Title: SpyBot updates
Post by: Lisandro on November 10, 2003, 09:36:06 PM
In previous foruns, I have read that SpyBot have some difficulties while updating (I remember that Waldo posted something about it..., specially about the mirrors). Now, everytime I try to update I receive the same message: No updates available.
My Internet connection is working fine (with avast!, e-mail, firewall, proxy and so on...).

This is the Spybot log:
6-11-03 18:46:33 downloaded update Detection rules
6-11-03 18:46:33  - URL: http://spybot.eon.net.au/updates/files/includes.zip

The last update was in 6-11, is this ok? At Spybot webpage is not so simple to know if this is the 'last' update...  :'(

Technical,

My XP shows the last update as 5/18/03 and version 1.2
Your Spybot seems to be more current than mine!
I just checked and it says that there are no updates.

Um....very strange indeed.

I want to go to the Home page for Spybot and nose around a bit to see if I can come up with any answers.  I have noticed that the updates are not very frequent and each of my machines updates differently. (in time that is).

UPDATE:  Try this link for the latest update definitions.

This site seems to be pretty good at keeping track of the latest updates: http://www.computercops.biz/forum44.html

It shows the latest SpyBot update as being 02 Nov.
You may be interested in other forums and security related articles on this site too.

So far I haven't had any problems with SpyBot updates.

Thanks Jarron and Techie for the links.

Anyway, Techie, I'm looking for an incremental update and your link, as you know, is for full update. Jarron, that links jump to a forum list and the user need to browse and search a little... There I found that last spybot update (http://www.computercops.biz/postitle6399-0-0-.html) is 10-10-2003 !

I'll keep reporting and wainting for your posts about Spybot updates. Thanks for your time again.  ;)

Yes Technical, I knew it was a full update, but I wanted to at least have your program updated to the latest.  We can still work on the incremental update problem.

I'm shooting off an email to Spybot support tonight.

Sorry Technical, I should have posted the actual thread: http://www.computercops.biz/postt7094.html.  You must have missed it while scanning through the list.  I look at the list fairly regularly so it's easier for me to spot the newer items.

I have a similar problem with updating SpyBot 1.2, If Avast is running, i cant, simple as that, the downloads appear, but when i click download, it hangs the whole PC, if Avast is disabled or i use another A/V, then i can get them no probs

Now i know for a fact that it all worked before, but since version 4.1 (the most bug ridden in my opinion)ie progs will hang if Avast is running like Opera, Anti Trojan, & even IE6 the few rare times i use it all freeze if Avast is running, it got so bad with all versions of 4.1, that ui have switched to NODv2 as my main A/V with Avast as a back up, just to make clear these probs were only with Avast running, with it disabled or with NOD running, i have no probs at all

It is a pity as Avast was a great prog & i recommended it to all my family & friends, sadly even they are having probs with it now.I seriously hope the Awill team can fix these bugs & get Avast back as the best A/V, untill they do, i'll stick with NOD

My descision was also based on the fact that only Igor from the Avast team was kind enough to try & help me with other members of this forum with my "Avast Is Locking The PC" thread, i got the feeling that Vlk & the others just didnt care, so my thanks goes to Igor & techie101 & Homer for all their help with my problem.

BanziBaby, I just try to help when I feel I can do... avast! forums members, like any other, try to help very fast, kindly and efficently... Sometimes, for me, I cannot figure out how to help hardware troubles or memory leaks. Maybe I did not have these troubles so I did not learn...

Anyway, I'm an avast! user deeply thankfull to Vlk. He always help me when I need  8)

About this thread, I recommend to Spybot users the Spybot Side Bar (http://www.safer-networking.org/files/spybotsd.sidebar.zip). Here is the link for Internet Explorer. The user can see the last updates by clicking Tool > SpyBot on the main menu of IE. By now, the last update is indeed 2nd November.  ;)

BanziBaby: If I remember correctly, you said you had the "Show detailed info" turned on. Does the freezing occurs even when you switch it off? Or when you disable some of the Standard Shield options... or the Standard Shield completely?

If the freeze occurs every time you try to download the SpyBot update (i.e. if it's easily reproducible)... it's quite an advantageous situation for experiments that may pinpoint the problem. Of course it's bad that it freezes... but it's sort of "better" than random, non-reproducible crashes/freezes - from the point of view of solving it.

BanziBaby, if you want more information about the avast4.ini file, you can see here (http://www.avast.com/forum/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=1647)

For instance, there are some topics about what Igor said: "Show detailed info" and so on.

