Title: Mouse lost and computer freeze after latest update 4.6.731
Post by: surfseek on November 14, 2005, 12:43:12 AM
Hello, ::)

I am really struggling here. After the last update 4.6.731 I am having real big problems. I do hope you can help. ???

I run Windows 98 SE
Zone Alarm
248RAM
8768MB free disk space

I have not had any problems with AVAST HOME EDITION 4.6 until this latest update 4.6.731. I first installed Avast in January 2005

When I click on program update all goes OK, download window, installation window until the summary window comes up and my mouse with egg timer disappear and my computer freezes. I tried a repair of Avast. This didn't work. I have un-installed and re-installed Avast home edition and the problem still exists. What it means is that I cannot update my antivirus without losing mouse and the computer freezing. I have to turn the computer off from the tower. Ctrl/ Alt delete does not work.

I have not installed anything else on my computer for months. I have been running Zone Alarm free edition for 5 years.

If there is any other info you need so that I can be helped with this problem please let me know.

Awaiting your help

Thanks

I suggest you download the avast program again (not the update program function) and also the Avast Uninstall Utility, find it here (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_uninstall_util.html).

Uninstall avast! (current version) using windows add remove, boot, run the avast uninstall utility, boot. Your system should be ok now assuming it was avast related (which I think may be a coincidence), install the latest download and boot.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi David R,

Thanks for your reply. I have done everything you suggested.  :'(

Unfortunately the problem with the mouse disappearing at exactly the same point (summary window) and 'puter freezing has not been resolved with the completely new installation.

I am pretty sure it is linked to the 4.6.731 update/version of Avast home Edition.

Where do I go, or what do I try from here please?  ???

Thank You

Will it be possible to test uninstalling ZoneAlarm, booting, repairing avast! installation, install ZoneAlarm again and boot?
If you look at the providers settings, which is the last scanned file by Standard Shield?

Hi there,

I will try un-ininstalling Zone Alarm.

Prior to this:

The last file scanned file in Standard Shield before logging in to this forum and before uninstallation of Zone Alarm was: C:Windows\...........spool32.exe.

After logging in C:Windows\..............script (1).js

I will uninstall ZA now and repair Avast per your instructions.

Thanks for keeping up to the mark with me regarding this situ!!

 Hi there,

So far I have un-installed Zone Alarm (free),. Checked Avast at this point and it worked fine.

I then repaired Avast and was preparing to re-install Zone Alarm.

Prior to this I thought I would run their spyware scanner first as per their instructions!

These were the results:

  CasinoOnNet - Adware

  RegistryKey - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\casinoonnet\

  RegistryKey - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Casino On Net\

  VX2.BetterInternet - Browser Plugin, Adware

  File Name - C:\WINDOWS\bi.ini

  Tribalfusion - 3rd Party Cookie

  URL - Cookie:alison kelly@tribalfusion.com/

  Win32.Mydoom.I-Worm - Worm

  RegistryKey - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE

As you can imagine I went into a panic when I saw My Doom. Avast didn't pick it up, so I am at the moment running Panda Active Scan to double check!!!!!

I am rigorous about protecting my computer so I would be surprised if it is there but we shall see when Panda scan finished. I totally trust Avast but I want to be sure.

If this is an underhand way of Zone Alarm trying to get us to purchase the Firewall then I am not too happy as you can imagine.

Whilst this waiting is going on, and in the most likely event that Zone alarm is conflicting with version 4.6.731 what other free personal firewall is good and compatible with Avast. if we cannot resolve it.

Panda's scan has now finished, and like Avast says I am clean!!.

I will try re-installing Zone Alarm now and be back soon with results

CasinoOnNet - Adware RegistryKey / VX2.BetterInternet - Browser Plugin, Adware File Name / 3rd Party Cookie Cookie
You could delete (remove) them.

Win32.Mydoom.I-Worm - Worm
RegistryKey - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE
The Registry Key is very strange. You won't have ANYTHING installed if you remove the tree. Are you sure?

Well, if you did not have avast! pretty installed... it should fail. Besides, firewall is as necessary as the antivirus.

Whilst this waiting is going on, and in the most likely event that Zone alarm is conflicting with version 4.6.731 what other free personal firewall is good and compatible with Avast. if we cannot resolve it.
There is not a conflic... They're running perfectly in XP SP2+

The Registry Key is very strange. You won't have ANYTHING installed if you remove the tree. Are you sure?

