Title: Windows 7 freeze up caused by Avast Updates - any solution ?

I have a Windows 7 equipped laptop.  I am still using Avast version 2014.9.0.2021.  Every other Update version made available by Avast since then freezes up my laptop if I try to use a web browser.  Typically it will last about 3 minutes before everything stops.  Fortunately in each case I have been able to Restore the system back to the pre-Update.

I am happy with 2104.9.0.2021 but have to be very careful to avoid the updated offerings.

Any solutions ?  What is the next best "free" antivirus package ?
