Title: instup.exe (code 0x3)
Post by: REDACTED on July 23, 2015, 02:17:35 PM
Hello everyone,

i have some problems with repairing/reinstalling Avast (free). Not sure if it was caused with latest windows or avast program udate, but my PC froze yesterday two times by streaming online videos - had to do hard reset. So i decided to use older restore point of windows. I don´t know if that helped to the original problem :) But the main thing is, avast stoped working. I have tried nearly everything, nothing helped.

Another restor points
Repair/uninstall in cotrol panel - do nothing
avastclear.exe - gave mi this: The stub cannot run installer/updater executable 'C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\setup\Sfx\instup.exe' (code 0x3)

I red here about same problem, so I ran FRST, my logs are uploaded with this message.

Could anyone write the Fixlist for me?

Thank you very much a sorry for my english

If possible then open Avast GUI and in settings > troubleshooting disable self defence

If this is not possible then run the following fix from safe mode

CAUTION :  This fix is only valid for this specific machine, using it on another may break your computer

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Thank you essexboy, it worked, avast reinstalled, perfect  ;D

Only to the original problmem, could it be a virus or somethnig wrong in Vista, with that crash by video streaming?
For example youtube, last 1-2 month, when watching CPU is on 100% and the video is "skipping" and yesterday PC two times colapsed. Never happened before. So I blamed avast, but it seems to be the problem somewhere els.

I tryed ccleaner, adwcleaner, but ther is no difference.

On more thing, when PC is still, CPU is skipping from 0 to 10% every 5 second... :(
I connected it to this process: WmiPrvSE.exe  -   NETWORK SERVICE  -  WMI Provider Host

But here my skills ends :/  I am suspicious of net framework and task manager, but thats all.

If you have any suggestions, I would be happy  :)
Thank you for your help.

It is Vista I am afraid apart from XP and 7 the interim windows were prone to crashing or just generally misbehaving.  There was no malware evident on the system

WMI is a known high CPU problem for Vista and 7

OK thanks :) I understand, when it si going to be worse, just to do new windows installation...  :D I was thinking about malwarebytes could help, but as you say, probably not.

Last thing, I see on my disk folder of the FRST with Quarantine, where the rest of the original avast is. Can I try to delete it and the FRST too? It is 0,5 Gb...