I copied and pasted the results into my post and the above is what came up.

I will delete what I can re the other entries but this one is very strange. As you say I cannot delete the whole HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE.

the last scanned file with Resident scanner this time is C:\Windows\.......spellcheck(1)j.s

The bad news though is that I have double checked updating Avast before re-installing Zone Alarm and exactly the same problem happens. This is without Zone Alarm installed!

When this happens I cannot access anything as computer freezes, mouse disappears which means I also cannot access info on files in Standard Shield!!

I have rebooted again after freeze and tested again. Just before another freeze(prior to summary window) I checked the last scanned file by Standard Shield and it was C:Program Files\...........Avast.setup\

Here is what I would do.   Install ZA Free, Check Settings, Check Prog Control. Check Logs for New Entries. Install the Last Working Version of AVAST.  Also Install Ad-Aware. Spy Bot S&D, Ewido & see what You Find.  Good Luck

Don't delete anything manually or you won't be able to use any software in your computer... you can't even boot in some cases!
You should Google for specific cleaners of MyDoom.

The bad news though is that I have double checked updating Avast before re-installing Zone Alarm and exactly the same problem happens. This is without Zone Alarm installed!
You shoul get cleaned before trying to do anything else. Does avast! scanning detect anything? Can you run avast! at boot time (schedule it)?

I checked the last scanned file by Standard Shield and it was C:Program Files\...........Avast.setup\
avast.setup is the update of avast. It's ok but has nothing to do with the computer freeze.

Hi Bill,

I have checked and double checked for any viruses and apart from the zone alarm spyware scanner(info above) none of the antivirus solutions I have used have picked My Doom Up. I even used the Avast detection tool for My Doom but it says I haven't got it. So I must be clean. Panda says I'm clean too. Avast Antivirus picked up W32: CTX after the panda scan but I know this is one of Panda Software files that Avast picks up.

I have Adaware installed and also SpyBot.

What is EWIDO?

Please forgive me, but I don't quite understand the instructions you gave me re program settings etc in Zone Alarm.

I have used two cleaners for My Doom. Panda Tool and Avast Tool. Both say I haven't got it!!!!!

I am pretty sure I am clean. I ran Panda. Nothing detected. I ran the PQ tool from Panda. Nothing Detected. I ran Avast antivirus and their My Doom detection tool. Nothing detected. The only virus picked up by Avast was after the PandaScan. W32:CTX. I know this is part of Panda.

avast.setup is the update of avast. It's ok but has nothing to do with the computer freeze.

Well that is good news about avast, however my problem still remains!!!!! Mouse loss and freeze.

:'( :-\ Is there anything else I can try?

Thanking you again in anticipation

Hi, :'(

I checked this out but doesn't seem to be available for W98SE. Only for W2000 or XP.

I do know of another tool which I haven't run yet. http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

I will do that now.

Trojan Scan came up clean.

I did a further Zone Alarm Spyware scan and it was more detailed this time. Turns out the My Doom reference was for Panda quick Remove. I have successfully removed all the logs except:

  VX2.BetterInternet - Browser Plugin, Adware

  File Name - C:\WINDOWS\bi.ini

I removed the bi.ini file from find files or folders but it is still registering.

Anyhow, this is not really your problem but I am just trying to eliminate other problems.

Would still welcome any further possible solutions to the problem of mouse loss and freeze. Especially if I am clear of dirty stuff! :(

Thanks

;D

Hello there  :D

I think I may have possibly found the solution to my problem of mouse disappearing and computer freezing when updating Avast, since version 4.6.731.

I think it is to do with Zone Alarm. I would like to mention however that my Zone alarm settings have not caused any conflict until this latest Avast update.

Having checked my computer endlessly for viruses,Trojans etc and all being clear I thought I would try changing settings in Zone Alarm. I disabled Basic Mail Safe setting and un-ticked Protect Zone Lab Client. I read somewhere in other posts, certainly about Mailsafe and thought I would at least give it a try. Well, something seems to be working for the moment as all seems to be up and running WELL. As I speak I am going to try again................Dum De Dum De Dum :-\

.................De Dum. WHOOPEE ;D. I think all is now well.