Best regards.  ;)

Hi :)

@Igor, i dont have show detailed info on for any of the providers, only the internet mail scanner, as i liked to see a confirmation that mail was being scanned. The freezes with spybot always happened at the same point, ie, click the search for updates button, wait till any updates were listed & then as soon as i clicked on the download updates, it locked, always with Avast running, tried the 3 finger salute (ctrl+alt+del)but as soon as U click on end task, again the pc froze, this time for good, left it for over an hour, but it just locked up completely so a reset was needed.I even tried the beta version of SpyBot 1.3, same again, but with Avst running, the download actually makes it to the dialog box showing that it is connecting to the server, but the blue progress bar always appears full, but nothing gets downloaded, disable Avast & it works & downloads the updates. All the freezes with the other programs i mentioned, happened as Avast was doing some scanning, i had the taskbar on show all the time & as soon as the A ball icon started to spin, things would freeze, again if i ctrl+alt+del, it locked completely neddeing a reset. On open scan had the default extention set that Vlk had posted a while back & on create modify, it just had default extention set checked, no detailed info was selected nor silent mode.

My pc configureation hasnt changed in all the time i have used Avast, no new hardware or drivers, i always use nvidia drivers version 30.82 as they are stable & dont have the performance drop that later versions do on win9x, my strrtup items have also been the same as i always use the same progs.I have tried everythin that was suggested on this forum & even a few things of my own, only way to stop the lockups is to completely disable the standard shield provider which totally defeats the point of having it.I didnt mean to sound as harsh on Avst & its team as i did, just having so many personal probs coupled with all the probs in trying to use my pc with Avast running, if i use msconfig to disable it completely, the probs stop, proving to me that it is down to Avast. With version 4 of Avast, i rarely had any complaints or probs, unfortunately i can say the same with 4.1 & the constant updates & fixes for it.Even on a freshly formatted drive with my custom install of windows (nothin fancy, just selecting custom install as i have always done & not installing any of the useless stuff i dont & never use)with or without windows updates, not using certain providers, ie IM, P2P & even the mail scanner, it still happens.I have tried uninstalling Avast usin control panel & then the Avast4 removal tool, then reinstalling, straight after reboot, the problems start.Im sure U can all inderstand that it is hard to use a pc when it locks up whenever U run a prog or Avast scans something.I just cant put up with the constant runs of scandisk after every reset anymore, so i disabled Avast & got the trail version of NODv2, not 1 single prob with that, no lock ups, no freezes, nothing, it all just works, so much so that i actually bought it.

I will still be keeping Avast on the pc, just without it loading at startup & when i use it, NOD will be completely disabled, then i will start the ashserv process & update its vps, then just use it with no providers as a on demands scanner, i will still update the prog & try it out sometimes to see if all these probs are gone, if not, well there not much else i can do. ???

@technical, thank U for the link to the ini configuration, the only thing i have ever edited in that is the "UseDefaultSMTP=" option as changing it to a 1 was the omnly way i could send mail in OE, never had any probs setting mozillamail or other mail progs as they dont really have a use smtp authorisation option.Keep Ur good work here friend, U are a credit too this forum & U have always tried to help others, long may U continue in that :)

Cheers :)

I had SpyBot updates troubles either. But in the web I found that these troubles are not related to avast! The SpyBot application does not have a good update feature anyway... This is the reason for me to start this theread (forum).

I know that the SpyBot files could be updated like this:

Detection rules (http://spybot.eon.net.au/updates/files/includes.zip)
Integrated tools (http://spybot.eon.net.au/updates/files/tools.zip) Application updater (http://spybot.eon.net.au/updates/files/updater.zip)
Update dummies (http://spybot.eon.net.au/updates/files/dummies.zip)

I know this can help just a little, anyway I decided to post... I won´t give up avast! to SpyBot updates (anyway, SpyBot works perfectly, just the update proccess is a little complicated).

In the web troubles with it always said the same behavior: update (download) freezed, monitor troubles, etc.  :'( I do not think it is an avast! problem...  ;)

Spybot has a "/autoupdate" command line switch.  Try that.

Spybot has a "/autoupdate" command line switch.  Try that.

I tried but the application just 'stay' there...
Nothing occurs, only open in the Online page and stays there (in status bar is written: Program started), does not perform an automatic update for me  :'(

The application called 'Update' in the Spybot folder do nothing too (just say 'No updates available'). I tryed all mirrors available, just the answer: 'No newer updates available'.

