Title: Free uninstall problem
Post by: REDACTED on January 03, 2015, 08:17:00 PM
Avast free quit working on my 8.1 computer. So I reinstalled 2015. Nope. The icons just sit there, can't open them. Simple, go to control panel and uninstall. Whoops. That started, but quit responding, and the window is now stuck on my screen. End task doesn't help. How do I get rid of it? The goal is to uninstall and start over. Will doing something in safe mode solve the problem? I'm lost, as usual.

If you want to perform a clean installation, use not only control panel but also the uninstall tool.
This has been explained many times already.
Please use the search option before posting.

Please see How-To link in my signature on clean un & re-install.

Also, make 100% sure you've uninstalled any previous A/Vs....not just standard uninstall but full removal programs.

Gosh, I'm new to avast, and didn't know there was a forum. The uninstall tool just sits there too. Best to just blunder along and see what happens. Checking out those other tips. thanks.

FYI rbmc, Avast users also used a tool called Avast Cleanup Tool that was made by one of the forum users named RejZors. When you do a search of the Avast Cleanup Tool you will find that this tool is also used after using Avast Uninstall Utility. Since avast release of 2015 this tool (Avast Cleanup Tool) won't be required anymore as the Avast Uninstall Utility does an excellent job. So after uninstalling Avast from add/remove only use the Avast Uninstall Utility and run it in normal mode and the tool will ask you if you want this tool to automatically run your computer in safe mode click yes and follow instructions.

Glad to be back again after having a 5 day holiday  :)
