I've made some changes.

Bob i registered but when i want to login i just get: "Your account is currently not active!" hmmm do i have to wait for some sort of confirmation email or something like that?

Unfortunately there's nothing to logon to...He(Bob) switched back to his old server(until he sorts things out with the new one probably) so you can still download all you want from his shared files it's just that this "old" server doesn't have a forum you see?

It's a Winamp problem. :'( :'( For some reason it's not able to handle the sign-in requirement.
It works great in WMP (Windows Media Player) and JetAudio which I use and which is available for download on (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v190/bob3160/MySharedFiles.jpg) (http://home.comcast.net/~bob03160/401Html.html).

I've made the adjustments and answered the reply in the WinampForum (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=228624).
It should now work regardless of which program plays your m3u play list. :)

After some serious debating with myself, and the advice of some others, I've come to the conclusion
that the DVD copying software offered here (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=22309.msg185291#msg185291), isn't something I should make available on MySharedFiles (http://mysharedfiles.no-ip.org/).
Since I don't need the authorities knocking on my door for offering something that's not legal
as our current statutes are written, it's safer to err on the side of caution.
I've therefore removed it from that server.

I have been looking at your lovely pictures, and thank you for being so generous. ;D
Can you tell me why it takes so long to download some of your files. I am on broadband at 4MB speed, but I often get disconnected when I try to download something large, and even when I don't get stopped the speed is slow (around 15 KBPS)in comparison to other downloads that I have tried in the past. I am using Freshdownload as my download manager, and I know that you mentioned another manager at your website.

My ISP although extremely fast when it comes to downloads,
isn't that quick when it comes to uploads.
As already mentioned, these files come directly from my computer,
what you get from me is the upload side (slow side) of my bandwidth.
Since MySharedFiles (http://home.comcast.net/~mysharedfiles) currently contains in excess of 12.5 Gig in data, (and growing daily)
hosting it from my computer is the only cost effective way.
If you would like to contact Comcast Cable, and ask them to increase
my bandwidth for free, I would greatly appreciated it even though I know
that's not likely to happen. ;D

I thought it might have something to do with my machine. I also have fast download speed and very slow upload speeds. You would think for the price they would make things equal.
I still appreciate getting all those nice files.
I did notice that I could not resume using Freshdownload; therefore, if I was disconnected I had to start all over again. Is this true also with Gigaget?

Resume can only happen when the server/PC you are downloading from permits it and is set-up to do so. Somehow I doubt Bob's PC is set-up or capable of doing that. This may be further complicated because it is going through an intermediary no-ip.org.

Resume work without any problems.
GigaGet also works well with the no-ip.org address.

no-ip.org has no bearing at all. It's used only to bypass the
occasional changes in the routing#. It gives me the ability to make
changes in one place and yet leave the address every one uses the same.

I downloaded and installed Gigaget, and after figuring out how to use it in place of FreshDownload, find that it is a least twice as fast for your files. That makes a big difference.

This proves that not all free programs are of equal value.
In my personal experience, Gigaget has outperformed every other download manager I've tried.
(By the way, I've tried quite a few including many of the paid versions)

It works fine in all the browsers.
Unless you happened to go there when I'm off-line then it will not display

But I'd like more Startup Delayer (http://www.r2.com.au/software.php?page=2&show=startdelay). This freeware controls the windows startup (Windows 98\Me\2k\XP\Vista) that does not follow a strict order.

The image you posted is at the bottom of the page and is an ad for no-ip.com, I get that too, but I also get the page in the image Bob posted. However when I use firefox I also get a weird failed Authentication Header (see image), I don't get this if I connect with Avant browser.

There isn't any sign-in required. (Unless you tried a function your not authorized to use... ;D)

the message at the bottom refers to no-ip web referral service.
I'm using their free version. To make that message go away, requires MONEY :)

Unfortunately I can't help you Tech.
I can only reach the website when I'm at some one elses computer.
While at home, I get a message stating:
"The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading"
Needless to say it's a frustrating as hell.... :'(
I do however know that the server is still being accessed by lots of people. :)
Comcast swears that they have nothing to do with my problems.....

