Software version: Latest (2015.10.0.2208), only AV installed no firewall, default settings with PUP enabled
OS: Windows 7 SP1
Previous AV: MSE (already uninstalled)
Firewall: Comodo Free, HIPS Disabled.
Problem:
I just installed latest avast AV to replace MSE on my system last week. On 3 separate occasions the CPU usage for avastsvc.exe would randomly spike to 100% on random occasions even with no application running. Disabling all real time protection (file/web/mail) would stop the CPU usage.
The latest one would be last night when I left my computer running overnight with no software running.
When I awake I hear my CPU fan was spinning full force for god knows how long already with avastsvc again being the culprit taking up 100% CPU
I have fairly beefy system (i7 4770k, 16gb RAM) and when running normal system scan Avast only takes up ~8-10% CPU usage. So I have no idea what could be causing this...
Solutions attempted:
- Full system scan with MBAM and Avast, 0 positive result
- Repair installation via program/features
- Reset settings
- Adding following line to webshield.ini
[General]
UseStreamFilter=0
Now the problem is completely random so I can't reproduce it at will, any idea what might be causing this or a known solution ?
-
Did full re-install and it happened again while I was gaming.
I disabled the active protection one by one this time and discovered that it's the "Web Shield" that caused it
Any idea why ?
-
Sometimes it does to me, and on certain occasions you just disable security web and on again after a few minutes without surfing while at other times as this morning I did redo the updates, and returned to normal, however, that there is a problem about avast is obvious
-
Not really an option since I often leave my PC running 24/7
I can't be having this occur randomly and have my CPU cooking for hours end when I can't stop the process.
Looks like I have to find another AV solution

This started happening to me sometime end of January. Happened three times, bang cpu at 100%. Installed a SSD and reinstalled windows 8.1 two weeks ago. It has also happened three times so far. The latest today. Only option is to reboot.

Problem with avast... multiple postsin the last 24 hours.
-
Look in taskmanager to see if there is a svchost running at 90+%
It there is use process explorer from Sysinternals (Microsoft), to see if dnsrslvr.dll is using it.
If it does, kill the process and the problem should be solved.
-
If it is dnsrslvr.dll that is causing it, it is not (yet) fixed.
avast does know about the problem and are working on it.

This is BAD....is this gonna get fixed? I don't want my power supply or fans to burn up...my computer isn't even that old!! It goes to 100% and I can't do anything...can't open a web page even. Had to go to the laptop to look it up to see if it was a virus. So scary!! Everything all of a sudden came to a standstill and I could barely type to my friend in google talk to tell her what was going on. I looked it up on the laptop and found I have to add lines to webshield.ini. I will if that's the only way I can fix it but shouldn't Avast do an update to fix it? I wouldn't wanna mess anything up. Anyway, I love Avast so much....I hope this can be fixed. It's the first time I've ever had a problem with Avast. I'm just glad it's not a virus. I did get it to stop with a cold boot.
As stated in a post above, I also have to run my computer 24/7, so I sure don't want it to burn up while I'm sleeping.
Thanks and p.s. I love Avast's Secure Line (unrelated to this), but just thought I'd put in a good word for it. Runs great and good vpn connections....not laggy.

Just a guess, none of you have the latest version installed...

Ladeedah,
there is no need to change webshield.ini unless someone from avast tells you.
The changes are for old(er) versions.

I've been having a load of 99% utilisation over the last few days on my Avast Internet Security so am going to give Eddy's suggestion of loading the beta version from https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=166576.0 a try.
thanks eddy

I installed the software from Eddys link on 26th Feb and have had no problems since
-
There is already a RTM version and the word is that this week or next week a final will be released ;)
-
I just added the offered update to Avast Premier yesterday, March 25, 2015, and now my CPU is ramping up to 100%.
Thanks, thanks a lot *@#-&^>! <:(

Same here; never had this problem with the free version, but after an upgrade(?really?) to Premium avastsvc keeps hitting high cpu useage. Premium? yeah, right!! 'Premium; is meant to mean 'better' not 'worse'!

I'll add my two cents also.
I had this problem about three weeks ago (Win 7, Toshiba Satellite laptop, Avast free edition).
But strangely, the problem disappeared about a week later. I just assumed that Avast corrected the problem.