I am a bit confused though because I got this freezing etc. when I un-installed Zone Alarm. Maybe it might be to do with getting rid of some of the entries that came up in spyware checker from Zone Alarm. All except

VX2.BetterInternet - Browser Plugin, Adware
File Name - C:\WINDOWS\bi.ini

I can't seem to get rid of this one.

I will keep you posted  because it is still being a bit erratic.

Hey there David, just got your last post. I will keep this very valuable info in reserve if it plays up again. I have to be honest I have tried to use HJT in the past and got very confused.Bit nervous about that. Also, How do I reinstall my mouse driver on Windows 98. I have a logitech mouse.

I can't seem to get rid of this one.

Schedule a boot-time scanning: Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning
Select for scanning archives. Boot.

Other way is scanning in SafeMode (repeatedly press F8 while booting): http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315222

Other good thing is disable System Restore, boot, enable it again. If you find a virus keeps coming back after you delete it, it's most probably infected the System Restore folder, the best way to solve this is to disable System Restore, reboot your machine and then enable it again. After all, run a full avast! scanning. System Restore cannot be disabled on Windows 9x and it's not available in Windows 2k.

Hi there,

Thanks again for info.

I am running Windows 98. I don't have a system restore facility. I tried to schedule a boot scan as you suggested but it is greyed out and that option is not available to me. I will do a scan in safe mode and see what that does.

In the meantime, any suggestions as to how I reinstall mouse driver?

Thanks

Can't you download from the manufacturer website?

If you have resolved the freezing issue, I would leave the mouse driver alone.

Here is an on-line analysis of your logfile, there are a number of entries indicated as nasty and possibly nasty.

If not fix them in HJT.

Hi there again,

I think I will have to do that. I eventually found how to update driver. Apparently there is one but I have to insert a Disk which I have never had. I have an OEM computer.

Re your last post I will hang on a while for mouse.

The three entries you mention are all to do with Compaq. I have a compaq presario computer. Well they look as if they are to do with presario!

Will any damage be done if I get rid of these entries?

I have clicked on them and two seem to be Alta Vista And the other one Yahoo.Strange. I don't need any of these. Shall I go ahead and delete them in HJT. What have they got to do with Presario?

Thanks a mill

I wouldn't have thought so, however, HJT does make a back-up should it be necessary to restore them.

I also can't really see why those would need to be set-up, what happens if you make a search where something is not found, probably sends you to the Compaq web site or it makes your default search engine the presario web site? I think it is just them having a redirect to their search engine flavor of the month and as such not really necessary.

Thanks very much for that.

Blast, Blast and Blast :P :P :P

I'm sorry to report and frustrated that it has happened again on summary window of update. Mouse loss and freeze. I have noticed something that might be relevant. Each time over the last few freezes it seems to happen on download18!!. I actually ran a test many hours ago because I had noticed it froze on 18 but it didn't come up again till now!!!

What do you think?

You are being so very helpful  :D. I only wish we could get to the root of this. ???

P.S. I ran a boot scan overnight. Clean

Can you say what you mean by mouse loss, the pointer freezing or disappearing or something else?

A system could freeze for a number of reasons some hardware (bad memory, graphics, Heat, PSU), some software related and possibly running out of system resources (a little more information on your system might be helpful), too much running. Trying to track them down is very troublesome and time consuming. A google search for "screen freeze in win 98" without the quotes returns many hits.

If you are able to get a copy of the mouse driver, you could save it on your HDD and when asked for a location of the driver, browse/point to its location on the HDD.

I have also noticed on your HJT log something which has been seen here before which may be spyware/adware:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\PSTORES.EXE
In the system folder it is likely that it is OK but worth checking here: Jotti - Multi engine on-line virus scanner (http://virusscan.jotti.org/)

What VER. of ZAF do you have?  I notice Settings may change after a Crash, PWR Shutdown, Reinstall, Ect  I also CK for  something Calling Home on the Logs. I have Mail Uncheck to  avoid Conflict with Avast. I have Protect Client Checked.

When I get a Slowdown or Freezup I go to Task Manager &  look at CPU & Process for a Clue to the problem.

Have You done any File & Reg. Cleaning?

Hi David R, :)

My mouse pointer and egg timer disappear completely and then 'puter freezes.

What other info would you like about my system.?

I have 11 items running at start up.

