I have been using Avast Free for several years now without problem, until very recently.
I decided to pay and upgrade to the Pro version 2015
Whenever I start my laptop none of the shields nor the Avast Background Service start automatically. The rest of Avast starts and seems to function fine, but these specific components do not. Now every time I start up my laptop I need manually start the Shields and background service.
After looking through some older threads I have tried using the "repair" option in the Avast uninstaller to no effect (including reboot). I have also tried completely uninstalling (including reboot) and then subsequently reinstalling Avast, also to no effect.
After a quick search I've found the relevant uninstall tool (https://www.avast.com/en-us/uninstall-utility) and will try using it to remove avast. I completed this in safe mode. restarted, restarted again, installed and I have the same issue.
So Basically I'm back where I started. The uninstaller did not appear to have any discernible effect on the behavior of Avast.
Also, no definition or software updates work properly.
I am running Windows 8.1 64 bit.

3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.

OK all services are good, so lets now check the veracity of the files. This can be caused by the wrong version system file being present
Open an elevated command prompt
Type Command in the search box
Right click Command Prompt when it appears and select run as administrator
In the black box that opens type in the following command :
sfc /scannow
Then press enter
On completion reboot and let me know if the problem is still present
-
It finds errors but can't fix all.
Problem persists.
chkdsk /f /r also did not help.
-
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833
Did you ran sfc like that?
-
Yes I did.
With elevated privileges, and at c:\windows\system32\
-
I am just looking at the Avastsvc now using dependency walker to see if I can find an easy way for you to use it
Meanwhile could you set wuauserv Service to auto and see if that helps
-
Reboot after setting it to automatic.
-
Done, no change sadly.
-
Hi, any success with the dependency walker? :)
-
Hi, any success with the dependency walker? :)
Be patient, he'll be back later today.
-
Yes, and no it does show all the dependencies and the failures however, it does take a long time to determine where an error lies. As I am showing a few errors related to .net 1.1 on my system but all works well. What I would like to do now is an easier way and to check if there is another driver or service causing the delay
In the search box type Msconfig and select the programme that appears at the top
1.In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click Selective Startup on the General tab.
2.Click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
NoteThe Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.
3.Click the Services tab.
4.Click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box.
5.Click Disable All, and then click OK.
6.Tick Avast so that it will be the only third party service to start, click OK again
7.When you are prompted, click Restart.
Does Avast now start properly
-
This also did not work sorry.
-
Do you have Microsoft dotnet 1.1 installed
-
It doesn't look like that I do.
I will install it now.
-
It didn't change
-
What's the Log-on account for the "avast! Antivirus" service?
-
I did a clean up and re-install now that .NET framework 1.1 is installed, but that changed nothing.
There are 2 AVAST services - both running under "Local System" option
1. "avast! Antivirus" - set to automatic start
2. "AvastVBox COM Service" - set to manual start
-
Could you go to services, right click Avast antivirus and select properties
Go to the dependencies tab
Are there any yellow exclamation marks there ?
-
No. It looks good - please see attached.
I might add that I had no issues with Avast Free beforehand.
-
OK lets try something
Uninstall Avast using the removal tool
Install Avast free.... Does it now work ?
If so then do an upgrade from within the GUI
Download Avast Uninstall Utility (http://www.avast.com/en-gb/uninstall-utility) to your Desktop.
Download the correct version of Avast
Avast Free (http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe)
Avast Pro (http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup.exe)
Avast Internet Security (http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe)
Avast Premier (http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup.exe)
Disconnect from the net
Uninstall Avast via control panel
- Run the uninstall tool and accept the reboot to safe mode
- Once complete reboot your system
- Reinstall Avast
----------
-
None of that works.
-
I am out of ideas at the moment, I will pass this onto the mods to see if they have any input
-
Thank you all the same.
So in summary, I have to manually start the services, and updates don't work.
-
Are you getting streaming updates ?
-
Would you go to the Recovery tab of the Service Properties Window?
-
1. I do not get streaming updates.
2. here is the recovery tab of the services
-
RESOLVED.
Well kind of.
I had a sinking feeling my PC was the issue, so I bit the bullet and wiped it.
I did a fresh Windows 8.1 Pro install.
All windows updates. 3 x reboots
Installed .NET 1.1 reboot
Installed .NET 1.1 SP1 reboot
Installed Avast Pro 2015 with License file
Reboot
Avast auto-sarts as expected
Avast updates as expected.
I will now reinstall all my apps.
Thank you all for your assistance on what I hope turns out to be a good product.
-
I must admit this was unusual as none of the usual culprits showed as a problem
-
I want to thank you all the same! The support was great and helpful.
