Title: Avast free block wiki images
Post by: REDACTED on July 27, 2015, 07:26:19 PM
I just installed avast after using bitdefender free for a long time. But avast blocks random wiki images, often gif. When I followed link, it showed this
ERR_SPDY_PROTOCOL_ERROR

The webpage at https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/dd/Gas_OPR.gif might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

Both Firefox and Chrome are affected, IE is not. When I turned avast off, the problem disappeared so it seems it came from avast.

Win 8.1, comodo firewall + avast.

What can I do?

Thanks

I was searching for answer... and contrary to other solutions:

1. I have had DNS set to Gooogle DNS (8.8.8.8)

2. When I set my computer network DNS to "default" DNS

3. Error dissappeared.

Thank you very much, it worked, but but but... why?

I used avast on other computer with google DNS without any problem.

It worked shortly after change DNS, but then the problem reappeared. It seems the DNS is not the source of the problem. Googled it and it seems some people got it too with avast and chrome

I'm having exactly the same issue on a different website. Interestingly, the problem for me is also happens with gif files (it happened once for png files too). Everything else is fine on the same domain, but the gifs are never.
I have tried on a clean installed Windows 10 and on a Windows 8.1 and it's always happens but only with Google Chrome.
The error is always the same too: ERR_SPDY_PROTOCOL_ERROR
I have also tried turning off the https scanning, but the result was the same. As soon as I disable the web shield feature, it works. After I re-enable it, it works for X hours, then the problem starts again. It started like a month or two ago. I'm using the latest avast Premier version (10.3.2225). I think it started with an earlier update.
Edit: A few plus info. I don't have comodo firewall, I use Google DNS too, but it's managed by the router, the PC gets the router's IP as a DNS server via DHCP.
I have also tried to play with the settings, but the only solution is to turn off the web shield component.
I have also read and experienced an issue on normal a normal webpage: the error showed up, then page refreshed (google chrome tries to load the content again if there is an issue), and the page loaded fine.
Edit 2: The issue is also represent on facebook for example. Again, the gifs...

Is there anyone from Avast who can help me/I can help him to debug this?

I have no problems with the gif link posted either in Chrome or Firefox.
I'm also not using the Comodo firewall. :)

I also have the same problem on multiple computers. Let's take this page for example:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GIF

Once I load it the first time, it usually displays all .gif images like it should, but if I refresh page once all those images disappear and refuse to load. However, if I do a complete reload (CTRL+F5), they display again. Other sites don't display the same behavior, which is quite strange.

E: Also the problem is certainly caused by avast, as disabling Web Shield fixes the problem instantly. On the other computer using Avast Free adding .gif files to web shield exclusion list fixed all problems, but on the other computer using Avast Pro Antivirus it doesn't change a thing.

E2: apparently disabling HTTPS scanning fixes it for the computer using Pro AV too, still really strange bug that devs should look into.

You don't say what browser you are using ?

With Firefox 40.0.3, the only image that doesn't reload on a refresh for me is the first animated .gif, the others are there.
Shift + F5 or Shift + refresh icon restores it.

I don't know why it would exhibit this behaviour for animated gifs.

Ah, sorry for forgetting that info. It happens with both Firefox 40.0.3 and Chrome 44.0.2403.157. Clearly it has something to do with HTTPS scanning, as disabling it removes the problem instantly.

I have no problems with GIFs on either link, even on reloading.  HTTPS scanning is enabled.

It is hard to say, if there is a conflict of any sort, removing one element may resolve a problem but it doesn't say for sure what is the true culprit.

Since the page is HTTPS, with the web shield not scanning it you aren't going to get the interaction.

I can confirm this issue. I don't have this issue with PNG and SVG like here (https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=174281.msg1242114#msg1242114), but I have with GIF.

Strange. :-\

I'm having an issue with the Yahoo home page not loading any images. If I turn off the shields the images load. Turn the shields back on and the images fail to load. I'm using Firefox 40.0.3 and Avast Free 10.3.2225 on Win 7. This just started yesterday. Any suggestions?

Did you happen to update yesterday (or just use yahoo home page that day) as it would be strange if it had previously worked with this build/version.
Don't turn of the shields, disable HTTPS scanning (avastUI > Settings > Active Protection > Web Shield > Customize - disable HTTPS scanning. That is a minimal action rather than completely disabling shields.

