If you are running FF 40.0.3 or higher, this extension may not be available to you due to the new FF signing restriction policies:  http://www.ghacks.net/2015/02/10/mozilla-to-require-add-ons-to-be-signed-in-the-future/ (http://www.ghacks.net/2015/02/10/mozilla-to-require-add-ons-to-be-signed-in-the-future/)

When will this take effect?

Mozilla plans to display warning messages in the second quarter of 2015, likely with the release of Firefox 39 which, according to the Firefox release schedule, will land June 30, 2015.

As avast online security is a feature of avast, you normally will see it come up for the first time when avast is just installed, after which your browser will ask to  run AOS.  You either allow it to run or deny at that time.  Go to Tools>Addons>Extensions in FF and see if it is listed in there under the Add-ons Manager Tab.  If it is, then click Enable and restart FF to allow it to run in your browser as it will be disabled if Deny is used at the time of install.  If Deny is used, then you will not see the extension running in FF as it has already been disabled.

[EDIT:]  Fixed composition

Actually, the signing restriction for Firefox extensions won't be until Firefox 43 now. It's been delayed.

I am running FF 41 Beta 2 and this change is already in effect. Avast extension is disabled and there is no option to enable it due to new sign-in method.
Is this extension going to be updated for the new requirments? I personally find it quite useful.

I guess they are meeting some resistance to this draconian measure. If people are prepared to take responsibility to change about:config so they can use old no longer developed add-ons, then on their own be it.

An extract from your link by Gingerbread Man, seems to hold some hope.

All reviewed extensions hosted on AMO are signed now. Some third-party extensions may not be signed yet, but should be by the time signing is enforced.
That means you only have cause for concern if you're using abandoned extensions not hosted on AMO, or versions you've modified. In that case, you can submit them to be signed, without having them listed on the site.

How anyone is to go about this (submission process) for abandoned extensions is what I would like to know.

Is there a way to directly DOWNLOAD and INSTALL the extension if I do not already have it?

You shouldn't need one.

It is part of the installation process of avast, you can use control panel > add remove programs/programs and features > avast antivirus > Change - from the window that opens the Tools section has the option to add or remove elements of avast. The one you are looking for is the Browser Protection function, checking that option should have the add-on included for installed browsers.

As you are running a beta, this is definitely subject to change.  It may well be allowed in the next FF41 beta and will be allowed in Firefox release 41 and 42.

Thanks, but the Avast Online Security extension in the Firefox Add-ons Manager is annoyingly highlighted and tagged with a message: "Avast Online Security could not be verified for use in Firefox".  It works fine though, with Google and Bing but not Yahoo.

I have the latest version of Firefox, just updated it for Windows 10.  Avast needs to sign the extension ASAP.
