Title: Computer won't boot after update
Post by: REDACTED on April 03, 2015, 02:18:47 AM
I got a call from a friend who said that they just updated their Windows 7 Home computer's Avast to the current version. Now their computer won't boot to Windows. When the computer boots, they log in and get a black screen.  I'm going there to see if I can fix it for them.  Any suggestions?  Any one else experiencing this issue?

I had something similar..... I got the black screen after logging in... What I could gather is something was preventing, or stalling, explorer.exe from continuing - if you ctrl, alt+del, task manager, kill explorer.exe and run anther explorer.exe, it'll load.

How about getting in to Safe Mode?  Does that work?

I have the same problem with free avast version 6 which was updated into 7 and after restart, windows 7 won't boot. Can you please tell me what to do in details?
I can't get in safe mode, I can't uninstall avast, it gets back into black screen over and over again.

Scroll down to "If you cannot  Boot the computer" and follow the instructions.

You do realize that versions 6 and 7 are really old and not supported anymore ?

I love those instructions - a PC won't boot at all and part of the recommended solution is to use a PC to burn a rescue disc.

It a welcome slap in the face to those who think disc media and the ability to burn and play them are anachronistic and an unnecessary facilities to have on a modern PC. But more importantly it again confirms what I've thought for a long time should be the number one rule for owning a PC: you should not own just one PC.

Most of the things that go wrong with computers can usually be fixed but only if you have or have access to another working PC and the internet.

You think totally wrong.
Unless there is a hardware problem a pc is always bootable.

Next to that, people should create a image of the drive(s) before making changes.

Well, if they can post here, they have access to a working system. ;)

You can post here from a phone or tablet but most (if not all) of them do not burn discs of any kind.  But isn't this a little off the main topic?

Agreed, back to topic.