I tried the update tool into IE (spybot sidebar) and nothing...  :'(

If there is a version of 13th November like scandisk said, everything is wrong to me  :P

Ok MacLover, but incremental updates are quite better than full ones.
Ad-aware from Lavasoft updates without trouble. Spybot updates are making me crazy. Nobody knows exactly what is happening  :'(

Tried to update Spybot this morning.....Still says No newer updates!

Spybot support has not answered an email I sent them 2 weeks ago.

I guess we are on our own with this one.

Has anyone tried an uninstall and clean install yet????

Here is more info on the matter:

Spybot uses local port 80 to contact Kolla.de at 212.227.118.106
If this port is in use or blocked by other spyware apps like Spybot (uses port 80 to monitor traffic), then the incremental update will not work.

However, I shut down all my anti- this and that but still no updates.
BUT....the message changed from No newer updates to Error downloading update file.

There seems to be some connection here.
I did notice that my traffic log showed a remote attempt to connect from 212.227.118.106 using port 1174.
Since I did not realize it was Kolla, I did not allow it.  It has not attempted since.

I am getting the distinct impression that the error lies with Kolla or the updated Spybot.

The battle continues.  >:(

Technical,

I don't know if this applies to your situation, but I thought I throw my 42 cents worth in.   ;)

I too had noticed that SB S&D had not found any updates in quite some time.  I thought it strange since I'd heard about a few new threats that I felt certain would be promptly addressed.  I had used the program to check for updates numerous times over the course of a month or so, but it always indicated that none were available.

After reading this thread Wednesday, I tried again to get SB S&D to update itself, but it reported that no new updates were available.  I checked the web site and discovered that 2 or 3 updates had been released since the last one I'd obtained.  I also checked some other resources and discovered other complaints, with overloaded servers being blamed most of the time.   I tried to get them repeatedly, from each of the mirrors, without success over the next serveral hours.

Then I had my idea for the week.  I log on to my system, which runs Windows XP Home Edition, using a limited account about 90% of the time.  About the only time I use an adminstrator account is when I want to check for and install Windows updates, install software, or update existing programs.

Last night I decided to try to get the updates while logged on under an administrator account.  I started SB S&D and had it check for updates.  This time it quickly found, downloaded, and installed them without a hiccup.  In the past I know I've checked for updates as a restricted user, with the intention of making a mental note to download and install them later as an administrator.  I can't say for sure, but at this point I'm willing to believe that SB S&D has never found any updates when I wasn't logged on with administrative rights.

Regards,
Hornus

Thanks Hornus, but like MacLover, I use my XP system as an administrator and SpyBot continues to fail in update  :'( As techie said, the battle continues  ::) Fortunatelly, we can use ad-aware from Lavasoft  ;D

2003-11-02 still seems the last update  :'(

Ok..I am making some progress but still can't get the updates.

I uninstalled the silly thing completely including registry keys, then did a clean install.

Now, Spybot "detects" the updates but is unsuccessful in downloading them.

I see that it starts the download of updates, but when it starts to download the file check library, it fails.

Make any sense to any of you???

If I don't get this thing to update, I'll junk it and switch over to SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaster.
There goes more system resources,  but at least those programs update.  (At least in my ME machine)

Oh by the way, I am the only user on my machine, so I don't think the Administrator thing had much to do with it.
Sorry Hornus.  I wish you were right.  ;)

So do I my friend, for your sake and others.  I'd hate to see you give up SB S&D, especially its new Immunize features.

Hornus,

I hope you can find something.  I am at wits end.  I have spent the last hour and a half trying just about everything I could think of.

Here is something that might help.  I ALSO have a problem with Adaware 6.181
It tells me that there are no newer updates.  Sound familiar!

I was able to download the updates and manually put them in, but it too has an auto-update bug.

I tried the following:
Spybot:  In settings, checked Use Proxy and entered 127.0.0.1 8080
No good.
then tried entering the urls for security.kolla.de and studserver.dortmund.de
No good.

Ok..switched over to Adaware and found a proxy box there also.
Set in 127.0.0.1 and it did seem to do an update.  However, I already updated it so it showed the same number.
I will have to keep an eye on this program.

Has anyone else had trouble with Adaware??

Thanks for trying.  I really would hate to give up Spybot, but I can't manually update it either unless I'm doing it wrong.  The update files are supposed to be self installing.  Right?  All I did was click on them, and they unpacked, but Spybot did not show any newer date.

I'm confused.  Later.

New update today (actually yesterday, considering where most people are) 24 Nov 03.

Once again SB S&D detected and downloaded with no problems.

I'm getting worried.  Everyone else is having a problem except for me.  It never happens that way, something's seriously wrong.