I have tried several times, even with JAVA enabled, 71.228.110.197 allowed, the JAVA applet fails (option 1 the ManzanoMountainsInWinter.html link) locking up firefox even if I delete the page, It still says Loading Java Applet Failed... in the status bar of the browser window in the next active Tab.
Even when I closed Firefox, the process was still there in XP Task Manager and had to be killed.
So I have no Idea what is going on here as I haven't had this kind of problem before.

The home.comcast.net/~mlra/ManzanoMountainsInWinter.html link worked for me with comcast allowed, apart from it taking a very long time to load on dial-up.
We are meant to be in the winter months and over the last few days it has got down to -3c on some nights and the Pond is frozen over, it is a tough life for the moorhens but they get well fed.

There is nothing wrong with the products listed. I want to make that clear to those reading this. It is only the included images from a certain site that are not good.

I finally figured out why I couldn't access MySharedFiles (http://mysharedfiles.no-ip.org/).
I have anti bruteforce protection installed and in testing, i apparently acceded my own limitations.
Simply put, the protection automatically banned my IP address. :'(
Once I realized and fixed this problem, I was again able to visit MySharedFiles (http://mysharedfiles.no-ip.org/). :)

Yep ... zdnet is known to use hidden images/objects on their site. But, that's ok because the cure (AdFree) blocked those hidden items and to me, that is not worse than the desease (hidden images/objects).

It's not just blocking the pictures (arrows in this case) but the URL they are coming from.

I've been using Ashampoo's Burning Studio Product for a long time. I find it extreamly easy to use and it's a lot
less system intensive than Nero.
I don't use or recommend their Firewall Product. (It's ability to protect your system doesn't have a very high rating.)
I use PC Tools Firewall Pro (http://www.download.com/PC-Tools-Firewall-Plus-Free-Edition/3000-10435_4-10625321.html) on both my XP 2 computers and my Vista system.

It required a few scans and fixes for it to totally finish cleaning up a real mess.
(I did have a restore point ready prior to running this program - just in case)

Only one part (fragment, thread) can be downloaded, no resume offered...
It will take 80+ hours to download if *nothing* cuts the connection...

For me the best speed from Bob's site would produce a download of about 50Kb per second.
That is about 8x what could be achieved on a dialup site and was just about the upload limit I had on my cable service a year or so ago before I paid for the highest domestic tier.
Nevertheless, rather like the experience of Joe S this is pointing to an uninterrupted download time of 13-14 hours, but is nowhere near a suggested 80+ hour concern. I must also say that I am relatively close (only geographically) to Bob.

No, it's not this. I'm not worried about networking, volume control or time display icons. The problem is the opened programs that were "lost" when explorer crashes (eventually). You need to boot (or logoff/logon) to get them back.

I have an on going problem with explorer freezing and I have to use task manager to kill the process, obviously this kills all the system tray icons too. In XP's task manager I can go to the Applications tab (different in Vista) and click the new task button. I enter explorer.exe, that starts explorer again and I get the taskbar and the icons back.
So you could try that and see if it works (as when this happens to me my mouse clicks don't work), you may need to use Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up the Task Manager.

I don't know either, but essentially some are directly related/integrated with explorer and breaking that link causes them to fail also. I have to restart my mouse software to get that icon back, but what it does is up to a point save you having to reboot there and then. You can always restart those programs were their icon doesn't reappear.

What do you use any virtual computer for??
I use it for testing because it doesn't involve my actual system.
Once I close the Virtual machine, anything I used on it is gone.
However, I can store lot's of files there and access the files directly in the virtual computer.
I'm still playing with it. :)

FF has no trouble though.
Anyway...I don't really like url shorteners...I like to see the URL i'm clicking.
Virl does it wierd though, adds the page in a frame as oppsed to redirecting...(good or bad? I'm not sure...)

the online viewer is the first link you get when googled for postscript viewer. the quality of output is not so good. also i need to take print outs. the options on the left hand side is not needed.

