Title: Problem with printing from a specific web site
Post by: microlion on September 24, 2005, 09:49:05 PM
Hi. I am using avast home pro and there is a certain website that I use, but it must be using java or scripts and I can not print from it.. should I post the url here and explain the steps I am using to print so someone could try and see if they get the same results.. It prints fine if I disable avast..

Thanks in advance Dan...

I don't see it being a big problem pasting the URL.

What OS, Browser and firewall are you using?

I am using XP Pro, IE 6 and just the Windows Firewall..

The website works properly with avast on-access protection stopped...

The url is http://www.norwalkfurnitureidea.com/roomplanner.asp

One just double clicks on a sofa and then drag it to the window grid...

Then select the prepare to print menu item along the top menu..

Then another window will open and you should see the sofa if it is working properly and then one should be able to print...

Thanks,
Dan

I've tried scanning that page with Dr. Web and found nothing...
It's strange... why avast! is blocking the printing?
Are your printer shared into Windows Firewall settings?

No...the printer is not shared with Windows Firewall.

What I see happening is that the window that should show the sofa ready for print is being blocked by avast....

Thanks,

Dan

It is working fine here with all providers running.
Looks like the problem is not Avast but something else.
Perhaps your browser. Have you tried another browser (eg: Opera)?

It doesn't work for me because I don't have Java Virtual Machine installed.

Do you have the latest version of JVM?

What other security software do you have installed?
What are you settings in Avast for the protection?
What exact Avast provider is causing this?

The only other security software that I am running with this is Windows.

I don't know what provider is causing this.. Is there an easy way to identify the provider...?

I have just the normal security settings for Avast.... no custom..

Disable the avast providers one at a time and try to print.

It appears to be the Web Shield...

Suggestions for the next step will be greatly appreciated...

Ok.. This is what I have done to allow printing...

I am asking what are the dangers with doing this...?

I went to the Web Shield, under Customize, then to exceptions tab and in the 1. window (Urls to Exclude) I added *.asp.

I can now print...

Again I guess I need to know what the danger is of excluding *.asp...

Thanks....

.asp = active server page, so some script is being executed and in this case Java (Virtual Machine) so it is running something on your system. By excluding all .asp pages a huge amount of internet content could be potentially running scripts that you would know nothing about.

I would tend not to do that but remember it for the future if you ever have this problem temporarily add the *.asp to the url exclusions do the printing, etc. and remove the exclusion.

Opps.. I should have said

"only allow *.asp from this one site"

If you are using this site regularly you could add the full url path of the domain http:// www . sofasogood.com/folder/*.asp (without the spaces) in the exclusions instead of only *.asp I think that should work try it.
