Title: POP emails are being blocked Sending and Receiving
Post by: REDACTED on February 22, 2015, 10:41:14 PM
What would conflict with Avast 2015 so POP emails are blocked?  My IMAP account syncs fine. My ISP is Comcast, when I talked to them, they had me rebuild the account as IMAP like my other account, but this setup didn't work for my Comcast situation, so I went back to POP with it.

Emails will come through after a computer reboot, but after a while (this last time it was a couple of days). When the Mail Shield is turned off, the emails will come through, when I turned it back on, I would get a send/receive error again. I did this a few times to verify it was Avast.

The send error is “The server responded: 421 Cannot connect to SMTP server 2001:558:fe16:1b::16 (2001:558:fe16:1b::16:587), NB connect error 1460',” The receive error says “'Your server does not support the connection encryption type you have specified.”

Any ideas so I don’t have to keep the mail shield turned off?

Install the latest avast version.
Make sure you have imported the certificate to Outlook.

Sorry, that didn't help, thanks for the suggestion though. At first it was looking good, then it stopped working within a day. I still have to disable the mail shield to get it to work

Do you have all (security) updates for the OS and Outlook installed ?
Do you have avast 2015.10.2.2212 installed ?
https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=166883.0
Are you using ssl for the mail ?

I had version 2015.10.0.2208, and updated it to the beta version 2015.10.2.2212

All the updates from Microsoft have been applied

My email provider uses an encrypted connection (SSL)

I turned on the mail shield and since I don't see this behavior right away, I will have to give it some time and see if there is any difference in Outlook

Emails have stopped again, only lasted one day this time. If I reboot or disable the Mail Shield it works, Started Outlook in Safe mode with the same results - I didn't reboot when I did that though. I tried to change my Outlook settings so the server doesn't require and encrypted connection (SSL) and tried the connection type to auto, but that didn't seem to help, and tried to change the encrypted connection type to None from TLS, I changed it back.

I would start my computer in safe mode, but every time I reboot the computer works anyway, its like an ad-in is stopping it, I thought starting Outlook in Save mode would get around that. What settings on the computer could do that? Should I clear my browser, reset it (does it even matter?)

The other thing that it not done regularly is the iPhone is charged by the computer

I suggest to rule out certain things first.
Please follow the instructions, if it doesn't solve things no harm is done:

I have ran the malware scans and have attached their results. When doing so, I had to reboot so I can’t test it at this point to see if things have changed. I ran two different MalwareBytes scans, the first one is without checking for rootkits. Both are showing the same files that should have been deleted the first time I rebooted. I’ll keep you posted as to how this affects the emails

Nice clean log, no apparent reason for the e-mail to fail

Emails have stopped again. Would a Hijackthis or process monitor log help any? I did see one Error entry in the Event log that comes up randomly:

Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 0x485AB6A0B848.  The following error occurred: 0x79. Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.

I'm not sure what's going on here, the computer has not been rebooted but I'm able to send/receive right now? It's be acting right for a few hours now. Do you think I should still do those steps you suggested, or wait till it stops again?

The emails stopped again so I ran the scan you suggested. I have attached the log

If it is intermittent then I would gravitate towards it being an ISP problem

I agree about an ISP issue. I did talk to Comcast, and of course they said it wasn't them. It seems to be back to normal? I have the shield turned on and I'm getting emails like I should! Thanks for all your help

Keep in mind that almost all ISP's "help lines" are just call centers where people are working that only know how to pick up a phone ;)

If the caller mention this, you ask that.
If the caller mention that, you ask this.

Ask them something that they don't have on their list and you will hear...
Uh, oh, uh, moment... I have to ask a colleague about that.

It's back again. There must be something wrong with my computer. I've also ran a disk check and used CCleaner on the registry, still happening. Twice now, this time the second time was within hours. I rebooted a few times, working for now.

Did you try a "repair" in your MS Outlook client program?

Go to File > Account Settings > Repair, for each of your email account(s) and see if that might help.

ADDENDUM: That said, my gut tells me it is your ISP so this may not be of help.  If your sure you've got your incoming and outgoing servers set according to your ISP specifications have you tried unticking "outgoing mail requires authentication" in the chance this might help (typically authentication should be enabled for outgoing mail so I'm assuming this is how you've initially got it set, but by trying there is an outside chance this might help)?

If nothing is helping and you've made sure that all of your email account parameters are set to what they should be according to what is required by your ISP and after trying the "Repair" option in your MS Outlook client program ("File" > "Account Settings" > "Repair" for each account in Outlook) and you still get errors then you could try the following (I'm not sure if this will help but it is a relatively benign application of this utility so it's worth a try):

Open the Microsoft Exchange Server Administrator Utility (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8725)  (click on link for details on this utility).

Click on the “Connections” icon on the left side of the navigational panel for the server you want to administer.

Double click on the “Internet Mail Service” icon on the right side of the panel to open up the “Properties” window.

Again, select the “Connections” tab from the properties window and click on the “Advanced” option.

This will open up a configuration window on your screen.

Now by choosing the “Maximum no. of inbound connections” option, you can set the same to a higher number than what is already available. Keep resetting the numbers higher than the first until you find that the errors are resolved.

At the point errors are resolved then you can close all open Exchange Server Administrator program windows to complete the process.

With the fact in mind that this error your getting is usually due to an improper setting in the account parameters for outgoing mail which is why I've been persistent regarding your making sure you've exhausted all possibilities with your ISP in order to solve this, you could look into possible PST related file corruption (not sure if this issue would actually even cause the error your getting however).

So if after you've made certain beyond any doubt that ALL of your email account parameter settings applied to each separate account are what are required by your ISP (especially outgoing mail) you could look into this: Repair Outlook Data Files (.pst and .ost) (https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Repair-Outlook-Data-Files-pst-and-ost-64842a0a-658a-4324-acc6-ef0a6e3567cd?CorrelationId=8dddc2a6-888f-4b1e-967e-d3015806e374&ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US) as a possible solution.

Optionally you could look into this FREE software that does it all automatically: Repair Outlook PST Files with ScanPST.exe (http://www.pstfilerepairs.com/pst/us-scan/)

Note: I personally continue to suspect an issue exists with your ISP in regards to required settings and I'm not certain the error your getting would even be related to Outlook data file corruption either. More often than not corrupt Outlook data files generally cause Outlook to either crash or not open at all, but considering that if your still getting nowhere with this I'm throwing stuff out there to consider, for what it's worth.