System Tray
Scan registry
Task Monitor
Load Power Profile x 2
Avast Web serve
Ashmaisv
Zone Labs client
KB891711
Avast
True Vector

Microsoft Windows 98 4.10.2222 A

Available space on drive C: 8712MB of 11513MB (FAT32)
Available space on drive D: 601MB of 2792MB (FAT32)

I have version 6.0.667.000 of Zone Alarm (Free).

Forgive me, but what is ' I also CK for  something Calling Home on the Logs' ???

I have re-checked 'protect zone lab client'.

I do a scan reg regularly and a defrag. I also run CC cleaner about once a week.

I don't have a task manager running Windows 98. (i don't think so anyhow).

:'(I do get the task list up however after the freeze and loss of mouse at the summary window after an Avast update and it says Avast not responding. I can't seem to check cp usage however. I can't access much else without the mouse.

:(I have been away for a few days. The first thing I did was get an update and consequently a  freeze also. This time it was download 13 that froze and not 18.

:'(I hope this info will be of some use in the hope that we might be able to solve this problem with Avast updates on my computer.

I am trying to use this Jottis malware scanner at mo. These are the results:

1. The KB891711 may have a direct bearing on this, cursor/Icon disappearance:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS05-002.mspx
Quote
Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-002
Vulnerability in Cursor and Icon Format Handling Could Allow Remote Code Execution (891711)

Issued: January 11, 2005
Updated: April 12, 2005
Version: 2.0

Can you recollect when you installed this KB891711 and if these problems started to occur since then?
If this is a start-up item you could try disabling the start-up entry for it and see if this is having a direct effect.

2. It looks like the Pstores is not an issue.

Not wanting to put words into Bill G's mouth but I think Bill G is saying check the Zone Alarm logs for any programs (that you don't recognise) with an outbound connection that you didn't initiate at about the time of the freeze. However, I think this unlikely since it looks like your system is clear but always worth a look.

:)Hi there,

I installed KB891711 on 17th March 05. I have not had any problems or conflicts with this installation during this period. Either with mouse disappearing or freezing. The only possible problem I may have with it, maybe now,(re your post) after the addition of the last version update for Avast. (4.6.731).

I will try disabling it at start up and see if that stops the problem. Does that mean though that KB89711 will then not be running if I do that and what are the possible consequences of that?

Thanks for getting back so promptly

1. If you disable it at startup then no it won't be running.
2. The consequences of that is that you may be vulnerable to the attack that is mentioned in the link I gave you to the KB article. See the FAQ and Vulnerability information available on the link.

There is a lot of information there which should help you decide if the problem you are experiencing is related to this patch and the chance of having the vulnerability present for a short period of time whilst testing to see if by not running this KB you don't get the freeze. I can't make that decision for you.

How do I get a copy of my mouse driver?. I don't know how to do this.

I have disabled KB........ at start up. So far I have not had another freeze when updating Avast. I will see how this goes. I am a little nervous of not having this critical update running. I am pretty cautious re surfing etc so I will leave it disabled and see how it goes over next couple of days.

What is it about Version Avast 4.6.731 that possibly conflicts with this update? I say this because it is the only thing possibly conflicting.

I have read the FAQ and vulnerability section of the link you sent me but I am not really sure I have understood it to be honest and how it would affect me if I don't have it installed.

Thanks for ALL your help

Use Comentário WinDriversBackup 1.0 (http://www.jermar.com/wdrvbck1.exe) to make backups of all your drivers.

I (and all others) don't have a conflict with any Microsoft updates... Maybe the driver for your specific mouse... but I won't talk that there is a conflict, well, just in your case, not for all ones.

To get a driver for your mouse, you need to go to the manufactures web site of your mouse and see if they do driver updates (they really should), you will obviously need to know the mouse model and get the latest driver for it.

I have seen many MS patches and security updates have an adverse effect after installation and when you are talking about a patch that supports older OSes like win98 and winME and the later w2k, xp and win2003 server, I personally can't see how one size fits all. There are huge numbers of permutations out there when you are talking about OSes, hardware, drivers, etc. that on occasion when several things coincide a clash can happen. You may also find it difficult to find drivers for your mouse because it is for the win98 OS.

As I said I can't make the decision for you. Your OS is already very long in the tooth and poorly supported (should read not supported) by MS even when it comes to security updates. Because you are running win98, you can't run the latest version of IE6 so these thing already make you somewhat more vulnerable.

