Title: VERY frustrated
Post by: CoJo on November 04, 2003, 05:22:40 PM
sigh...
I cannot get my email to work...I still have to manually activate the icons...and, at this point, I don't even know if my email--actually, my whole computer is safe.

So I am going to reread the manual and all the posts to my first request for help and see if I can correct whatever needs corrected.
I don't know what else to do...

Cojo,

I'm sorry it's proving so difficult.

When I asked about the files loaded and Vlk said click on the file name to get the Icon displayed, this was only ever meant to be a test, not a fix.

The fact that the Icon DID appear, would I suggest, inticate that the main Avast program is loading.

Ok so this is not helping you resolve the problem and have confidence in your A-V protection.

Just let me check.... you have tried de-installing and re-installing Avast Y/N?

I don't want to get in between Mr Technical and Vlk who have different views on whether Nortons old installation if affecting anything. So it would be really nice if a re-install would actually work.

With OE you shouldn't need to change any of the dotted quads (pop3 etc setup)... ie these should be left as they where without any Avast or othe AV program installed.

Btw... where did you obtain the copy of Avast, is it the latest version off of the website?.

Walker.

Hi Walker! and thanks for replying!

yes, I have unistalled/reinstalled--twice--and my version is the latest from the website itself. I also had used the utility to uninstall before I reinstalled...
It seems like it keeps getting worse with every action that I take :o
Perhaps if I go ahead and study the manual and replies, then I can figure out what I have done wrong! So, it looks like I will be very busy today :)

Walker, thank you for replying...I do so appreciate it.
I'm not ready to give up, though! They call us southern belles "steel magnolias" for good reason! ;D

Cojo,

I edited my last message... pls re-check you got it all  :)

I know it doesn't seem like it at the moment, but it is not too difficult to setup Avast and once done you will be happy.

There seems something silly or strange that we are missing here  :-\

yes, I agree, Walker, that something is not right ;)
and it is probably something that I am doing or not doing!
that is why I thought I should start from the begining :(
but I will not give up!!

Cojo,

How did you do your de-installa/re-installs.... did you reboot your machine before doing the re-install?

yes, Walker, I did...I followed Technical's suggestions on what to do...

I'm going to go ahead and start from the begining again!

Good luck.... fingers crossed  :) :) ;)

Let us know how you get on.
Title: Re:VERY frustrated
Post by: CoJo on November 04, 2003, 10:40:52 PM
all right...I used the removal utility for Avast! then reinstalled. The following are in my processes:
aswUpdSv.exe
ashMaiSv.exe
ashServ.exe
ashDisp.exe

again, I had to manually activate ashDisp.exe
I did a boot scan and no viruses showed up, although CTX was caught before the re-installation.

Outlook Express is still not working properly...when I try and send a message, I get an error message.
and when I want to get my messages, 2-3 come through and then I get the error message.
Help, please!

Cojo,

During the installation, you chose... not to alter any pop/smtp settings (ie did NOT put in 127....etc) y/n?  You also chose 'I use Outlook E' for your e-mail client Y/N?.

Vlk is on the forum at the moment.... lets see if we can attrack him  ;)

[EDIT] plus.... 'What' are the error messages saying exactly.
Title: Re:VERY frustrated
Post by: CoJo on November 04, 2003, 11:48:54 PM
 :-[

well, darn it...I was getting the error message because I made the mistake!! I sent a test message to myself and typed in the wrong number in my username...
;) now, Walker, we won't say anything to anyone else, OK?
I'm just glad it's working no matter how stupid I feel <g>

So...is it normal for me to have to manually activate the icons? I don't care if I do...I'm almost afraid to touch anything now :)

'Course the last time that I thought everything was all right, it didn't work after I logged off then later logged back on...

Cojo,

I really admire the way your sticking with it :).... well done  ;)

No, we still need to find out about 'why' the Icons are not showing in the taskbar.... you shouldn't have to keep clicking the file names to get them running

Can you tell us, what other Icons are in the taskbar and do the inactive ones come and go as there respective applications are loaded/unloaded?

Are you happy to have a look around and open you Avast4.ini file... not yet, later?.

Walker.

