hi and welcome,
do you have a firewall installed and if so have you given Avast! the permissions it requires?
see slide 3 permissions include avast setup  which is the updating module

I have no firewall  installed. I do use a linksys router but connecting directly to the cable modem gave same result. IE6 works fine and so does pegasus email program. Any ideas to try please as without updating the Avast is no help to me.

Rondoc, did you ever used the Professional version of avast? And the Trial?
Are you with Home (free) now?

If you double click the setup.exe file that you've downloaded, what do you get?

I now cannot use my email prgram , it will nether allow incoming or for me to send email, When trying to send email I get this:
>> 0082 421  Cannot connect to SMTP server 68.6.19.4 (68.6.19.4:25), connect error 10061
<< 0011 EHLO rons
7: Socket read error 2745.
I thought that Avista would be a great prgm but it seems to be difficult to get it to just work! I am using winXP home edition.
Any ideas please I am not ready to give up yet....

to get a handle on exactly how you have got to where your`e at
We need to know what OS you have and what hardware you are working through.
You mention a router and a modem
Avast installs differently for win xp than it does for win 98.
If you still have the installation download for Avast! on your system then keep it handy as we might need to use it again.
Are you on dial up , cable or adsl?