As to your question, I use Irfanview (iview) but in order for it to view the formats you requested,
you'll also need to install GhostScript.
To extend Irfanview even further I would also recommend their Plugin package.

i have all the softwares you have recommended bob. i have multiple pages in the file but irfan view shows only one page. i did use gsview but it seems that it cuts the fonts at the top a bit when i try to print. i have printed as pdf. i've posted the screenshot. take a look

You can use CorelDraw if you can get your hands on the application. I still use version 10, but you can download a more recent trial version.
In CorelDraw: open a new page, and Import the file selecting the "As Text" option.
The file loads (60 pages in all). Initially the text on each page is grouped, but can be ungrouped for editing. You can then select File > Publish as PDF, or print directly from within CorelDraw.
One thing i noticed, though... in some places (very few), the text is mangled (overlapping), and will need some intervention.
Let me know if getting access to CorelDraw is a problem, and i will be happy to oblige with the pdf.
Only, some of the corrections may need a 'technical' bent of mind. ;)

Out of interest, yes I did, just got distracted and forgot to post. (was going to...)
It works pretty well, although i had to jump through a few hoops to get it to work properly in firefox...(and NoScript)
I don't know about how well the translations are done, can only really understand english...
Overall, a nice addition to your ever more popular blog, well done :)

If you are blocking Proxy/Anonymizers this would be why the domain is
blocked. Google translate actually works as a proxy. If you wish to
allow it on your network you can add translate.google.com to the
Always Allow list on the settings page in your account.
After following their directions and adding translate.google.com to the Alway Allow list,
the blocking stopped.

MySharedFiles (http://mysharedfiles.no-ip.org/) has just been moved from my main System (Running Windows XP) to another system
which has been changed over to Windows 7.
Outside of re-installing the program itself and registering it, the process was fairly simple. The program itself and all the files that are available for sharing are
located on an USB External 120 Gid HD. ( It will soon be time to move things to a larger HD) :)
I'll now have time to work on the XP system and convert it over to Windows 7 without interrupting MySharedFiles (http://mysharedfiles.no-ip.org/).
I already know that converting that computer over will be a royal pain.

Keep in mind that this service is not used to gather info but simply a way of making some free software
available to any one who wants it.
I originally started this to allow a few friends and my relatives to download freeware I had accumulated on my system.
Now, any one can get a few more files. :)
I've also noticed that in order to use the website you mentioned to gather statistics, I would have to own the domain.
My websites are all on websites made available as either a part of the program I use or free ones like Google or the ones made available
through my ISP.

Your welcome. Keep one thing in mind, MySharedFiles resides on my computer. (A 500 Gig External USB Drive)
If I need to reboot my system for any reason, there can be a time that MySharedFiles isn't available.
That same situation would happen if my ISP goes down which thankfully hardly ever happens. :)

Lupo has made a habit of doing this. Check out JkDefrag PLUS on his site. You'd never know that he took Travis's JkDefrag Portable launcher from PortableApps.com and changed the name of it to his "JkDefrag PLUS". Nowhere on his page does he mention that. It just looks like his own app.

The developer link links to the original JkDefrag page. The launcher links to him. No mention of Travis or PortableApps.com. Oh, he does link to the JkDefrag source code hosted on our SourceForge page rather than hosting it himself as he's supposed to, though.
You'll notice this with several of his "PLUS" apps. They're just taken from here or WinPenPack or Framakey and have their/our splash hidden and no mention of us on his site. Some of them do link to us with a "Launcher" link, but there's no actual mention of us or anywhere else he takes the work from on the app's page. And he's doing Firefox, Thunderbird and others in violation of the trademark license.
If I understand right, many apps aren't legal...

That looks promising, simple fixes for a few things. I wonder if this will be effective against some of the things that malware does...like the 'fix Task Manager' and 'reset internet connection'.
I also wonder how well it will deal with the security center not recognising antiviruses...could prove easier than resetting the repositiory...

