Title: error 0000A474
Post by: crofty59 on November 27, 2005, 01:15:06 AM
Hello

I am using windowsXP with SP2
Avast program 4.6.731
VPS 0547-5

Every web page I go to I keep getting error 0000A474, in Avast log viewer and windows event viewer
I have used the search function and tried what was stated in the other posts with this problem didn't work.

I think this only started after I upgraded to the latest version of Avast. Not 100% sure.

Windows Event Viewer
AAVM-Scanning errorx:_AavmCheckFileDirectx AvfilesScanReal of http//update microsoft com/microsoftupdate/v61 footer.aspx? In=en-us failed,0000A474

AAVM-Scanning errorx:_AavmCheckFileDirectx AvfilesScanReal of www.dozleng.com/updates/calendar. htm& code= shower event & id=19980 failed,0000A474

I would like to know if my system is still being completely protected by Avast, and thanks for any help.

cheers

I hope this is only verbose of the logs and you're safe... because I have the same events here... lots of them...
Are they ok? Can anybody from Alwil say something?

Hi again

I am getting concerned as I am still getting error 0000A474 with every web page I visit.

I tried what was said in this link but to no avail and some of the comments in it is worrying.
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=14934.0

Can anyone from Alwil please let me know if I have a major problem or am I just being a pain  and have nothing to worry about.

Sorry for re-asking the  question
Cheers and thanks in advance of to do a on-line scan.

Does the problem happen even if you restart the machine?

Does the problem happen even if you restart the machine?

Hi Vlk

Yes it does I have rebooted several times.

By the way I have just finished doing virus on-line scan (Kaspersky) and everything came up clean.

So i would assume Avast is still protecting me.

Could you please ZIP up the whole avast folder and upload it to ftp://cat.asw.cz/incoming ??
I'd like to try to simulate the problem on our machine...

Thanks

Do you mean the Avast folder in programs only.
I have zipped the folder it is just over 20mb, to upload this is going to take a long time as i am on dial up.
My ignorance is showing now , I can zip it but not sure how to upload it :-[

Yes, I mean the C:\Program Files\ALWIL Software\Avast4 folder.
To "upload" it, simply click the link above, and copy'n'paste the ZIP file to the opened "folder" (or drag'n'drop, if you prefer) :)

Name the file something like avast-crofty59.zip. Also please note that you don't have READ access to the FTP server - just write - meaning that you'll be able to upload the file, but won't see it there after the upload process completes.  :)

crofty59 & Tech,

did these events begin to appear in your logs recently?

For the record I am not seeing any such events (either before or with the new release of avast).

Thanks crofty59, the sooner you upload it the sooner we will be able to look at it and eventually come up with a solution.

Thanks

Yeah, it's coming. What is the size of the file? Sounds sort of long time, even for a dial-up.

Thanks

Hmm, I don't seem able to simulate the problem.

So, if you simply start the avast main interface and start scanning e.g. your C:\ drive, does it report all files as unable to scan with the error code A474? Or is it just the WebShield?

I think I may have found the reason for these messages.  Upon what services does Avast depend?  I had been following a tweak guide and had disabled a number of services, including Com+.  I started getting DCOM related errors in the system event log so set the COM+ back to how it was before.  Since then Avast seems to have stopped generating the a474 errors.

Sorry I can't be more specific but for some bizarre reason I hadn't made a note of the services I amended (I should be shot at dawn).

Upon what services does Avast depend?

avast! Antivirus depends upon avast! Standard Shield Support and Remote Procedure Call - RPC.
avast! iAVS4 Control Service has no dependencies.
avast! Mail Scanner and avast! Web Scanner depend only upon avast! Antivirus service.

RPC depends on no one but almost everyone depends upon it.

Right, RPC and RPC locator were 2 that I disabled.  When I started seeing errors I reset RPC to automatic and that seems to have cured it.  It may not be the same problem but it's worth trying.

I'm very surprised you've killed RPC... I think you'll kill Windows doing so... It's a must have service.
Anyway, who knows. RPC Locator could be, indeed, stopped.

Strange as I was following guidelines for tweaking the services. Oh well, that's what I get for trying to optimise.  :)

I hope this answer resolves crofty59's problem too.

HI Vlk
I did a quick scan on drive c no errors
I only get this error on web shield.

Hi digicammad

When you change these settings do you have to reboot
I disabled RPC locator no difference.
Not game to disable Remote Procedure Call . Quick question how do you disable it ?
As this doesn't show up the same like RPC locator.

When it comes to computers i am not the sharpest tool in the shed!!!

It is controlled via the services control panel.  If you right click and choose properties you can then set it to auto, manual or disabled.

Hi Ian
I am to nervous to change it just in-case it kills windows on me.
Thanks anyway

Hi Vlk

Thanks for for your advice about disabling the RPC service.
I was very nervous any way, you have just made my mind up to leave it alone.

By the way Avast seems to be working fine except for the error i keep getting, should I be concerned about it or just clear the logs every so often.
As I get the error in the logs concerning web shield only.

Cheers peter

Sorry Peter I wasn't telling you to change the RPC service, I was telling you to check that it wasn't disabled  :).  I had mistakenly disabled mine and it seems to have been the cause of my A474 errors, so it is worth checking that your services are all okay.

Take a look in the event logs to see if you are getting any other errors which could point to a problem on your machine affecting Avast.

crofty59, I have some very good news. I managed to simulate the problem on one of our test machines (thanks to the ZIP file you sent to us).

This means that we can now play with it here - and analyse what's really going on.

Thanks for your help so far, I'll get you updated.

Huh, seems I spoke too soon! Sorry!
(I was assuming the problem got simulated here because I saw the entries in the Error.log and Warning.log files - but these were in fact from YOUR machine :)) ;D

Never mind.

Anyway, your log files only indicate the problem on Nov 28th (yesterday) between 3:45pm and 9:02pm. So, I'm wondering... have you purged the logs? Or how come the first entry is from the 28th when you in fact started this thread on the 27th...

Also, is it possible that the problem started happening with the latest virus database? (released on Nov 26th).

Thanks
Vlk

Yes I purged the logs sorry.

Yes it is quite possible it started from the last virus database? (released on Nov 26th), as I only noticed them on the nov 27th.
As i did a scan with a2square malware and they leave errors etc in the logs. I normally check a few just to make sure and that is when I noticed error 0000A474 .

Did you only purge the avast log files or the Windows Event Log as well?
Because avast writes them to both these locations so it might be possible to look it up in the Windows Event Log.

Also, do you use the avast mail scanner?

Sorry I purged Windows Event Log as well

I have just checked Windows Event Log and the only reference to avast i can find is in Antivirus in Windows Event Log

I use the avast mail scanner rarely. But I havn't used it for at least a month.

I am going to have to go soon got to get up early

Hi

I decided to do a repair of Avast again and for some reason, which I haven't got a clue but now I am not getting the error 0000A474 anymore.

My logs are clear in Avast logviewer and Windows event viewer.

I did avast repair  before I started this thread didn't work then !!!

I will keep an eye on it and if it comes back I will let you know by posting in this thread.

Crofty, avast does not react good with downgrades from Pro to Home version... Sometimes, troubles appear.
Won't just uninstalling and installing again solve the trouble?
