvise sometimes...

It is with browsers like with other things: It isn't the size of the dog in the fight, it is the size of the fight in the dog.

FF updates often because it's still being developed.

Hi bob3160,

It better be, and that goes for all browsers, and software as such. Everything is being constantly developed, and you and me too I hope, for else we have abandoned ware, software or programs that the developer left. there would not be an IE 7.0 beta as IE new versions was not being developed, that is constantly re-developed. A program that ïs "as is" per definition is a "dangerous"program, and you will use "at your own risk". I type this on a fully patched, fully updated XP professional with SP2 in a fully patched IE browser, still Bob, I am doing this "on my own risk", and at home I have FF with NoScript and ad-block, and self-made filters, anti-spoof check, plug-in link scanner, but there also I use this browser "at my own risk". Read these Eula's boy.

By being developed I simply referr to getting the kinks out. We all know that there are still
compatability issues in FF. One of the main reasons why I don't use it on a regular basis.
All software updates for security reasons. The more popular software requires more frequent updates
because it's constantly under attack.

Firefox is less vulnerable to adware and spyware, No integration into your OS (so if your browser is compromised, your OS isn't), No activeX, No BHOs (browser helper objects, that really should be categorised adware helper object), No Contest.

I like the Opera browser. I use Firefox too and IE for updates only, but I really like Opera. JMHO.

Is Firefox more secure than Opera? Is that why you all prefer it?

Hi Kakapo

I have seen the black Swan again to-day. And the grouse made a lot of noise, while we were out on our bikes to-day. Well Opera is a very good browser and a safe one as such, see what you find about this browser here: http://www.fravia.com/. I like Firefox because in the background you can feel the two challenging parties: Big MS and GOGL. The return of the Netscape sphinx, first as firebird, then as firefox. I personally like the tweakability, the xpi filters you can write yourself, a gorgeous add-on like Adblock and NoScript, the lovely in-browser Dr.Web link scanner to pre-scan links for malware and script. ConQuery where I run all sorts of search-engines, like Scroogle and SpywareGuide. If there is a little problem it is because IE still is at the basis of your Os, but that is the same when you have Opera. If you feel good with Opera stay with Opera, if you are fully patched and updated stay with IE or an analog browsertype. One advice for all browsers: allow Java only when you absolutely need it and it is safe to run. Use flash in stead of Active X, and run AVX script wall as part of your MS Scripting Host to prevent VSB etc not to do anything out of the ordinary. Browser security should be a first line of defense, and often it is the main vector of virus and mal- or scumware.

I never got to grips with Opera, only ever used it for cross browser tests on web site design. Have you got the pro or Ad supported version, I never saw anyting wth paying for and didn't like the idea of Ads in the browser.

As far as security goes, they are both close but much better than IE.

Kakapo,

I have the latest versions of both Firefox and also the paid for version of Opera. I really haven't got a security preference using either of these two browsers. They both are IMHO much safer to use than I.E. I believe your just fine with your Opera, if you like it and are used to it I would say stick with it. Have a nice day.  :)

Exactly where it is now on my computer at least. I use GreenBrowser which is an IE based Tabbed browser.
However, I use GreenBrowser in conjunction with:
DropMyRights - Browsing the Web and Reading E-mail Safely as an Administrator (http://msdn.microsoft.com/security/securecode/columns/default.aspx?pull=/library/en-us/dncode/html/secure11152004.asp)

Thank you all for your replies.
Polonus - I miss the black swans. Since the flood and landslides which filled the lagoon in May, they no longer visit. (No water left). I used to love watching them  fly in that cooperative V formation to land on the lagoon at sunset. The delightful noises they made as they communicated between themselves. Now local bodies want to fill the lagoon in permanently, no doubt for future in-fill housing to glean more rates, but I wonder where the birds will go as there are so few natural wetlands left here (about 1% of what we had in the 1970s) as they've all been drained for farming. It's a money thing. It'll cost too much to clean the lagoon and restore it to it's once pristine environment. There are a few of us trying to get the lagoon restored, but we know we are fighting City Hall....... :'(

I will investigate FF a little further now that you've explained those extensions to me. Dr Web sounds great and Conquery is just what the researching writer needs! Thank you. Give your swan a "peep" from me and redline the old mo/cy for me just one time! We're allowed to do only 100km/hr here. (Had to sell my 1000cc bike! Too many speeding offences.......Still dream of Moto Guzzis tho'.)

DavidR. I use the free Opera browser. I try not to pay for things that are available free - like Avast! and Kerio. (Scottish genetics!!) It took me a wee while to learn to use Opera, and I don't like their free mail prog. as it's too small, but as far as ads go I have one small, text type banner above the tool bar and nothing worse than most other browsers. I like the cookie controls too. As in all things, personal preference is different between humans and that's a good thing too!

Neal63 It's raining cats, dogs and elephants here today but as today's a Day Off I'll have a great day. Sure is better than laying bricks!

Thank you all for your comments and advice. It is much appreciated. You teach me well - thank you.

Wishing you all happy laughter filled days
k

I use Enigma, which uses the IE rendering engine and Kmeleon, which uses the Mozilla rendering engine.
Enigma for the few sites that require active-x, like windowsupdate  and Kmeleon for the rest.

Have a look at :  http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/

I gave up on Opera since they started talking about building a P2P thing in the new versions.

Fast.

Hi Inu-Ya,

I always use IE, but sometimes Sleipnir.
Is this Sleipnir only a Nihon version of Browser. Inu Ya,  I have a question for you. Firefox is a very good and safe browser, but it does not show Chinerse or Japanese characters as a standard, only ???.  Can you make it read Japanese or Chinese characters? If I want to search Baidu Searchengine for instance all it genberates is only question marks and some pictures, while Cental European and Cyrillic Script (Russian) is no problem and comes standard. Is this a blind spot in FF?
Who knows this?

Here some tweaks to make FF faster, use at your own risk:

Who knows this?

No, and no.  Sleipnir has Japanese/English version (http://sleipnir.pos.to/cgi-bin/d/download.cgi?dl=sleipnir166z), Traditional Chinese version (http://sleipnir.pos.to/cgi-bin/d/download.cgi?dl=sleipnir166cht) and Korean version (http://sleipnir.pos.to/cgi-bin/d/download.cgi?dl=sleipnir141kr).  Well, I wonder why it doesn't have a German version.  All the versions are 1.66 (the last stable version) except the Korean, which is 1.41, and 2.00 is under beta testing.

Any Mozilla based browser should be able to "read" Japanese or Chinese.  In fact, Mozilla is made of Mozi (Characters in Japanese)+Godzilla(That Japanese huge monster).

On Topic, I mostly use a Mozilla alternative but, at times, Sleipnir.  I never use IE.

Edit:On the second thought, I think you might be using OS other than XP/2000, in which case, you are not prompted to install necessary fonts.  The current Mozilla adopted the function of the recent Windows.  However, if your OS is older Windows or Linux…

BTW, I think one of the possible reasons why FF does not seem to be so popular in Asia is that there are already IE alternatives such as Maxthon and Sleipnir.

Just give your email address, no need to sign on newsletter. The code is not sent by mail but given in that web site.

I got Opera, but will stick to my heavily customized Firefox.