:) When Ewido was found to be incompatible with your Win 98
someone should have recommended its "counterpart"
namely A-squared. The FREE ver of this program is
compatible with Win 98 and you can find it at :
     www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free .
Concerning Trojanscan : did you see the following :
"My computer keeps showing that your database hasn’t been updated for a long time. I found out that the scanner was being updated regularly. So how come the free online scanner on my computer cannot update? What can I do to correct this?

What you have to do is find the ActiveX component on your computer and delete it so the newest version of the TrojanScanner can be downloaded on your computer. The program gets downloaded in C:\temp\tdecntrl. To refresh it what you have to do is close Internet Explorer and delete the directory. Then reopen Internet Explorer and return to http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/ and you should be asked if you want to download the newest scanner. "

The version of KB891711 that you have installed is the first release. There was a problem with it, much like you are experiencing. MS released a new version in April, it resolves the freezing issue and also KB891711 will not so up as a running process any longer. However it will appear in the Startup tab (msconfig). If you uninstall the earlier version and down load and install the new one you should be alright.

info about the two versions  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891711

you can get the new version here (click on windows update catalog if update doesn't give it to you)   http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

As for your mouse driver. On your desk top, there should be an icon for quick restore or compaq utilities or something like that. The same icon you use to do a system save. Click  "selective " , click mose drivers.

(We have almost identical systems, it's just that I've done a factory restore after the Compaq site went down and can't get the download to put the exact icon on my destop(had to make my own short cut))

I don't think you have a mouse problem, and as someone else mentioned, leave it alone.

Luck to you

Hi there,
Thanks for this. I did do a check of my Windows update installations and apparently I did do another download of the second version in April 05. Because of the problems I am having I un-installed KB891711. I thought temporarily this had sorted the problems with Avastupdates but sad to say it hasn't. I have since re-installed it which I presume will be the second version.I did all of this in Safe Mode.

Yes!!!, I thought I could do it through Compaq but I couldn't remember how. I am glad to have this info. Thank you. I did download and install the Driverguide Toolkit as suggested in an earlier post but for some reason my computer does not like it.

I know my computer is a bit long in the tooth but I would like if possible to resolve this issue with Avast updates in the 4.6.731 version. I have tried everything suggested thus far but the problem remains, albeit erratic

You can tell which version you are using, if kb891711 shows up when you bring up "close program" (control-alt-delte) then you have the first one. If it dosen't you have the second. Also check start-run-(type "msconfig" without the quotes) start up tab. kb891711 should be there. There may be two enteries. Only one needs to be checked. If one is checked and you DO NOT have it listed in the close program box, then you should be able to safely rule out kb891711 as your problem.

Absolutely bang on. I do have the second version of KB891711. Yes, I am looking to agree that I don't think this is the problem now, either. Since my last post I have re-installed my mouse driver. I am going to check the Avast updates now and see what happens.

Thanks for this. I have now managed to get this to work at least enough to save a copy of the mouse driver onto the hard drive. I don't seem to be able to go any further with this though re updating driver. Is this because it is only the evaluation version?

I have since discovered also, through another very helpful post that Compaq have a selective restore facility also, so if in the event I try to update my driver (if absolutely everthing else fails) after having just re-installed my previous mouse driver then I now have two back ups!

Thanks for you help

No. To restore a drive you must use Control Panel > Hardware applet > choose a device and update the driver, pointing to the specific folder where you have saved the drivers before. You can't have an automatic 'restore' because, thinking better, it will be a 'driver installer' and not restorer.

Before going any further, especially before installing anti-spyware products there are many rogues out there and this would appear to be one of them, check out this link and look for ScanSpyware: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm.

Besides this there are many freeware anti-spyware options.

Just a little note, if you can remove the large amounts of white space (blank lines, enter key, etc.) at the bottom of your posts, it makes the thread much longer. I'm wearing out my scroll wheel and mouse ;D ;D

I am very sorry about the White spaces  ::) :-[. I will try and sort that out.

I have tried absolutely everything suggested David, regarding this ongoing problem with the updates in version 4.6.731. I will just have to update my computer when I am about to come out of it until the solution can be found. It freezes at this point anyway as you know.

My computer however must be as clean as it has ever been.

