Title: Why does Avast keep installing Chrome?

About twice per day, Avast pops up and installs Chrome and puts Malware/Shareware on my machine. Is that the price I pay for NOT upgrading to a pay version?

avast does not put malware/shareware on your system.

you have to choice to install Chrome or not when you install avast
