Hi everyone,
Update KB947821 (released October 2014) just appeared now on my Vista computer as ready to update.
Does anyone know why it took almost a year to show up? Is there some problem with this update/tool as there are with others?
Would anyone else also be a bit hesitant to install an update that appears 10 months after being released?
Thank you to whomever can shed light on this issue.

It doesn't say why the update/tool waited for ten months before appearing in my "Windows updates".

As to why it just now appeared impossible to say unless corruption of some sort was detected in WS Store.

SURT may have been updated to check for windows 10 compatibility ... Just my two pennorth :)

No.
If you've got a back up plan in place, then you'll be able to recover from any issues with your system in minutes rather than hours or days.
Back up plan = routine disk imaging.

In this case I assume a system restore to an earlier restore point would do the trick as well.

Now the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista (KB947821) that was released in May 2014 appeared in my Windows Updates as well. Next thing I know, they'll be giving me readiness tools from 2013 and who knows from what other year ::) .

I wouldn't rely on system restore. In fact, I have it turned off. I rely on several images, file backups, and syncs.

Once you upgrade, there is no restore point to go back too.
You need an image backup if you want to restore your system after you've upgraded to Windows 10.

I won't be doing that.
This computer doesn't deserve and probably can't handle an upgrade.
Is it even possible to upgrade from Vista to W10?

If the little windows icon appears for you and you click it it should state whether your computer is compatible.
I have the all green but will wait until Windows10 growth pains "have eased out", if you know what I mean.

It runs a compatibility check - if it passes that in theory - you would be good to go.
If it is possible for Vista to update to win10 (and I'm not sure it can) then you would probably have to pay, as the free upgrade to win10 is for qualifying versions of win7 and win8.1.
It would appear to be a possibility that it will update to win10 from Vista, why otherwise would they have a specific Viste

When your computer does not qualify for a free update to windows 10 you won't see it appear.
It appears in the task bar on the right hand side, and it is smaller than the white windows icon at the left for Windows 8.1 for instance. All others that had it since July 26/27 etc. know what I am talking about. As you cannot be aware, you probably won't know what we are talking about. Read the threads about Windows 10 and I am sure that bob3160 has mentioned it a few times. He is really Windows 10 savvy and has published a whole thread on this subject.

Thanks polonus, in middle of reading your explanation I remembered what you're talking about (though I don't have it, I've seen a screenshot of it around before).
I won't be upgrading this slow computer to W10 anyway, so a restore point will do for the purposes of this discussion, though I'll wait on installing these System Update Readiness Tools, maybe once the one from the year 2000 appears (at the rate they're appearing :D) I'll consider installing the old Readiness Tools ;).