Would the Zone Alarm settings have anything to do with it regarding what is allowed and what has to be asked for. i.e Do I have to allow server permissions for Avast as a default? I haven't done this before mind but again worth a try if you think it might make any difference.

The problem is there are so many permutations and interactions as to make it extremely difficult to pin it down. I think we have exhausted all the obvious options with no result, sorry I've run out of ideas.

If this really was a problem with the 4.6.731 update then I would have expected to have a lot more people with win98 experiencing this problem.

If you have still retained the old 4.6.691 version setupeng.exe file then it would be an option to revert to that. However, this is not an option that I would generally recommend as program updates usually improve functions and fix any existing bugs, etc. so it is a backward step and one which may not resolve the problem. Yes the problem occurred after the update, but that could have been a coincidence.

If you saved the old file (as it won't be available from the avast web site) you would need to use add remove to remove the existing version, reboot. I would recommend using the Avast Uninstall Utility, find it here (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_uninstall_util.html) run that, reboot and finally install the 4.6.691 version if you have that. Unfortunately you would have to disable auto program update otherwise you could be back to square one. Monitor these forums to see when the next program update comes out and try that and see if it works for you.

??? Yes I am certainly agreeing with you. Many different permutations and I've tried just about everything suggested and more. The only thing I can try is to get hold of a version of 4.6.691 as I don't think I have a copy of it. I have tried searching for it on my computer but I did a complete un-install and re-install earlier of Avast and I think this may have got rid of it. I know this is not what you would truly recommend but hey it is worth a try at least to confirm or not whether it is a problem with the updated version on my computer. ::).

Thanks as ever

I have Reread this Tread & have a few more Ideas. I have 4 entries in ZA , all are set  to VVXX . Due to Problems with ZA6 I run ZA 5.5.094.000.
For lack of a Better Idea You may try ZA5.5 .

If You Choose To Accept this Mission You need to Clean Out all Old traces of Files & Reg. entries for ZA before Installing ZA5.5 . If  You       do this we can give You more Info . You also need RegSeeker.

Well David, ::)

This is what I have resorted to. Uninstalling the latest version of avast 4.6.731. I have re-installed Version 4.6.691. I managed to get hold of a copy. I did everything you said re un-installing and also program settings re updates for the older version which I am now using.

So far all now seems well, but I will give it a couple of days or so. I understand this is not ideal and the newer version 4.6.731 fixes bugs etc, but with this version on my computer there must be a bug or an incompatibility. I will follow closely any news about any further programme update. Hopefully that might not contain the problem that I have with version 4.6.731.

I don't know about you, but I am a little exhausted now!

Thanks for all your help and suggestions.

I thought I would let you know that that VX betternet thing seems now to have disappeared. Haven't got a clue which particular program removed it but it is gawn!

I glad you are finally sorted now, it has been a journey.

I'm sorry that we weren't able to keep with 4.6.731, possibly the straw that broke the camels back on software/driver interaction so to speak.

Hopefully the next avast program update might be able to avoid it (keep watching the forums and keep your copy of 4.6.691 secure, just in case). However, with win98 you are unfortunately likely to bump into these things as less and less software and hardware manufacturers are willing to develop products that support older OSes.

:) ;D Yes it has been a long journey but at least it is sorted for now by going back to previous version. Having sorted a solution at least until the next program update I have had time to browse other topics and I note with great interest that updating in Version 4.6.731 is becoming quite a problem. Obviously not just with Windows 98, although I accept that my computer is quite old now but the problem with updates either automatic or manual in this version seem to be causing a lot of problems for users. Lets hope it can be fixed.

I hope you will be able to advise me of how to keep my version 4.6.691 secure, just in case. By the time the next update arrives I may not be able to retrieve it off the net.

I look forward to receiving this info if you are allowed to share it.

;D Thanks for everything

Glad your betternet problem disappeared.

To keep your 4.6.691 safe, put a copy of the down load in another folder, or on a cd. With your Compaq, you could do a system save before you try another update. That way you could restore your entire computer to that date if something goes wrong.

I, too, have noticed many other posts with problems with the updates.

As far as IE6, I never cared much for it when it first came out, neither on a 98 or xp machine, so I stayed with a devil I knew. ;D

BTW alexa is a part of IE. The jury is split on whether or not it is spyware. A little info http://www.imilly.com/alexa.htm (you can live without it)

Thanks for that. Yes of course I can. Forgot about that.