[edit] ps... sorry if I'm disappearing off the forum, I'm spending my time watching a Harley-Davidson program in N. Carolina  ;) [/edit]

Cojo,

If the Icons are there and working as you say.... you have done it  :) . That is all normal behaviour ;)

Can you switch off and on and get the Icons showing now?.

No, I'm in Spain... It's a long time since I've been to the Carolina's  :'(

Walker,

I rebooted and had to manually activate the a and i icons. they wouldn't come up by themselves ( needed a little help from me) :)

Spain...how lovely! I have a friend who moved there from England. Spain is one country that I am sorry I missed visiting while in Europe...did the youth hostel thing in Germany and France.

Oh blast.... I was thinking the Icons were appearing by themselves  :(

I'm sorry to ask more questions but it helps....

Did you install Avast into the 'default' location (folder). Can you just confirm the path to the Avast4 folder (also, is that where ashdisp is located?).

Can you open the Avast4.ini file and tell us what is in the sections named [MailScanner] and [Simple] and [VRDB]

You should find the Avast4.ini file in the Adwil/avast4/data folder, the description might be configuration settings.

Do Other Icons in the Taskbar come and go with their applications.

I am a Brit now moved to Spain  ;)

As Vlk said ashDisp.exe is, as you figured out, just the tray icon - if you don't like it, you can kill it... This process is actually responsible for all UI of the resident modules, including the virus alerts, updating windows etc... (the services never display anything, they "don't interact with the desktop" in MS tech parlance).

If avast tray icon missing the resident protection mau be still active (it runs by ashserv.exe and ashsimpl.exe). All of them are:

ashDisp.exe (App - actually, tray icon)
ashMaiSv.exe (App)
ashserv.exe (Service)
ashSimpl.exe (App, present only if console window is open)
aswUpdSv.exe (Service)

Cojo, try a full look at these foruns related to ashDisp.exe.

Suggestion: need way to stop ALL services/processes (http://www.avast.com/forum/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=1254;start=msg6802#msg6802)

Cojo,

It's the problem that is annoying, not you  ;) ;) ;)

Well you ini file has the same settings as mine in the relavent sections.

Do other icons on the system tray come and go as they should??? an example...the two computers for the internet connection???

Finally ... FOR NOW... it's 3:00am here in Spain :) . Get the Icons working manually.... click the files as you have been. Right click on the 'a' icon and check the pause providers from the menu... you should see that Outlook is listed (running), meaning your e-mail is protected.

We'll bash Vlk's ear in the morning and see if he has any suggestions.

Technicals references are good ones, but a little involved and some not yet resolved  :-\

But tonight...  ;) do other tray icons come and go???.... I'm wondering if it's XP  ???

Walker.

Technical, thank you...I will do this.
I tied ashDisp.exe to my start up folder, too.
I will finish this tomorrow as I am a bit overwhelmed with my stupidity and the sheer volume of informatin :)

and I must be honest about something right now...I am handicapped with Rheumatoid Arthritis. No worry as I am all right...but some of the drugs the doc gives me for pain impairs my comprehesion/cognition. All it means is that I sometimes have to read new things 2-3 times before I understand it and that makes me slow to act. I make jokes about being stupid but I really am not 8)...just adjusting to new things. When I was able to work, I did the same thing over and over again on the computer...I was a fraud analyist for a credit card processing company...so we used the same programs all the time. Since I have been on medical leave, I have been trying to learn more about computers.
So, I ask you to be patient while I follow your suggestions, ok?

Thank you, my friends, for your help. I felt that it was only fair to let you know that I am trying to do what you suggest.
CoJo

At you leasure... tommorrow or when ever. When I ask about other icons, I am talking about icons for other applications (programs). Are you saying that there are no others in the task bar... ie the two computers when you are connected to the internet etc etc. ?? If not, you might have a Windows config/settings issue which I find strange.

Have a good rest too.

Is it presently the case that you have these programs running in you processes, AFTER a reboot and PRIOR to you manually clicking on the files ??

Walker,

I've examined my own setup log out of curiosity, and it made sense to me.  I can compare CoJo's log with mine to look for glaring inconsistencies.  It might not be as effective as having one of the A-Team look at it, but I'm willing to have a go at it.

CoJo,

If you want me to check your setup log, send me a private message, and I'll respond with an e-mail address you can use to send the log to me.
