Hi all,
New beta version is released: AVAST 2015 R4 Beta 2 (build number 2015.10.4.2228) and AVAST 2015 R4 Beta 3 (build number 2015.10.4.2229).
Today we unusually released 2 beta versions in order to test a new mechanism that will allow to avoid some compatibility issues in the future. For this beta testing we set the rule that machines with Windows XP will be able to update only to version 2228, all other machines will update as usual to the latest version 2229.
So please test if you machines on XP are on version 2228 and Vista+ on 2229 and both reporting as latest version. Don't worry we will remove the limitation for Windows XP machines in the next beta version, and we also won't limit XP users in the future. This is just for testing purposes.
How to install:
1. If you have installed some beta version before you can update it to this latest version via Settings->Update->Program.
2. Or you can download and install from here:
http://files.avast.com/beta9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe

How to provide feedback
Please for specific issues set a new topic in the Beta section (https://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=15.0). For general open discussion feel free to use this thread.
Avast cleaner:

It should be possible to install this version on top of your existing avast! installation (all settings should be preserved).
To report BSODs, crashes or any other none trivial problems please use new SupportPackage generating tool.

We are looking forward for your feedback!
Thank you

Good timing, I had just updated to 10.4.2228 and rebooted, now to get started again ;)
-
We are looking forward for your feedback!
Not to worry you will get plenty of it!
-
Avast is keeping us busy today ::)
EDIT : I just rebooted, and indeed 2228 is updated to 2229 now.

Well just read the comment about XP only being on 2228, yet after the reboot for that update the avast UI > Update showed 2229 was available.
It installed and requested a reboot, so I'm just about to reboot, fingers crossed.
EDIT: well the update appears to have completed successfully and has been rebooted. This appears to have stuck so the XP install test for this beta build appears to have failed.
Image 2 and image 3.
EDIT: 2 now I'm getting the Your Avast antivirus is outdated popup. I guess it is now going to correct its error in installing 2229. Just about to find out, but if this is the way the check for XP is meant to work that is ridiculous (but I suspect not).
EDIT: 3 Well that is what it is doing downgrading to 2228 (image 4), I hope this isn't the way it was meant to work as this is pretty damn poor, install first reboot and have to downgrade and boot again.
-
Well have to start another post only 4 images allowed.
Well this XP check update it a screw up, having rebooted three times already and about ready to consider a forth, because of image 3 in my previous post above. I click manual program update only to get told that I have the latest avast version, 10.4.2229.
So how are you going to get past that little hiccup ?
-
Updated from '2227' to '2229'! No issues, but SU doesn't show 'ignored updates' anymore!
-
@David
It seems that the XP check screwed it up with you.
What happens if you download the full installer, and install it over the current installation ?
Greetz, Red.
-
Since I have no XP-box anymore, my "highly sophisticated piece of equipment" reported only version .2229 for update.
So I updated from avast UI, rebooted and enjoyed.
No flaws so far! 8)

Well I would rather wait to see what happens with a build not meant for XP and mainly how avast plan to resolve it as I may not be the only one effected.
-
So please test if you machines on XP are on version 2228 and Vista+ on 2229 and both reporting as latest version.
Updated via GUI and am on build 2228 now.
Did try a manual program update (which is still buggy, btw) but 2229 wasn't offered to me.

I guess you were lucky - not only was it offered in XP Pro SP3, it installed - after the reboot it then offered 2228, which failed as it reports I already have the latest version.
Interestingly I am now experiencing another issue with this build, problems loading images. Where I noticed this most is in https://uk.yahoo.com, no amount of refreshing resolved it. The only to get past it appears to be disabling HTTPS scanning in the web shield.
It would be nice to know what is in 2229, which shouldn't be in XP installations.

Yes, I understand that.
But I was curious if the full installer would get you past the " hiccup " screen.
That said :
Asyn had no problem when updating on Win XP, but at that time both 2228 and 2229 updates were available.
And when you first updated your Win XP, only 2228 was available.
That is a difference ( and a wild guess from me why it maybe went wrong for you ).

Thanks so much Avast! Team for working out the bugs of x.2225. I had to revert to x.2218 because of many problems that tech support thru my ticket and the forum could not fix. When the new version is ready (comes out of beta) where will I find it? Will I need to first update to x.2225 and then to the latest?

Hi DavidR,
its really strange you got on WinXP on build 2229. This should never happen. Please can you send us support package or log files from Persisten Data directory?
Expected behavior is:
- full installer 2229 on WinXP - fails with error
- online installer 2229 on WinXP - installs 2228 version
- all updates on WinXP should be stopped by version 2228
About the issues with https scanning. There were no big changes on XP https scanning, I will check more.
-
Just want to know only 1 thing---
The ads/popups are still there or not?
-
I'm on Windows 10 Insider Preview 10532. Avast updated to 10.4.2228, not 10.4.2229. I haven't restarted yet, but I am currently getting a notification to upgrade to version v10.2.2218!

I really want a more friendly approach in these matters. But I have a bad filling that the nagging won't be solved for free users in near futures. Still game/silent mode is the way of avoiding the nag. :-\

It's not just XP and/or beta issue, people were having similar issue with earlier versions too: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=174202.0

I have now uninstalled 10.4.2229 and reinstalled avast 10.3.2225.
Points of note: I couldn't do a clean reinstall as the avastclear.exe threw up an error, not compatible for this system (or words to that effect) or the file is corrupt (yet it passes a CRC check). I guess that this was a new version to cater for 10.4.2227 and later beta builds.
So I decided just to install 10.4.2227 and then update to 2228 - but I got the same error as I did with avastclear.exe. Ended up installing 10.3.2225 and started getting issues with images in yahoo.com again.
I Disabled HTTPS scanning, stopped and started the web shield, opened yahoo and whilst the images now appeared, but despite https was disabled avast was scanning them.
There are now a large amount of topics/posts relating to this non display of images and =this issues isn't limited to XP as was first thought - see https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=176073.0 (https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=176073.0) as just one example.

Why doesn't the full installer have the same behavior as the online installer ?
Should be logical :)

Hi beegolden :)
When the new version is ready (comes out of beta) where will I find it?
New stable releases will always been posted by Avast as a sticky here https://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2.0
Will I need to first update to x.2225 and then to the latest?
No, you can always update to the latest version.
But you can also download the full installer, and install it over your current installation.
Or do a clean install.

Hi,
what's new in this version?
Thanks
-
Hi Mr.Sunny :)
Nothing really new in R4, it is just fixing bugs.
But with this release R4 Beta 3, Avast is also testing a new selective update mechanism.

Hi, Rednose,
Will update user manuals?
Thanks

Hi Mr.Sunny :)
I don't use the manuals that much ...
But if you have suggestions, I can put them forward :)

I am getting errors today when AIS tries to update

It updated to 10.4.2231. I would like a download link if possible.
-
Check here:
https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=176324.0
The download links are always the same, just sometimes it needs couple of minutes when the cache is refreshed on the servers. So it might happen that you can update via program, but the download links still contain old version.