Yes, indeed. There must be a glitch somewhere. I hope they can fix it.

As far as the Alexa entry was concerned, Adaware and Spybot had already picked it up and I had quarantined it but there was still one link picked up by scanware. Anyway that's gone now.!! ;D

Thanks again for the info

I think there isn't any problem with the updater feature.

If you haven't already saved the 4.6.691 version that you obviously found to be able to revert to, just save it in a folder in your HDD, I have a folder called downloads for all my downloads. That way I know where they are, however if you subsequently download the latest version of avast and saved it to the same folder it would be replaced (not what you want)by the next version of setupeng.exe, etc. So change the filename of what you used to install 4.6.691 to setupeng-4-6-691.exe so that you know what it is and it wont be overwritten by the next avast download you eventually do.

Hi there,

Yes I looked at this link re Zone Alarm. I tried many different configurations of programs with version Avast 4.6.731 installed and one of them was without zone Alarm installed. I still had the same problem.

I un-installed this version after trying every possible combination of possible conflicts.

I got a copy of the previous version 4.6.691 off the net which I am now using  thankfully.

I have absolutely no problems now. Not one single freeze and I have Zone Alarm re-installed too.

On my computer the mouse disappearance and freezing didn't have anything to do with Zone Alarm.

I hope the next program update will not cause the same problems or I will be staying with this version.

There is definitely something not working as smoothly as one would like in vers. 4.6.731. Whether called a glitch or a hiccup or incompatibility. As I say, I do hope the next version will not cause this amount of trouble.

Surfseek, I'm trying not to be a pain... but, let's try to find what's wrong...
Do you have any other security program in your system? Like WinPatrol, PrevX, ProcessGuard, TeaTimer, Ad-watch, etc.?

Can you tell me where you got your copy of 4.6.691.

File hippo has copies of recent versions as well as the current one.
No guarantee that advised numbers match so you might have to try a couple to get the right one.
http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/?209  This one claims to be 691
good luck

I hope the site below hangs on to Avast 691 for some time because I have just installed the updated version i.e the one you have installed (4.6.739) and have exactly the same problem as with my original post re update 4.6.731. Version 691 can be retrieved from : http://www.cybertechhelp.com/download/file/avast-home-edition/

Best take the advice of uninstalling your current version with the avast uninstaller before re-installing 691.

Hi David  ::),

I am back. I monitored the forums and downloaded the latest program update 4.6.739. Unfortunately I have exactly the same problem again. I can't stress enough how I have not had this problem after reverting back to program version 691 over this last month, so there has to be something in the update features of the updated programs which is causing this problem.

I did a system save before downloading this version so I can go back to it more easily this time, but I can't stress enough how disappointed I am.

In relation to a much earlier post, I am not aware of any other security programs running on my computer. I am now running ZA 6.1.737.000 since we last communicated. I have also disabled KB891711 at start up.

More Blasts I am afraid :P :-[ :(

There is a new program update, 4.6.744 you might want to try that, but keep your 4.6.691 version handy ;D

Edit: surfseek are you having a problem with quoting, you aren't commenting after the quote so it is hard to tell the purpose or the quote?

Wow that was quick!! :o

I am downloading version .744 now. :-\

Re the quote with no reply! I made a mistake but I couldn't rectify it. Sorry about that. ???

Will be back in a mo to let you know the outcome of the update.

I am updating from version.739. Is that OK or should I totally uninstall and start all over again?

I would have tended to go with a download 4.6.744 followed by an uninstall, reboot and install if I had been experiencing problems. If you have already done it and it doesn't work, perhaps what I suggested.

You can go into the post and delete the quoted section and replace with, intential deletion, or edit duplicate post, etc. which will clean it up a bit.

Hi David,

I have tried to clean up the quote as you suggested but I don't know how to get rid of all the white space now,

Regarding the latest update. :-[ :-[. Same problems I am afraid. It has taken me a while to sort my unhappy computer out. I have tried what you suggested but I have had to revert again to version 691.

After installing version .744 and reinstalling, we got to the summary window and computer froze and mouse cursor disappeared. Each and every time. Same as in the previous two versions. I am back on version 691 again now and all seems fine.

Not a happy bunny really.

I suppose I will just have to keep hoping that one of the future program updates will resolve this very frustrating issue.