Jarron

P.S.  I have no idea what's going on, but if someone has an idea of what I could look for on my computer that might be different from the others I'll be glad to help (as long as it's something a relatively unknowledgable person can do).  I'm using 98SE.  I assume I'm the Administrator as I'm the only one who ever uses it (this statement should give you an idea of the extent of my knowledge).

I just tried to update SB S&D, and it reported no new updates are available.  I then asked to to show me the log, which indicated that the .ini file had been downloaded, but the file's timestamp remained unchanged.  A check of the website shows that indeed one is available.

The mystery continues.

I haven't gotten to searching the Internet for more information because I have several fires in the iron right now.

(At least in my ME machine)

techie

Oh by the way, I am the only user on my machine, so I don't think the Administrator thing had much to do with it.
Sorry Hornus.  I wish you were right.  ;)

Rereading Techie's post I remembered that sometime in the past I did have a problem downloading an update after it detected it, I believe it was a program version update.  I switched to another mirror (FXClips(USA)) and it downloaded fine.  Since then I always automatically select that mirror.

I'll retract my statement that I never had problems with an update.  Please consider it faulty memory and not dishonesty.  I don't recall ever having a problem with it detecting updates anyway, and no problems downloading after that, not to the best of my recollection anyway (or did I already say that?  I can't remember).

OK Folks,

I did a Fast User Switch to an administrator account, started SB S&D, and had it check for updates.  It found one available, but it hung during the attempt.  Task Manager reported that two copies of the copies of the application were running and both were not responding.  I regret not having the forsight to check if there were two processes running, one for each active user account.  I suspect it, but don't know it.  I believe that if I had logged off the limited account first, that the download would have succeeded.

Definitevely, there is an update of 24th November 2003.
Detection rules, 650 k. The download take a little longer and the computer 'seems' to freeze or stop. Wait! Wait for the download and do not browse so much during it.

The technical information is: Legend: ++ means a new addition,
+ means a target detection has improved

Hornus,

The 2 apps running at the same time rang a bell.  I did notice that on my machine also.  I will have to try shutting down one of them before proceeding with the update.

Good job!

Technical,

Your posts are now longer than Hornus'.  I guess it's a Posting-virus.

Well, I have given up on Spybot.  Spybot support is non-existant, and I have to say, our Avast forum is the best I have ever been involved with.

The Spybot forum seems to have more questions than answers.

I have chosen to remove Spybot.  I have installed SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard as a combo which seems to be working rather nicely.
I still have Spyblocker (which I really like) running resident.  SB, SG and Spyblocker all play nicely together.  AND THEY ALL UPDATE FINE!!!

As for Adaware.  Adaware 6.0 will not update unless it is upgraded to build 181.  I only found out about this yesterday.  That was my update problem with Adaware.  I downloaded build 181 but never installed it.
Since I thought I did, it never dawned on me that it was the cause of the update problem.
Getting old I guess.

Techie, believe in Spybot Sidebar (http://www.safer-networking.org/files/spybotsd.sidebar.zip). It can be accessed from Tools Menu of IE and tell you the last update for spybot.

I have some difficult to scan a partition with ad-aware from Lavasoft. The partition has a second Windows XP installation (not the one I use right now). The program freezes. In other partitions, everything works fine. Spybot does not freeze on scanning that partition (E:\).

Technical,

I have no problem believing what the update should be.
I have a major problem getting the update to work in Spybot.
My last attempts noticed that there were NO mirrors listed!

Every day, a new problem which re-installing did not help.

I have Adaware set to scan just about every conceivable file configuration in my XP and it works fine.  As a matter of fact, the new build 181 really zips along!

I found Spybot to unstable for me.

Thanks for the comments.

sorry to hear that spybot is a great program. Just how fast is adware?
my gateway laptop has 12.7 GB of files

Mac,

Truthfully, I could not estimate the scanning time for 12 gig of files, but I did notice a considerable increase in scanning with the newer version which was a problem with older builds.

What I did was set it to scan late at night when I was through puttering.  It was done when I got up.

Try it.  It is greatly improved.

I came upon this post on the Spybot forum of which I am a bit skeptical :

http://www.net-integration.net/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?s=89becbcadd4990ac60a2d58c7e98b60f;act=ST;f=28;t=5033 (http://www.net-integration.net/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?s=89becbcadd4990ac60a2d58c7e98b60f;act=ST;f=28;t=5033)

I did try other mirrors and waited....and waited.....
no updates!
I did however get the !!! appearing in the Spybot download panel updates information.

Maybe when the get their server mess fixed, I'll give it another try in my XP system.

