Hi,
I have got a new PC with Win 8.1 64 bit. Installaed avast free (currently 2015.10.0.2208). In most (if not all) cases I now try to download something from Internet (using Firefox), the download does not seem to be complete (if it is an exe, the exe cannot be run; if it is a zip, the zip cannot be opened). After switching avast off, it works. For example:
I have just downloaded a zip of about 23Mb, three times with avast switched on, once with avast disabled. All four files have different sizes, differing by between 40 and 1000 kB; and all three downloaded with avast on are corrupted.
Thanks for any help.

Is windows defender disabled?
Is (or was) there other security software on the system?
Tried with another browser?
Is downloading through ftp working?

Thanks for replying.
- Windows defender is enabled.
- There was McAfee preinstalled. I think I deinstalled it completely, at least I got no error message during de-installation, do not see it anymore in the "Programs and features" list, and do not find remaining files or processes in the Task Manager nor in the registry.
- With Internet Explorer -> same problem
- I donĀ“t know how to do an ftp-download; probably easy to find out, but to test I would have to best a zip file which can be downloaded via http and via ftp, to compare.

- Disable Windows Defender
- Remove McAfee and avast completely.
- Perform a clean installation of avast

Hi,
thanks very much, in particular for the link to the tools for removing the programs completely. Having done this and the reinstallation of avast, it seems to work correctly now!

Always good to hear a problem is solved.
The link is to one of my websites.
Many people don't know that often remnants remain after uninstalling a application from control panel.
And those remnants can cause conflicts with newly installed applications.
