Title: Cannot install Avast at all D:
Post by: REDACTED on April 10, 2015, 02:31:56 AM
Now first off; yes I've tried a lot of the obvious solutions, but I can't get it to work. I am not exactly computer savy so please don't be afraid to point out something I might have missed.

Anywho; I downloaded and installed Avast anti-virus - but when I click to install the program (either as regular or admin) I get a small grey box with ;
The stub cannot run installer/updater executable
'C:\Users\Myusername\AppData\Local\Temp\_av_iup.tm~a11244\instup.exe'
(code 0x2)

Sorry if I have missed something obvious, or missed the soloution. Thanks for any help :)

Oups sorry;

Tried both the free version and Pro (free trial version)
The newest? (2015)
Running windows 8.1
64bit
(Sp? )
I used to use Northon, but it have been expired for a few months - but I have not touched it or tried to uninstall as I will move back to it if I can't get Avast to work soon.

You will need to remove Norton before trying to install avast.

Ditto. You'll need to remove Norton before installing Avast. Running multiple AV's at  the same time causes problems. They usually butt heads.

When you uninstall Norton via add/remove. Run the Norton removal tool in safe mode. Removal tool is located here https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/kb20080710133834EN_EndUserProfile_en_us;jsessionid=156C390934E195AE242EC77552E1DE7E.4?abproduct=home&abversion=1&pvid=f-home

Follow the instruction from the removal tool. After that uninstall avast via add/remove and reboot. After that download avast uninstall utility and double click on it. It will ask you that if you want this tool to automatically run your computer in safe mode. click yes both times and follow the instructions.

After that download and install a fresh new copy of avast free (custom installation) Note: Make sure you uncheck any optional program that is offered i.e. google dropbox and etc. Custom installation allows you to install what feature(s) you want to install. Once the installation is done it will do a quick start up scan. After that reboot your computer manually and register your copy of avast. Registration is free and registration is required once every year.

So I've done what you guys. Completely wiped Norton off, and also avast - restarted a few times during the process + another time just for good measure. The re-downloaded Avast pro. (the same error is with the free version anyways).  I also purged any old user data or logs attached to Norton so the small traces wouldn't be left.

Same error. Also I was told to uninstall avast - which is kinda against my point here, as I can't install it at all. The second I click the setup for avast that is downloaded through the official website I get the error message.  :/ (but yes I purged that too earlier)

To rule out an infection: Attach your basic logs. (MBAM, FRST and aswMBR..!!)

Even if a installation fails, there are almost always traces of the software on your system.
It doesn't matter if it is avast or other software.

Please do as Asyn asked and lets see if we can find something.

More to the point, Norton has been expired for a 'few months', so it is likely you did not have antivirus protection during that time.

A certified malware removal expert will be contacted for you once you attach your logs using the link Asyn provided.