Yahoo 10 will only work in Vista for admins not standard users!
When I contacted Yahoo
They told me that it is a security feature of Yahoo 10 >:(
But I don't know the use of this :-X
Why did Yahoo discontinue this version? I don't know

If it is true (which I seriously hope is incorrect, given that the posts you linked to are two years old) that you need to be an admin just to use it I wouldn't install it at all. Messenger accounts are the target for malware and simply put running as and admin account leaves you open for more serious problems as it inherits that permission level.

I have switched on UAC in my Vista to prevent my brother from installing or running any other programs than I have installed
I am the admin and he has got a standard user a/c
I tried installing Yahoo Messenger but only I can run it after install but my brother can't
Whenever he clicks on the Yahoo Messenger icon, it never starts
Windows Live messenger don't have this problem even if UAC is switched on.
Why don't you try switching on the UAC and run your Yahoo on a standard user?
Then you'll find that what I am saying is correct

Because I don't have a vista (or 7) machine to test it on. It's fine if you're right, and I don't mind being wrong. But that's just retarded if the program can't even run (it's just an IM program for cryin' out loud!) without running under an admin account.
Oh well, you're an admin so you can run it.
I guess you could always right-click and run as admin if you're ever logged in as a standard user.

Bob, EasyBCD has a beta version that allows Windows 7 booting from an ISO, i.e., add an entry on Windows boot manager to boot from an ISO, like MetTest+, Linux and rescue CDs etc.
I'm still exploring the capabilities and seems promising. Until now, no problems so far.

I have only recently realised how useful Teamviewer is...very good for those who need help and are not exactly close...and it is now a PortableApp.

All this bull revolves around a file called "CrowningOfPresidentBaracObama.exe"
The file itself doesn't exist on my server. What I do have are two files.
One is named "CrowningOfPresidentBaracObama.swf" and,
the other one is named "CrowningOfPresidentBaracObama.html"
The file itself contains pictures I took during the inauguration of our president.
The pictures where shot of the ceremony as presented by CNN news and taken directly from my TV.
I subsequently turned those pictures into a flash (swf) presentation and called it "CrowningOfPresidentBaracObama".
End of story. One of theses days, WOT might get their facts straight. Till then, I'll have to keep explaining their ineptitude. :'(

Well, you could use Stardock's Objectdock, and it has the ability to hide the windows taskbar as well. I've been using it for years and seems to work quite well. The weather app is a little flaky, but other than that it's good.

To each his own sir! (I like to keep the taskbar area clear to have room for open programs, and I have the dock hidden away with all my "commonly used" programs for quick access. Such as cmd prompt, notepad, word, outlook, 3 browsers, file sharing programs, messengers, remote desktop, media player, A/V and Malware, etc) all separated out in different groups to keep it organized.
Really though Tech, you should try it out. The free version is quite nice, just dig through the configuration options, there really is a lot you can do with it. You can position it anywhere, hide it off-screen when not in use, change the font, change the icons, and the paid version has even more (I've never used the paid version though, the free version gives me what I need).

Sorry for the late post but I noticed a program that promisses to speed up the PC (360Amigo System Speedup).
Has any one tried this. I'm curious because I think Vista could stand to be a bit faster on my laptop but I'm not sufficiently currious to take a risk. So any reasurence is welcomed. ::)

Myne as well stays pluged in as much as possible but sometimes I have to use it without the cord. In those casses it's annoying to keep moving the mouse over the battery icon to see how much energy is left. Plus percentage is hard to read when dealling with time. So this tool is great. Thus far it seems OK... the only thing is that the value for the full life of the batery keeps going up and down. I'll give it more time. Great tool for Windows running on laptop. Thanks.

If you guys run your computer with the power plugged in all the time, I suggest removing the battery from the computer while you're using it.
I've found that batteries will last a lot longer if they're not in the system while in use (plugged in of course).
Li-Ion is the opposite though. It likes to be charged as often as possible.
