Title: bccavsvc.exe has a huge memory leak.
Post by: REDACTED on February 09, 2015, 10:25:08 PM
On a machine booted for 20-30 minutes it's 4Mb.

On an 'identical' configured machine running for a few hours it's at 145Mb.

Within a few hours the first machine will have this same process exploded to 140-150+Mb.

Seems pretty clear there are memory leak issues, thoughts?

Hi Mayahana,

What version of windows are you seeing this on ? I just tested a Windows 7 and 8.1 device, the 7 machine is running about 320k as opposed to 14k on the 8.1 machine.
Wanting to see if this is specifically related to windows 7.

Thanks!

Hi @Sigmon  I believe you mean “MB”  as a ” k” factor would mean that the service has an almost zero footprint , which is certainly not the case buddy.

Evaluating Avast Business on my corporate test network has shown that @ times the bbavsvc.exe service can rise to 550+MB. From our tests to date this would not appear to be Processor, System Manufacturer, Operating System or Application related. The mem footprint on the boxes increases across the all spectrum's.

Apart from this and other teething issues IMO the product has great benefits for home network / SMB’s users alike once the glitches are resolved.

Mike

Hi Guys,
@MikeMT you are correct sir! Sorry about that.

I was in the middle of doing some testing on this last night and decided to reboot my PC to get a clean run at it and long story short, I had no keyboard when it came back :-/
Then internet was down all day today.
Wonderful!

But back the subject at hand , I will get this reported and keep you guys posted on the status. Thanks For the info on this one.

Thanks!

Jeff

Hi @Sigmon as a matter of interest what is your relationship with the Avast team. Is it similar to @Iwalling?

Sorry to hear about the tales of woe re: keyboard & Internet

I realise that you can’t “Get Your Money & Chicks For Free” & Avast Business Cloud is not designed to compete against or to be a replacement for enterprise products. I do believe though that this package has the potential to successfully fill a gap in the SMB endpoint security market that is currently vacant.

Apart from the substantial memory leak issue that will hopefully be fixed ASAP. We also experience that symptoms when you click on Contact Avast Support in main the web portal management panel you get looped back to your management account page? Where does one go to report errors?

In the 1.5 weeks of our evaluation, the web portal management features have remained the same along with the Endpoint program version 2015.10.0.2503. Has anyone any news on fresh update deployments yet?

Should updates not be shortly forth coming I will put this project on hold for the time being as ATM I am not ready to implement this solution to any live endpoints or servers on my networks.

On a positive note along with the plus points that I have previously mentioned in prior posts, Avast Business Cloud plays well in Outlook, with the mail module catching all nasties @ the endpoint that I have pushed through from our Exchange & Kerio Connect Mail servers.

There are many features of the Avast Business Cloud solution that really “float my boat” & I look forward to endpoint management / stability bugs being resolved in the near future.

All the best

Mike

Mike,  (repeating from Wilders)

You've highlighted a real problem that needs to be fixed and promptly, thank you. It's now been identified and will be corrected in the next update which will occur in the next 5-7 business days at the latest.

Also on the point about Avast for Business being designed to compete against or replace an Enterprise product:  Our target is the small business,  and we're building to that feature set wise.  That does not mean we can't scale to Enterprise device counts (in fact, we can).  In some environments that look and feel like SMB but are more inline with the size of an Enterprise environment, our future feature set is likely to fit,  like K-12 Education for instance.

Now,  I think you may be referencing quality more here than what I've touched on.  Regardless of our user target,  quality is key,  we won't be less than Enterprise grade in quality just because of our SMB user target.  The product is currently just a few weeks out of the gate and you've found a real issue, together with issues that are known which are more feature improvements in our roadmap (like the inability to control PUP detections in policy that you and Mayahana have cited).  These will be fixed,  in short order.

Thanks for trusting Avast.

Luke many thanks again for your reply to my queries both here & @ the Wilders forum.

Your comments regarding future build quality & up & coming developments to the product further adhere me to endorsing / implementing your product within my group of companies once teething issues are resolved.

All being well I will be going live with this soon as it has already ticked many of the boxes that we require for an endpoint security solution in the areas that it covers.

Once again I wish you & your team every success in your new venture.

BR

Still got it on only one machine... until the Business Console service memory allocation glitch is corrected.
Looking good in the long-term though.

@Vladimyr.. Thanks again for being the original poster of this product over @ Wilders as I might gone unaware.

I still have ABS running on 4 boxes on my test network & all things being equal with the Avast development plan updates for the product will implement onto the workstations in one of my sites in the near future. I also look forward to testing ABS for a couple of MS file servers that I propose to install soon as long as the memory footprint has stabilized.

Came at an appropriate time as I have some Eset Endpoint licenses expiring soon.

@Vladimyr 2x that comment from MikeMT.  Very appreciative of your cross post,  thanks!

We're hard at work on the solution to the bug referenced - it won't be long before it's released.  Thanks again all for citing it.

Thanks guys :) but it was mostly due to... a "dreaded" popup in an Avast Free installation that sufficiently intrigued me to actually click on it! :o I'd noticed this "Avast for Business (cloud)" topic here on the forum but hadn't really paid any attention up to that point.

It's not important but I'm curious Luke. Is the memory leak just a "good old" missing line of code resulting in a command that keeps grabbing memory for an upcoming task that never eventuates? (I know, I know, it's probably much more complicated than that.)

Keep us posted on when a fix is likely.

Vladimyr,

Glad we delivered messaging that piqued your interest!

On the memory leak front it was located by a memory of our team (@Libor Ambruz great work!) last week and fixed,  that fixed is currently moving through QA on its way to becoming an update..  You should have it this week.

Thanks again for trusting Avast and for the cross post!

Hi All,

We have released the verified memory leak fix to the public this morning CET.  It is available to all customers and will get pushed automatically to all endpoints if automatic software updates are on on these endpoints.  You can also manually update to insure that the update is delivered immediately.

Thanks for your patience on this.

Hi Luke

Thanks for the heads up on this.

@ 6.23.am C.E.T. +1 here in Malta the program version on my Avast ABS endpoints still show program version 2015.10.0.2503 after manual module updates.

Have your guys incorporated the addition within the existing version or is a newer being pushed through your servers? The reason asked is the ABCCA service now appears stabilized with a 2Mb memory footprint, although the program version shows the same.

All being equal with further stability testing @ our end I will take our endpoint deployment plan to the next level.

Cheers for now

Mike

Hi Luke

Seems to be fixed here too. It would be good though to have some way of knowing that an emergency update (an assumption on my part) had been applied, if the build number isn't going to change.

Hi All,

Glad to hear all is resolved on this front.  We'll think about a better way to update you on what the update is about and also on how to communicate in general.  Our in product messaging mechanisms are rudimentary right now but that will improve over time.

Thanks