Didn't update yesterday. Last update was about 4 weeks ago. I use Yahoo home page daily. It worked until yesterday. I disabled HTTPS scanning and all the images load. When I turn it back on they don't load. Makes no sense why it would do this all of a sudden.

Exactly as I said, weird that it would be working. I hadn't previously had a problem, but I'm on the latest beta builds and since then I have had the issue.

That would be different as I don't know exactly what had changed. I was OK on the 2228 beta build, but I ended up with a build that shouldn't have been installed on XP and that is I suspect where my problem came from.

Is your problem the same....images not loading?
Title: Re: Avast free block wiki images
Post by: REDACTED on September 05, 2015, 06:02:20 PM
I can confirm that this problem exists across multiple sites with Firefox. I have the Yahoo-no-image problem on both Windows XP 32 bit and Windows 7 64 bit. Likewise, flash plugins are also blocked. This just started today. Disabling the HTTPS scan does not fix the blocking of flash plugins. I suspect that the last Avast update has some crippling, inherent incompatibility with Firefox. I have used Avast for 10 years and whenever a bugged update occurs, these kinds of system-breaking issues occur. This needs attention and, at the very least, some sort of rollback needs to happen to allow the devs to find and locate what is causing this problem. I do not like the idea of being forced to use IE for browsing and I REFUSE to use the resource hog known as Chrome. This obvious bug needs to be fixed.

Yes, though some do load but not all UK.Yahoo.com is what I use for a news catchup and that had been working just fine. But note I'm using XP Pro SP3 and https scanning is different for XP and there have been changes in how https scanning has been handled in XP.

My win7 system has been just fine with 10.3.2225.

Same thing here with both my laptops using Avast.  The Yahoo home page images on Firefox and Chrome are missing.  So frustrating.  It just started a few days ago.  I really need to know how to fix.  I've had Avast for over 10 years...never had this problem before.

I did as the above poster suggested - disabled the HTTPS scanning.  It worked which is good.  Is it OK that the scanning is disabled???

This really is a workaround, not a solution (that needs a fix from avast), but Disabling HTTPS is by far more preferable than disabling the web shield as that still scans HTTP pages.

I'm getting the "ERR_SPDY_PROTOCOL_ERROR" randomly when browsing Reddit.com

At first flushing the sockets in Chrome via: chrome://net-internals/#spdy would work for a moment, then the error would pop back again.

Turning off the webshield, reloading the page and then turning back on the webshield has fixed my issue for the moment.

This only happens in Google Chrome for me. I was able to use Firefox for a week with no issues.

I've just added an exception for
Code: [Select]
https://*.wikipedia.org/* to web shield (with https scanning on) and the problem was resolved.

I too am having this problem with Yahoo, Chrome, and Avast.  As you said turning off Avast fixes the problem.  I have tried uninstalling Avast, clearing browser hx/cookies, reinstalling Avast, only to continue to have the same problem.  And for me it appears to only be happening on Yahoo site.  Glad to hear I'm not the only one.   :-\

Same problem with one difference - re-enabling webshield solves the problem. Stronger thought about changing the antivirus.

OK, so I just registered. Here's the thing... I had problems with Facebook for 1-2 months now, where the gifs and other default images don't show at all in that page. User uploaded photos appear there (my profile pic, other pics from pages, etc), but not these images that are default for everybody on Facebook. Other pages work fine.

I have this problem on Firefox (40, 41, 41.0.1), Chrome (44, 45), on Windows 8.1/10 64bit. I have Avast Free and Comodo Free Firewall. First thing I tried turning off Comodo, but there's no problem. The Web Shield module on Avast is the single problem. Then I tried to insert www.facebook.com in Exclude in Avast, it doesn't work, the page still has blocked images. I don't know what to do with this AV software now, because I'm using it for years now, it worked great, but now that's just too much.

Lots of people have this problem, on multiple versions of OS/browsers, on multiple pages, the only constant is Avast (Free). In my case this happens on all PCs, one with everything just installed, so fresh and up-to-date from the beginning.

We need a fix ASAP. There are weeks, months already. Turning off Web Shield module makes the AV almost useless for many, since almost everything is done online these days.

The first fix for me was to flush the sockets as described, but then another Reddit user pointed out it might be Avast and to disable the Web Shield, which is why I now do. I only disable it for 10 minutes and then everything works again.