It still functions ok in my W98 system, so I guess it is only a half a loss.  hahaha

I'm with you, but not completely.  I did notice that the dates on the thread were from August.  This may be an indication of an ongoing problem with servers being unable to handle the load.  I did succeed in getting SB S&D to update a few minutes ago, though it was through no effort of my own.  Since SB S & D reports no new updates are available only for some but not for others, especially since it behaved both ways for me, ruling out differences in system configurations, I'm willing to consider that it may just be a server issue combined with poor error detection and/or reporting on the program's part.

Referring to my previous post about updating with limited vs. administrator accounts, logged on as a restricted user I told the program to check for updates, and it did find an update for detections available.  Remembering Jarron's post, I selected another server (changed from Unido in Europe to FXClips in the USA) and initiated the download, which failed.  An error message was displayed in what appearred to be German.  I guessed that it was telling me that access was denied to downloads.ini.  I remembered at this point that this always happened in the past when I tried to update when running under a limited account.  Checking the update directory for timestamps and my access rights to the directory, I saw that this was the case.

After giving my account the proper permission to access the file, I restarted the download without an error notification; however, SB S & D was still reporting the that it was using an older update.  Checking again, I saw that the timestamp on includes.zip was unchanged.  I changed the permissions and restarted the download.  It appeared to work this time, with a new archive file present and SB S & D reporting that it was using the new updates.

I wasn't satisfied with success, however.  I opened the Zip file and looked at the contents.  Comparing the timestamps of the archived files with those of the corresponding files in the Includes directory, I saw that they hadn't been updated.  Again I modified the permissions, but when I tried to reinitiate an update, of course SB S & D reported that no new updates are available.  Doh!

Checking the timestamp on the archive files instead of checking those on the individual files is causing me some grief, but it's my own fault.  It is a nice shortcut though, clever and efficient, and of course the developers didn't count on some smart ass circumventing the standard update procedure.  I guess I can just extract the files to the Includes directory, but I'm holding off on that for the moment to think it through.  I'm also going to give the user account the correct permissions for the program's entire directory tree to prevent partial update problems in the future if I decide to update as a restricted user.  (I just can't help myself and stop playing with fire sometimes.)

MacLover,

I run Ad-aware build 181 also.  It scans my hard drive with approximately 14 GB in 15 minutes, give or take.

This application has some update issues too.  Just after my recent SB S & D "update," I ran Ad-aware and attempted an update, just to see if it would work under a limited account.  It went through the motions reporting that the update was downloaded and installed successfully.  But, it is still using the old reference file; the new file was never downloaded according to its timestamp.  During subsequent attempts, it found the same new reference file and "downloaded" it.  It reported erroneously that I cancelled two updates.  The same lack of access permissions is causing this problem too, but for the time being I'm going to leave it alone.

The other day, running with administrative priveleges, I successfully updated the reference file, but it took a couple of attempts.  One update attempt hanged the program.  I ignored it and continued to use the computer for another hour or so to finish the projects I was working on, then I killed it with the task manager.  Within minutes, Explorer crapped out and had to be restarted, and subsequently I had to restart Windows.  (When Explorer dies sometimes I can continue working, once a couple of hours, but within minutes strange things start to happen, usually quickly snowballing.  I've learned that whenever Explorer or Internet Explorer fail -- they're heavily intertwined -- it's best to save my work and reboot.)

Regards,
Hornus

Hornus,

It seems as though Spybot has suffered server overload!
I hope they square it away.  I really liked the program in my XP.  Fortunately, it still works in my W98 and ME machines.

As for Adaware, I have not had any more update problems since installing build 181.  Please note that the update function uses Port 80 which is normally blocked by spyware programs.

I will keep you up to date on any new developments in these programs.

The problem with downloading Spybot updates has nothing to do with Avast. It's simply a function of selecting a mirror site, otherwise, it just hangs.  Once you click for and it finds Updates, then select the downward arrow next to UniDo (actually it's easy to miss because it  looks liike Undo and we simply disregard it), and select a site . Then click DOWNLOAD UPDATES ; it's instantaneous !!!

I thought I had sent a solution this morning but I must have pushed the wrong button !!!
The problem with Spybot updates has, in my opinion, nothing to do with Avast. The problem is not selecting a mirror site.
When an update is available, before selecting Download, click on the downward arrow in the Unido box (it looks like UNDO so I think we disregard it automatically) and select a download site. Then click Download.

There is detection rules updates (700k)!  ;)
The download, as usual, is not so 'simple' regardless what say the other users...
