Title: searching for secure connection

Please forgive me if this is an old topic as I am a new user. I did a search for the topic but found no answers.
I have a brand new Macbook pro on a very fast internet connection. Ever since I installed Avast when I open a browser it takes forever for me to connect to my home page telling me it is searching for a secure connection. This also happens in my home where I know I am on a secure network. When I uncheck "Scan secure connections" in preferences everything works fine but that defeats the purpose. What am I doing wrong?
